FIFA World Cup qualification

The FIFA World Cup qualification is the process that a national association football team goes through to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Finals. The FIFA World Cup is a global event, so qualification is required to reduce the large field of participants from about 200 to 32.

Qualifying tournaments are held within the six FIFA continental zones (Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean, South America, Oceania, Europe), and are organized by their respective confederations. For each tournament, FIFA decides beforehand the number of spots awarded to each of the continental zones, based on the numbers and/or relative strength of the confederations' teams. (wikipedia)

FOOTBALL TRIVIA

Goals for Galilee: The Triumphs and Traumas of the Sons of Sakhnin, Israel’s Arab Football Club
by Jerrold Kessel and Pierre Klochdendler

[...Kessel and his cameraman made a documentary film], We Have No Other Land, about the soccer team of Sakhnin, an Arab town in Galilee. It has a Jewish manager and several Jewish players, but is an Arab team. Against all odds it captured Israel’s State Cup, and represented Israel in Europe. It’s a true story of football conquering prejudice in one of the most suspicious lands on earth.

***

The message is that Arab and Jew are so close to each other, the border is so thin, that they’re really the same people. It’s really like having two different tribes of the same person, forever warring. For the club, there are two successes really.

One is that the club survives, because its field has been bombed just about every time that Israel bombs across the border. But, forgetting the material side, the second success is a spiritual thing – the club has a Jewish coach, it has Jewish players, but mostly it’s an Arab team.

To me, the biggest shock with this whole story is that they were allowed to compete and win the Israel State Cup. Israel allowed an Arab team to compete in their cup, and then win it, and then, having won it, they had the right and took it to compete in Europe as an Israeli team. And that’s very powerful. My feeling is that soccer is a lingua franca, it can cross all the boundaries.

World Cup's soccer ball the most high-tech yet

Danielle Elliot, CBS NEWS
June 14, 2014

(CBS NEWS) -- Every four years, FIFA introduces a new official World Cup ball. A ton of science goes into the process -- and whether the players like it comes down to physics.

Designed by Adidas, the ball itself is not meant to make headlines. But over the last two Cups, that's exactly what's happened. In 2010, Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano described that World Cup's ball - the Jabulani - as "supernatural." Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said, "It's trajectory is unpredictable."

The reason that balls seemed so erratic is that it was "knuckling" at different speeds than expected. Knuckling is when the ball wobbles in the air, following an unpredictable flight path. It's a tool for strikers, a menace for goalkeepers.

Adidas' "Brazuca" ball features six propeller-shaped polyurethane patches that are thermally-bonded together.(Photo: NASA Ames Research Center)

Traditionally, a typical soccer ball knuckles at about 30 miles per hour. This is slower than average kicking speeds, so it requires a bit of skill for the strikers to kick at precisely the right speed. But in 2006, it was knuckling at about 50mph, a speed more typical at the World Cup level. That meant the ball was knuckling much more often. In 2010, the speed for knuckling was even higher.

Leading into the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Adidas addressed these issues with the new "Brazuca" ball. The 12th official World Cup ball designed by the company, it features six propeller-shaped polyurethane patches that are thermally-bonded together.

The 2010 Jabulani ball had eight panels. The 2006 ball had 14. Before that, the balls were made of 32 internally-stitched panels. By decreasing the number of panels, they decreased the seams, creating a smoother surface. This smoother surface allows it to travel at higher speeds before it started knuckling.

"The surface characteristics - the seams, seam length, how the seams shape the surface of the ball -- have a lot to do with how active the ball will be," Dr. Kim Blair told CBS News in a phone interview. Blair is a material scientist with Cooper Perkins in Boston. He was not involved in designing the Brazuca.

Researchers at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research at Sheffield Hallam University measured the seams of the Jabulani and the Brazuca, determining that the Jabulani's seams are about .48 mm deep compared to 1.56 mm for the Brazuca. The seams on the Brazuca stretch to 327 cm, compared to 203 cm on the Jabulani.

The ball went through a range of scientific tests to assure that it would complement the players' skills on the field, rather than adding a skill set all its own. "We do extensive flight path analysis and the results have shown constant and predictable paths, with deviations hardly recognizable," Matthias Mecking told the BBC. Mecking is Adidas's football director.

"We've come full circle," says NASA Ames Research Center scientists Ravi Mehta. "It's back to knuckling at about 30mph." He was not involved in the design but has tested the ball. Another important factor, he says, is the amount of friction between the ball and the player's boot.

