You have a point. This is a problem with some physicians nowadays in that they acquiesce to patient's requests for drug treatment via anti-psychotics, neuroleptics, anti-convulsants etc because the physician fears that the patient will leave his care for another.
It is unfortunate that there are some Doctors that prescribe drugs because: 1) they get profits, 2) maintain the patient base.
Do note that not all physicians are like this. But there are some.
And there are patients that go from doctor to doctor to get the drugs; because many of these anti-psychotic drugs (Lithium salts, carbamamezapines, etc) are extremely addictive. Plus they have extrapyramidal adverse effects. So they go to a doctor to get their drug medication; and when the physician catches up to their tactics, the patient will change physicians etc etc.
Not all of Medicine is Drug Therapy.
As medical students, we are taught to maintain a pluralistic point of view in medical care. The importance of drug therapy to relieve enzymatic and symptomatic clinical symptoms, but then again we are also taught and undestand the supporative care provided via psychoanalysis and psychologic examination/analysis.
Talking and listening works wonders. hehehehe.
One cannot fully put the blame on the physician for this phenemenon. We have to put the blame on the medical insurance companies that are putting this system in effect. In my personal point of view, everyone, EVERYONE--every American Citizen from child to elderly, from poor to rich should have basic medical care provisions. Everyone. No Ifs ands or Buts.
But that is just my point of view.
Because the way the medical health insurance work the system, physicians right now do not even get paid enough. Say we have a patient come to a physician, for a regular physical exam, a patient's health insurance will cover most of the cost. An average check-up cost will range from $200-$300 per patient. So, naturally, a physician will probably see anywhere from 30-50 pts a day (even more). We can do the math on how much he/she will make in one day. But that doesn't work that way. hehehe
The way health insurance work it, the physician only sees 30-40% of the health insurance coverance payment. So as a result, the physicians have to maintain a healthy patient base in order to maintain the practice and cover over-head cost.
Doctors have to pay the salaries of the receptionists, the nurses, the PAs, the janitors, the montly rent for the office, and of course the Medical Insurance Plan for a physician---which ranges from $100,000-200,000 a year!! YES! A YEAR!
Most of these family practice physicians,psychiatrists,GIs, etc are struggling just to make the day's meat. And bring home the bread and butter.
One understands the two sides of the picture.
The system in place is just, IMHO, really 'WHACKED'
