Taiwan Begins Military Drills Near Philippines

Taiwan's navy load Standard Type II surface-to-air missiles on the rear of a Kidd-class destroyer during exercises off of the southern city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, May 16, 2013.

VOA News
May 16, 2013

A diplomatic dispute between Taiwan and the Philippines intensified Thursday, as Taipei began a military exercise in the disputed waters between both countries.

The air and naval drills in the Bashi Channel come a week after the Philippines Coast Guard shot dead a 65-year-old Taiwanese fisherman, prompting outrage in Taiwan.

The family of the fisherman and Taiwanese officials have refused to meet the Philippine president's personal representative who was sent to Taiwan to apologize for the death.

Taiwan's premier Jiang Yi-huah rejected the apology of President Benigno Aquino because it referred to the shooting as "unfortunate" and "unintentional." Taiwan also rejected an earlier statement of regret by a lower-ranking official.

Taiwan has imposed sanctions on the Philippines, including recalling its envoy to Manila and freezing job permits for Philippines workers.

A State Department spokesman says the U.S. is concerned by increased tensions between two neighboring democracies and close American allies. It urges both to clarify disagreements and ensure maritime safety.

The Philippines Coast Guard said it was acting in self-defense in last Thursday's incident, because it said the fisherman's boat was about to ram the coast guard vessel. Taiwan has rejected those charges.

Taiwan and the Philippines, along with Brunei, China, Malaysia, and Vietnam all have competing claims to parts of the sea, which may be rich in oil and natural gas.

Lound sounds , nothing but loud sounds. In the end of the day, they can't do anything to the Philippines because it will annoy the United States, the benefactor of Taiwan's existence. Hundreds of their citizens were caught last year scamming people in the Philippines and deported. Their fishermen continually breach territorial waters of the Philippines to fish on waters within the Philippine's maritime domain as proscribed by UNCLOS' statute of Archipelagic Domain.

I cannot wait until the Philippine Navy receives the BRP Ramon Alcaraz this coming July 2013, so that the Philippine Navy can be deployed to the Bashi Channel and uphold the country's territorial integrity.

The newly acquired frigate, the BRP Ramon Alcaraz of the Philippine Navy.

BRP Ramon Alcaraz, the 2nd Gregorio Del Pilar Class Frigate of the Philippine Navy.

Imagine when the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and the BRP Ramon Alcaraz with support surface ships of the Philippine Northern Fleet will converge onto our country's northern maritime territorial domain. Those old Taiwanese ships will be within the targetting range of the frigates' CISW phalanx guards, and the Harpoon Missile Systems that will be added onto our frigates.

The Philippine Navy is also planning to purchase 2 more battle-ready frigates from Italy within the next 2 years.

Those Taiwanese won't dare start their saber rattling when the Philippine Fleet will be dispatched.... 8)

The Philippine Navy will be purchasing, also, 2 Maestrale Class Light Destroyers of the Italian Navy. These warships have anti-submarine capability, as well as modern surface to air and surface to surface battle ability. These two ships, combined with the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and the BRP Ramon Alcaraz will silence any futile attempts of the Taiwanese to dare threaten the Philippines again.

Na hala, usika ug maajo nang injong bala. Tagpila pud kaha na kada tira. Hehehehe

Their strategy is , truly, pathetic. For years they painted themselves as the victims of the mainland's (People's Republic of China) threats of military conquest. The Philippines was one of the countries that maintains diplomatic relationship with them (Taiwan) despite upholding the One-China Policy. And this is how they (Taiwan) treat our nation's kind hardheartedness and diplomatic posterity?

The Taiwanese may believe they have won because of our government's acquiescence to apologize over the shooting incident, however, I believe their over-exaggerated response will lead the world to view them not as victims, but as regional bullies. I fear Taiwan has a darker, cloudier future. Embarrassing and threatening one of your closest allies is not really a sign of your loyalty and reliability.

They use this incident as political and diplomatic blackmail. The audacity of these people. If they don't want our OFWs there or threaten then to hell with them! As if we depend on Taiwan that much. If they are willing to lose 87 thousand Filipino workers there over a miniscule shooting incident, which was the fault of the taiwanese for trying to ram our coast guard ship, then to hell with them! Audacious malevolent buffoons. There are 11 million OFWs, after all.

And when the People's Republic of China decides to invade them in the coming years, I hope they don't dare scream, "Dear Filipino Friends! Help! Send your soldiers to help defend us from the evil communists!"

Tsk!
