Today i was caring for a patient who was in end-stage renal failure. As i was rotating with the head of surgery, Dr. B, i was selected to perform a rectal exam on the patient. Observed occult blood on the stool sample and had to consult the patient to agree to a colonoscopy.

Another medical student asked me, "why do we really have to ask him to consent to a colonoscopy when he's already going through renal failure?"

Before i could even answer, Dr. B, answered, "because it's protocol!"

I pray that I never become as arrogant as Dr. B in the future. aish!

Grumpy and strict. Or in the proverbial Binisaya, "Bongkinot".

I notice that medical students are guilty of being and exemplifying this trait. I know that i demonstrate it sometimes.

One wonders if this sense of being is the reason that people generalize medics as being 'arrogant' and 'rude'. But they should also understand that the work and experience makes one this way.

They say that in the first couple of years, medics are ideological and believe that 'they can do anything'. Fellowship and post-residency years takes that away from medics, so they say. Really? Is that true?

My daily vent. Back to work.

Had a long day today. So I came back home today after visiting PAWS, an organization that helps to find parents to adopt animals. After my girlfriend and I visited , we both fell in love with a 5 month old German Shepherd. She's so beautiful. As I'm typing this down, she's sitting next to me by my feet and curled up in a ball sleeping. She's so precious and adorable! (she's snoring!!) :P

We've named her Maxine. Our little Maxine.

I'm so happy.

Today I joked around with babycakes. Since babycakes is half German, i always joke around with her how she's stricta like a Nazi. Bwahaha. It was so cute today when we were driving home with Maxine. I looked to my rear view mirror and I saw both of them. Our Maxine was sleeping and already cuddling.

She joked around, "Now you have two Germans...!" bwahahaha.

Truly, a puppy helps reduce stress and brings a huge smile to people's faces. She's 5 months old, but already 40+ pounds!

Outward and External stressors.

We tend to let external stressors affect us, and sometimes, it consumes our being and affects our health. This happens to all of us. This past week I talked to a good friend of mine, one whom I haven't talked to in a long while. A good friend from California.

As I called her, she answered the phone and introduced me to a friend of hers via 3-way phone call. A really good friend of hers; in all actuality, both of them are good friends to each other. Through thick or thin.

Anyways, to cut it to the main point, the friend that my Ate introduced me to is a cancer survivor. She had her breast tumor resected and is now undergoing chemotherapeutic regimen. All the while, she was telling me of her faith in God and in praying the rosary. The faith that she exhibited, truly, is a testament to living and healing faith. I was so very touched by talking to my ate on the phone and also being to meet her friend via 3-way phone call.

Her living testament tells me, and teaches me that faith and prayer strengthens us. When we are weak, we will be tempted, but it is in times of stress and dire need that our faith in God should be strengthened. He will provide, strengthen, and rescue-- always. Her experience in dealing with external stressors (the cancer) and fighting it not only through following medical regimen, but enlivening her spirituality and faith through sound prayer (and the prayer from friends).

God Bless these two women. These two women who taught me a valuable lesson (which i want to share with you all) in the importance of sticking up for each other, supporting a friend in need and in trouble. Additionally, they both taught me the power and beauty of Prayer.

Simple, Honest and Solemn Prayer.

Separation in the Hospital System/ Hospital Setting

I notice that in the cafeteria and even in the communal areas, there is a separation between professionals. I notice that nurses stay with nurses, doctors and medical interns with their own, respiratory technicians with other allied field technicians etc etc.

I wonder why?

Today during lunch, I decided to sit with some of the Filipina nurses and converse with them while eating. The nurses in the hospital wear red - colored scrubs while doctors and medical interns wear blue or green (surgery) scrubs and then white coats over. I guess because i wore a white coat and my green scrubs, the nurses saw me and stopped their conversation when I came to sit with them.

I decided to sit with my good friend Lulu, and Kuya Jon (a really good pinoy nurse whom i am friends with; the guy is from Bicol, but he speaks cebuano/bol-anon).

I asked them ngano nang quiet quiet man ang nursing staff when i was sitting with them. Dili kono normal nga mo lingkod ang mga doctors / medical iterns with the nursing staff sa cafeteria daw. doctors sit with doctors ra daw. It was kinda akward at first. But eventually the nurses started to talk to me afterwards.

I felt that I was an intruder, seriously, and i was happy to see that they opened up to me. Well at least the Pinoy/ Pinay nurses were conversationally active with me. :)

I don't believe in separation and sitting apart. I say all medical professionals should sit with each other. None of this superiority point of view. I mean, we're all in this health industry. We are a team.

Medical Brother and Medical Sister

My sister came to visit me in Chicago. We went to get Vietnamese Pho for dinner with old-time college friends.
Lorraine, my sister, is finishing her 2nd year of Medical School. She is going to go into Pediatrics. :)

My medical director is hardcore. If he gets any more hardcore, I fear he might hit the floor.  :-\

Dear Tubag Bohol Family,

With the duties of internship and clinical instructorship on the side, there is very little time I can commit these days. Due to the weight of work, I will be taking a little break from Tubag Bohol for the mean time. I will come back from time to time to read the little funny queries here and there.

Keep smiling and keep praying everyone. To everyone here, I'm wishing you all have a Wonderful, Blessed Easter Holiday.

Peace and Blessings with you all,
Lorenzo