The smoother 2006 and 2010 balls decreased this friction, making it harder for players to put spin on the ball. They had aerodynamic grooves and small ridges, but these were "not effective," says Mehta. The latest version, with its deeper and longer seams, fixes this issue. There are also small dimples on the surface to help decrease drag. These work in the same way as the dimples on a golf ball -- by disrupting airflow, they allow it to travel faster.

Evolution of previous FIFA world cup match balls

No matter how often the ball is changed, Blair pointed out, it will never keep every player happy. He recalls players complaining that the ball was "too light" in 2010. "It couldn't be," he said, because FIFA strictly regulates nearly every aspect of ball design, including weight. "The one thing that FIFA does not test for is aerodynamic performance," he said.

In the end, as with all elements of a game, it comes down to how the players adjust.

"All the players are playing with the same ball. They all get introduced to the ball at the same time," he said. "Some will be able to adapt their style quicker, some will evolve faster than others do."

It’s all over, 4-0 to Germany.

That’s their biggest ever win over Portugal – very disappointing from Ronaldo & Co. Pepe will need to have a long, hard look in the mirror.

by Marcus Walker

The best possible opening for Germany’s World Cup. The worst possible start to Portugal’s.

Germany looked balanced, flexible, able to play slow or fast, and lethal when Müller finds space near goal. The only problem might be the injury to central defender Hummels.

Portugal has a deep hole to climb out of. It has to win its next match, against the U.S. on June 22, or it’s all over for Ronaldo & Co.

Later today we’ll see whether the U.S. or Ghana have the quality to stop Germany from winning this group. How good is this German team? We might not find out until the knockout stages.

Germany has reached at least the quarter-finals in every World Cup since 1938. It’ll be no surprise if it goes further than that this time.

World Cup 2014: Brazil fail to find a way past marvellous Mexico

David Hytner at Estadio Castelão
The Guardian, Tuesday 17 June 2014

Brazil's forward Neymar, right, goes on the rampage against Mexico. Photograph: Vanderlei Almeida/AFP/Getty Images

There has been plenty of talk of footballing ghosts here for Brazil and the scariest one for them is generally considered to be Uruguay, what with 1950 and all that. But Mexico have also put a few skeletons in the closet of the World Cup hosts and they once again proved irksome.

No team have fared better against Brazil over the last 15 years than El Tri and they entered this collision with seven wins and four losses in 13 meetings. That did not include the victory in the final of the 2012 Olympic Games, ostensibly an under-23 game but arguably the hardest one of all for Brazil to stomach.

what is a mexican wave?

The wave (known as the Mexican wave in the anglosphere outside North America) is an example of metachronal rhythm achieved in a packed stadium when successive groups of spectators briefly stand, yell, and raise their arms. Immediately upon stretching to full height, the spectator returns to the usual seated position. (wikipedia)

Australia 2-3 Netherlands match report: Depay winner seals Dutch comeback over spirited Australia

Jun 18, 2014 19:07
By Bruce Archer

Tim Cahill's wonderstrike was not enough for the Socceroos as Louis van Gaal's men won a see-saw game in Porto Alegre

Arjen Robben of the Netherlands shoots and scores his team's first goal past goalkeeper Mathew Ryan of Australia

Holland followed up their huge win over Spain with a more modest, but just as thrilling, victory over Australia to take full control of Group B.

The Dutch move onto six points and are just about guaranteed a place in the last 16 after goals from Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and the winner from Memphis Depay.

lining up before the match

Tim Cahill struck for a second game running with an incredible - Marco van Basten-esque - volley to level after Robben's opener and Australia then took the lead briefly through Mile Jedinak's 54th minute penalty.

an Australian fan

But van Persie followed up his brace against Spain with another effort, before Depay finished the match with 22 minutes to go, scoring from a 20-yard effort which keeper Mathew Ryan should have done better with.

Australia, without a point, are just about out and will miss Cahill for their final match with Spain having picked up his second booking of the tournament - Van Persie will also miss the final round of group games having done the same.

Adios España: Chile knock holders off their perch

Miguel Delaney
Wednesday 18 June 2014

Iker Casillas looks on in despair

Too tired, too slow and too few points. Spain’s World Cup is over, and an era ends. Vicente Del Bosque’s team have become only the fifth defending champions in history to go out in the group stage, but the first the lose their opening two games and thereby the quickest to ever go home.

