Dreaming of Bohol as Food Basket
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:40:50 PM »
Peace converts here get
Bohol “seeds of hope”

IT would be another “armed struggle” with former rebels now peace converts as Bohol Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera gave them seeds of hope to start anew.

The peace converts, or more popularly known in Bohol as “kauban sa reporma” (KR) belong to the latest batch of rebel returnees decided stopping their pursuit of a lost war.

The new “armed struggle” is essentially one that uses the KRs arms in tilling the soil and produce food from the sweat of their brow.

Still stigmatized as former extremists, the 26 returnees here found themselves hard up in finding livelihood opportunities much less, the capital to start a decent life anew.

Through the Office Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, the government, with the help of local officials here succeeded in granting P20T livelihood assistance.

Seeing that majority of these peace converts decide to be anonymous farmers, the vice governor, who heads the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s Agriculture committee found the perfect opportunity to recruit new allies.

The seeds, a complete Pinoy pinakbet pack consists of ampalaya, eggplant, squash, okra, string beans and tomatoes were each given to peace converts as starter seed set to germinate at home, Herrera said.

This may be a real small thing, but great beginnings start from here, Herrera said in the vernacular as he elaborated on the parallel effort growing the seeds of hope in the government’s honest peace initiatives.

In his engagements across the province, Herrera has been convincing people to go back to agriculture as a response to the global crisis that threatens to shake rock-steady economies across the globe.

He shared his dreams of keeping backyard gardens so that families can cut on spending costs.

Consequently, Herrera has been on the recruiting binge to convince people of the vision for food sufficient Bohol.

In support of his personal crusade, the province of Bohol has recently allotted P1M more to feed the Herrera dream of food security, shared Provincial Administrator Tomas Abapo during the awarding ceremonies last week.

Sir Fdaray, if you realize, ang ato lugar may not be having the best of soils, pero ever notice why da best ang camote sa cabilao ug panggangan, ang manga sa panglao ug ang salad greens sa bee farm?

What i am saying is this, production wise, way imposible. Kon nakapatubo si ms vicky wallace og romaine, there is no reason other than katapulan sa Bol-anon nga makaproduce.

Pughad kaajo ug lami. Tungod kay walay dagko nga farm nga katamnan sa kamote, dili mo makaproduce in tons aron mahimo nga basket sa kamote production. Ang kamote seasonal crops from May to December. Wala nay kamote from Jan to April kay init na.

Diri sa Davao ug Cotabato, all year round ang production sa kamote by tons for export.

Dreaming of Bohol as Food basket is  a "dream."

Kon tourism ang hisgotan, mutoo ko nga Bohol is number 1.

aw, there's nothing wrong with dreaming. it will determine how much effort we exert to achieve high. our problem really is not dreaming much.

if we dream more, we can achieve more. it's our dream that determines our destiny because people's determination is anchored in their dreams.

are we going anywhere if we don't dream or dream less?

libre man mangandoy. wa pa  jud tax. just don't count the chicks before the eggs hatch. pero kung nakaincubator na, pwede na iphon. in finance and economics, they call that projecting/budgeting/ forecasting.

the title of the thread is misleading. it does not reflect what is written in the article.

in the last part of the write-up, it mentions only of food security and sufficiency. it does not mention about being a food basket.

mao bitaw ilang gilimbasugan karon nga ang Bohol himoong "Rice Granary of Central Visayas" maong nagtayo sila og mga dams karon like in Pilar, Ubay og Inabanga man cguro to. pero sad to say naay mga controbersiya nagpaluyo sa paggama og dam.

"Dreaming of Bohol as Food Basket"

exactly what it is -- just a dream. while it is true that almost anything can be done if there is a will to do it, the absence of an economic development plan let alone an integrated development plan for bohol bespeaks of the real attitude current boholano leaders have about this issue. sure, a few souls might be able to grow some veggies here and there, it will certainly be a far cry from being a food basket... this is not cynicism, just pure and simple realism.

quote from hofelina: "I love to read your postings Bolingitoy, do  have some suggestions to make this dream come true?"

the VMG (vision, mission, goals) statement of the provincial government of bohol intends to focus in making the province a leading eco-cultural tourism destination with a strong agriculture base. i think it is going the right direction in terms of tourism development but the agricultural development aspects leaves much to be desired. i think the main reason why this is so is that the provincial government does not even have a specific action plan on how to realize these visions. timing lang (read:swerte) ang tourism gains experienced by bohol because it is designated as one of the 8 anchor destinations in the country that are fully supported by the department of tourism. kung dili pa apil and bohol sa 8 anchor destinations, manimaho untang anhoy ang turismo sa bohol... and this explains why agricultural development has not moved an inch in bohol. on the national level, there is no clear cut policy kung unsa gyud ang klarong focus. on the provincial level, labaw nang wa... bohol has potential in becoming a food basket but unless there is an integrated agricultural development plan that will be developed in order to set a specific direction that development will take, bohol will continue to be dependent on food grown from other places and remain a backward agricultural economy.

i beg to disagree.

i suggest that boholano leaders continue to create the highest, grandest vision possible for our province and the boholanos because we become what we believe.

Bolingits, Calle, mag himo ta ug bag-ong thread and we will make some sort of brainstroming on how to move our provincial government on this issue.  Food prices are high in Tagbi, isada, gulay kay ang mga hotels ug resorts sila ang priority sa pagbaligya.
I see to it that I buy in wet market, kay mao kini sila ang groupo nga nawani, kay kon buot huna-hunaon ang mga gagmay nga mamomoyo wala maka-amgo sa turismo sa Bohol.

Have you heared of Phil Carabao Center in Ubay? This is a very good example of a government agency geared for food production and food sufficiency in our province.
