Uniquely Bol-anon
« on: December 19, 2010, 09:33:15 AM »
In my view, the Bolanon dialect is filled with so many lexicons that distinguishes it from the larger Cebuano Dialect, to which Bol-anon is part of. There are distinct colloquialisms in Bohol, one that comes to mind is, "Ijara-Ijara" or "Ijara".

When I study this word, I can see the root word, "Ija", which trasliterally means "His/ Hers". "Ra" merely functions to emphasize the severe importance of the root.

However, when used in a sentence, or in a remark, "Ijara" is supposed emphasize some kind of disgust.

Per se, a man and woman go out on a date. The man buys 2 hotdogs, but instead of giving his date one hotdog, he consumes both of them in front of the woman. The woman, in disgust, exclaims, "IJARA!"

:)

Do you have any other examples of Uniquely Bol-anon phrases / diction?

I think it is pretty much common , or at least generalized that Bol-anons are perhaps one of the most conservative and religious amongst many Filipino groups. Rarely does one get the chance to see and hear this than going to Bohol and talking to the elderly.

Older Bolanons end a sentence or a conversation with , "Pohon lagi, maluuy ang Ginoo," or , "Pohon pohon."

I have never heard this spoken so vividly and redundantly anywhere else besides in Bohol. Bohol and Bolanons, are probably one of the most conservative groups of people in the Philippines.

I don't know if this applies to all Bol-anons, but I have noticed this from talking to my mother (a pure blooded Valenciana) and my auntie (also a pure blooded Valenciana), they end a sentence or a remark with "AN" or "LA".

Per se,

Me: Mommy, asa man si Uncle Jan? Wa man ko kita nija sa nobena ni Senyor Santo Nino.

Mom: Doy, ning adto sija ning palit ug kandila, ngano, naay ka i hisgut para nija AN?

Me: Mommy, unsa gud nang 'AN' 'AN' uy!

Mom: **ning katawa**

hehehe! that is so true, Garlit. I find it so interesting how the older generation say that, in fact, I find myself saying it too, especially when I was in Bohol this summer. How powerful is the force of observational learning. lol

One thing I find quite uniquely Bolanon is the use of 'Ondoy' as a term for endearment, instead of 'Dong'.

In Leyte and Cebu, its common to hear the people use 'Dong...' etc etc.

In Iloilo, and Negros Occidental they use, 'Toto...'

Pero in Bohol (especially in southern to eastern Bohol) they use Ondoy.

Kahinumdum ko sa una, when I was younger, my Lola Nating would call me, she would say, "Ari na, Ondoy Bran Bran, kaon na ta, La!"

Mo respond ko, "Unsa man gi luto nimo, Lola Nating?"

Respond pood sija, "Imong paborito, Ondoy! Pinakbet ug sabao nga baka..."

Ako: ((Ning Dagan sa Kutsina)) ha ha ha

My Lola was Valencianon. Inchik Valencianon.  ;D

When I was in Cebu City, 2010.
(Inside a Cab)
I memorized a conversation (i have photographic memory, lol...)

Me: Please take me to the Ayala Mall, please, driver.
Driver: Yes, Sir. Are you from America, sir?
Me: Of course not.
Driver: (na confused) di ko kasabot, sir, your accent is American sounding, sir.
Me: ((Smirking)) Oh really? you think so?
Driver: Yes, sir.

Me: (switched to Bolanon accent): Dili diay poydi ta mag sinulti ug English, bai? Taga Valencia man jud ko

Driver: (Katawa) Kujawa sir!

Me: (smirking and laughing): Ka ingon ko Cebuano ka, bolanon man pood diay ka, bai

Driver: (laughing): Oo taga Cortes !

Me: Ako Valencianon ko, bai, pero ning move lang ko sa 'america. Ning dako ko didto pero bolanon gihapon.

~~

hehehe tinuod jyud, Mr. Daray. Bisan ning gawas ta sa laing yuta (i was 4 when i left philippines), ug ning dako ta sa gawas, ang dugo sa Bol-anon, ay Bol-anon man gihapon.

Pero naa pood ubang Bol-anon nga ang loyalty sa ilaha ra pood nga pinanggang yuta na tawhan. Para sa nako, I consider myself Valencianon first and foremost. Primero, Valencia. Segundo, Bohol.

True. When I first came to U.S. I have a hard time pronouncing the words like beach sounds like bitch,sheet-s***,beard-bird etc.Now I master the American accent that even some American thinks I grew up here.Still a touch of native sound creep up on my lips once in a while especially after hours of talking to some of my bol-anon friends.Wolfpack gimingaw nako sa niluto nimong Lauja... :)

LOL. can't get rid of the native 'accent' eh?

I always laugh when i see the expression of my American friends when I'm hanging out with them.
We'll be in a friend's house hanging out and my parents will call me and I'll start speaking in Bisaya (with full Bol-anon accent).
My friends will all stop and stare/listen to what I'm saying and afterwards ask/comment, "Dude, what did you just say?"

hehehe. I love being able to sound American one minute and then switch to 'Bolanon' style the next.

One thing that I find uniquely Bolanon is the term, "Jati-Jati'An". A saying that is quite common in Southern Bohol. [Valencia, Dimiao, Garcia-Hernandez]

In Valencia, it is common for the people to also add "AN" or "LA" after a statement.

Eg.,

Boy: Ma, puydi mo adto ta sa Tagbilaran?
Mom: Ngano man doy?
Boy: Naa man gud koy barkada sa Tamblot, Ma.
Mom: Unsa? Jawaang bataa ka! Nag barkada-barkada na diay ka? Sabah diha!
Boy: Di' lagi, Ma, amigo-amiga ra lagi mi.
Mom: Layas! Adto sa simbahan LA!

;D

In Southern Bohol, Eastern Bohol, it is common to call the boy "ONDOY".

I notice that in Tagbilaran, parents call their young sons "DONG" , or "DODONG"

In Valencia, Garcia-Hernandez, Jagna, and even Guindulman, the parents call a young boy as "ONDOY"
