The Road Not Taken
« on: June 14, 2007, 04:25:32 PM »
Once and for all, I will behave here at Tubag Bohol. Here's a piece of modern American poetry by Robert Frost that will forever hold a spot in my heart. Ask me, most of the time, I choose the Road Less Traveled By

The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Did I promise? No, I didn't, not in my sanity. To behave is not me. So let me just be me. This poetry, I can always give it a wild turn. Prod me and I'll start the ball rolling.

This takes me back to HSS, circa 1998.

Mike, it's a pity I couldn't fully describe the teachers I had. Yes, I've rough edges, but if you had the mentors I had and learned the things I did, you wouldn't be able to help being rough, too. You'd be outspoken and unafraid. You'd be equal parts scathing and kind. You'd be fun to talk to because you've no use for the trite or the commonplace. You won't always be polite, too, because politeness can often keep you from saying the things you want or need to blurt out. Civility and the need to keep up appearances, you see, can sometimes be why people spend their lives wasting away.

So yeah, I'm rough because all my life, I've moved, interacted, talked, and thought with people who are as rough as they are brilliant. To people used to the smoothness of the conventional and the typical, roughness would be appalling. I find it appealing, however, because I know how hard it is to find.

If Rose enjoys taking the road less traveled, so do I. To some extent (to a one-school-year extent), she is partly responsible for molding me into the person I have become. For that, Rose, I'm grateful.

Disclaimer: Yech! I bet I'd want to delete this an hour after. Hahaha
I don't want to live forever. I just want to go through life smartly dressed.

Let me rephrase the question.

Chin, are you also good at immortalizing our tears? How to do that?

I'm partly guilty when I found out that after graduation from high school, most of my students came running unto me with a huge hug and a soft whisper that says, "Ma'am, I just broke my hymen last night!" Gawd, what did I do to deserve this? I only described to them the difference between the classical and the medieval.

Oh, great to hear that. So could you kindly tell us what less traveled road have you gone to? I'll start so I won't shy you away. When I was young at twenty, I tempted a Religious Education teacher to bed me. He was a nun's property; everyone was well warned not to touch him. But the Rose dared. What can everyone else do? She loves to trudge the road less traveled by.

Did I say your road should be a sexual one? I was asking what that road was. I showed you mine. Oh men, who created the word misinterpretation?  ;D