They are also the first team eliminated from the 2014 tournament. That sums up the scale of the fall almost as much as the poverty of their play. Chile, as they promised before the game, have made history.

The South Americans also consigned Spanish dominance to the past with a display that brilliantly outpaced their famous philosophy and made it look brutally outdated.

The 2010 World Cup winners joined the exclusive club of teams who have won the World Cup and gone out at the next in the group stage after their 2-0 defeat to Chile

World champions Spain are out of the 2014 World Cup following their 2-0 defeat to Chile, with goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz sending home Vicente Del Bosque's side. But they are certainly not the first reigning champions to leave the competition early.

After their historic 1-0 win over the Netherlands four years ago in South Africa, La Roja experienced humiliation of the highest level after shock defeats to the Netherlands and Chile.

Many have commented that it is the end of 'tiki-taka' as we know it, but Spain are certainly not the first and won't be the last to relinquish their crown at the first attempt of defending it.

In fact, Spain join two other nations in the 21st Century who have crashed out at the group stage the tournament after winning the World Cup - France in 2002 and Italy in 2010.

But Spain are the only champions to have lost their first two games the tournament after winning it.

Here are the other nations who went from the highest of highs to humiliation within two tournaments.

Italy (1950)

The Italians won the 1938 World Cup but, due to World War II, were unable to defend their crown until 12 years later. And even then, they were severely weakened by the fact that some members of their squad were killed in the Superga air disaster the year before the tournament started. They were put in a group with Paraguay, Sweden and India (who later withdrew), and lost their opening game 3-2 to Sweden, who went through.

Brazil (1966)

Even with the likes of Pele and Tostao in the side, Brazil could not live up to the expectations of them and subsequently failed to make it past the group stages in the 1966 World Cup. Their group, containing Hungary, Portugal and Bulgaria, was one filled with goals, and Brazil's 3-1 defeat to Portugal condemned them to failure in England, who went on to win their first and only World Cup.

France (2002)

A shock 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan showed a sign of things to come for France. After their incredible 3-0 win over Brazil in 1998, the weight of expectation proved to be too much for the reigning champions. They ended the tournament winless after being defeated by Denmark and a goalless draw with Uruguay which saw Thierry Henry infamously sent off.

Italy (2010)

A group that Italy were more than capable of getting out of turned into their worst nightmare as Marcelo Lippi's side were eliminated from the World Cup. Their opponents - Paraguay, Slovakia and debutants New Zealand - surprised the Azzurri, with the latter side picking up a 1-1 draw. A 3-2 defeat to Slovakia compounded Italy's exit, although France's equal level of underachievement meant that Italy's poor showing went somewhat under the radar.

Spanish Press Reacts To Elimination, 2-0 Loss To Chile: 'Unbelievable Ridicule'

This week ought to be a time of celebration for Spain. King Felipe VI is being crowned Thursday, after the official abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos I, on Wednesday. But instead, the country will be thinking about something else that happened on Wednesday -- something that will also go down in the history books, but for a far less joyous reason: Spain’s early elimination from the World Cup after a 2-0 loss to Chile.

It’s only the fourth time in the soccer World Cup’s 84-year history that a defending champion goes home unceremoniously after an elimination in the first round. And Spain had gone to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup as a favorite, widely thought to be in a good position to defend the 2010 title it won in South Africa. On Wednesday, Spain should have been celebrating a victory against the far less vaunted Chilean team.

Instead, the Spaniards are out of the cup. Not even a lopsided victory next week in their third and final match, against Australia, would net them enough points to advance to the round of 16. They are now dead last in their group of four. The Chileans, who had won their first match against Australia by 3-1 last week, are already sure of advancing --  as is the fourth team in the group, the Netherlands, which humiliated Spain 5-1 last week and then beat Australia 3-2.

The significance of such a humiliation -- seven goals to one scored in two matches, an enormity in soccer -- was not lost on the Spanish press, which reacted emotionally. The biggest sports daily in the nation, Marca, went with a simple one-word headline: Crashed! and put it over a picture of goalkeeper and team capitain Iker Casillas staring forlornly into space, while a teammate hides his face under his jersey. The story itself was just as harsh, accusing the outgoing champions of having shown the world “another unbelievable ridicule,” a merciless reference to the five-goal drubbing suffered from the Dutch.

“It’s a sad goodbye,” Marca said, adding  that the team of coach Vicente del Bosque had given “a very poor image.” The squad “screams for a generational change,” read the story -- and that was just the front page summary.

“That was good while it lasted, but everything ends in life,” Marca said of the national team’s cycle of domination (it won the 2012 European championship as well). And because you can’t have a World Cup without vaguely war-related metaphors, the newspaper noted the match had been “a national agony.”

The country’s newspaper of record, El País, was more composed in its reaction, simply saying in its main headline on the Web: “Spain out of the World Cup after falling to Chile.” But even the normally subdued País could not avoid words commensurate with the magnitude of the loss: It was “a calamitous effort,” “the nightmare of Brazil,” and, again, “the most complete ridicule.”

Casillas was quoted by the paper as saying, “I demand forgiveness from the people.” The paper’s sports writer in charge of live-blogging the match caught the spirit perfectly: “Sad night, but you have to get up and think of the future. Life goes on. A strong hug to everybody,” Rafael Pineda signed off.

El fútbol is that serious a deal, yes. And the new king of the Spaniards, knowing well who his subjects are, may very well mention in his coronation speech Thursday a sentiment similar to what Pineda wrote. Felipe VI, meeting the press on Wednesday, asked half-jokingly if the journalists had  any ideas for the speech -- and it’s hard to imagine that the new king’s advisors will not tell him to talk constructively about the defeat, and a future rebirth, as a metaphor that a nation coming out of a dire economic crisis could use as inspiration.

It’s tough to lose like this (and to not one but two formerly Spanish-dominated nations, by the way, though the king won’t say it), but life goes on.

World Cup 2014: Croatia Defeats Cameroon, 4-0

By IAN LOVETT

Croatia is still alive and Cameroon is out of the World Cup after a very one-sided encounter in Manaus.

Croatia took an early lead through Ivica Olic, but it remained a tight contest until Alex Song lost his cool and inexplicably lashed out at Mario Mandzukic late in the first half, punching him from behind as they ran up the field. Song was rightly shown a red card, leaving Cameroon down a goal and a man, and without any real hope.

In the second half, Cameroon simply imploded. Croatia scored three goals to make the final score 4-0, and it could easily have been twice that many as the Cameroonian defense fell apart. By the end of the game, one Cameroon player was head-butting another.

ImagesCroatia’s Ivan Perisic scored early in the second half.

Croatia will now face Mexico in its final match of the group, and they will likely need another win if they hope to advance. The Croatians will surely face stronger resistance than they did today. Still, they will take heart from Madzukic's return. He scored two goals today, and was a constant danger, especially on set pieces.

Ivan Perisic also starred for the Croats, setting up Olic for the first goal and scoring the second himself.

Scotland Fan Enjoys Uruguay Beating England at 2014 World Cup

By Mark Patterson, UK Staff Writer
Jun 19, 2014

England are on the brink of elimination from the World Cup after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Luis Suarez and Uruguay, so fans of the South American nation were naturally delighted.

So too was a Scotland fan, hidden in the crowd among the Uruguayans in Sao Paulo. You can spot him in the still shot above wearing a Scotland away shirt and flying the national flag.

Blink and you'd have missed him, but clearly he didn't miss any of England's frustrating defeat.

Feeling football fever, or perhaps not? My neurological guide to the World Cup

Dean Burnett

Watching football can cause a dizzying range of emotional experiences – and here's why

'Emotions are stronger when you're part of a group' … England football fans in Sao Paulo after their team lost to Uruguay. Photograph: Oli Scarff/Getty Images

Friday 20 June 2014 16.00 BST

The recent England games have been a rollercoaster of emotions for enthusiastic fans. There's the anticipation created by a long build-up, the split-second changes in the fortune of the teams during the games, the possibility of victory suddenly replaced by crushing defeat. All of this throws fans from one extreme to the other, leaving them drained and exhausted, much as though they were actually playing.

Why does this happen? What is it about football that causes such intense emotional reactions?

People like being part of a successful group

Human beings are very social creatures. We evolved as part of communities, and much of who we are and what we think is based on how others in our groups behave and act towards us.

People also want status: we feel better if the group we're part of is demonstrably better than other groups that we're not part of. One way in which people can both belong to a group and experience group success is by showing support for a football team. Anyone who identifies as part of the group known as "England supporters" is going to be invested in them succeeding no matter what their chances, or who plays where, and will react accordingly when the team succeeds or fails.

The exact neurological mechanisms behind this are tricky to pin down, but some studies implicate parts of the brain such as the cortical midline structures, temporo-parietal junction and the anterior temporal gyrus, all brain regions that can show increased activity when processing social stimuli. However, this is an incredibly nuanced and complex process, as well as being hard to study in the first place.

Emotions are stronger when you're part of a group

People prefer to watch major games like England World Cup matches as part of large groups; if they can't go and physically be present for the game in the venue, they'll congregate in pubs or each other's houses. While this may sound like just an excuse to hang out and drink, being part of an emotional group can have genuine psychological effects.

As mentioned, people are already emotionally invested in being part of the group and seeing their team succeed. But if you're surrounded by others who feel the same in an uncertain situation (eg watching a football match) this can make things far more intense.

People in highly aroused groups (eg angry mobs) undergo a process called "deindividuation", where the emotional state of the immediate group overrides our own judgment and thinking, making us more impulsive and less self-aware. That explains normally quite meek fans screaming horrible abuse at the TV in a crowded room.

When your team scores

So those watching the football are already in a state of high arousal. The body's biological control systems, not quite grasping what's going on, can flood the body with adrenaline, as part of the fight-or-flight response. We become flooded with the hormones and glucose necessary for quick action, and this needs to be expressed somehow.

This is why the anticipation of football can be so aggravating: fans are physically primed for action, but can't vent it. If a goal is scored, as well as the select dopamine release associated with anticipation and reward, there's the relief of finally being able to vent your excitement. This may be why celebration of a goal can seem so hysterical to the uninvolved observer.

When the other team scores

The same physiological mechanisms apply, but this time it's disappointment, not happiness. Disappointment has been associated with a brief decrease in dopamine activity. This then spreads through the "group mind", amplifying the grief. There's also the effect of cognitive dissonance: everyone in the room is emotionally invested in England being the best team, and their losing would undermine that. The human brain doesn't deal well with information that contradicts its previously held views, so this adds to the general anger and confusion.

Add the depressant effects of alcohol, and any loss can hit people pretty hard.

People who aren't interested

Much of the above can help explain why enthusiastic football fans end up behaving as they do, but if the effects are so fundamental, why isn't everyone caught up in it? The obvious answer is that people are different. Some people define themselves by the group they're part of (eg football fans, England supporters etc), others define themselves by actively rejecting such groups.

Some people don't grow up with any particular positive association with football, and thus lack the emotion or enthusiasm that makes people fans of the game. They may enjoy different sports, or their interests may lie elsewhere. Perhaps they have a passing interest in football, but the media saturation means they've become habituated to it (ie it's so constant and familiar that they've stopped responding to it).

Whatever the reasons, for those involved, watching football can cause a dizzying range of experiences. And that's meant literally, as adrenaline can lead to dizziness.

There's a remedy for this affliction of course: just don't watch the World Cup. But then this is one sickness that millions of fans don't seem to want to be without.

Bryan Ruiz's headed goal helps Costa Rica qualify from Group D and end England's chances of making next round

Costa Rica have deservedly beaten Italy thanks to a goal by Bryan Ruiz, a player deemed unworthy of the Premier League last season. Los Ticos stride into the last 16 while England head for the nearest airport and a flight home. Italy were out-fought and out-thought today and Costa Rica fully deserve their place in the last 16. They have made the so-called Group of Death seem a doddle: and now Italy face a do-or-die showdown with Uruguay, who, as you may be aware, of good recent experience of such clashes. Hats off to Costa Rica: in their two matches at this tournament, the happiest country on the planet has given joy to the rest of the world.

Bryan Ruiz drives Costa Rica past Italy – and England out of tournament

Costa Rica saved the Queen. But there was no saving England. The end of the World Cup dream has been confirmed. England needed Italy to win here in order to cling to the most slender of lifelines, yet the hope was snuffed out by Costa Rica, the tournament’s most romantic surprise. The only consolation was for Her Majesty. Mario Balotelli had demanded a kiss from her if Italy triumphed.

Costa Rica have qualified from the “group of death” that was supposed to eat them alive, and nobody can say that they do not deserve it. After last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Uruguay, they went toe to toe with the four-times world champions and they were the better team.

They shrugged off the harsh decision not to award them a 43rd-minute penalty for a barge by Giorgio Chiellini on Joel Campbell to strike the decisive blow through the captain Bryan Ruiz. The Fulham forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, can cherish one of the goals of his life.
