I admire many personal figures in Sacred Scripture, but one who captures my attention will always be the anointed King David. David, came from humble beginnings and was a Sheppard prior to his anointing by the Most High.

David, though was weak, was able to conquer and defeat his enemies, by the Grace of Almighty God. And his song of songs to the Most High is what always touches my heart. His songs to The Lord illustrates the Love of God. And His Unparalleled Might, Justice, Power, Glory, and Beauty.
David pleased and delighted The Almighty by praising him with his voice and songs. Music, when praising God with all your heart, is one of the greatest things. As King David tended his sheep everyday as a shepherd in his younger days, he played on his harp and sang about the glory of God, as well as his love for his Father.

David's Song to The Lord (Psalm 19)

 1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

 2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.

3 There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.

4 Their voice  goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

6 It rises at one end of the heavens
       and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is hidden from its heat.

7 The law of the LORD is perfect,
       reviving the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
       making wise the simple.

8 The precepts of the LORD are right,
       giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant,
       giving light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the LORD is pure,
       enduring forever.
The ordinances of the LORD are sure
       and altogether righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
       than much pure gold;
       they are sweeter than honey,
       than honey from the comb.

 11 By them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?
       Forgive my hidden faults.

 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
       Then will I be blameless,
       innocent of great transgression.

14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
       be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

King David! The Anointed One!

Another favorite figure is Jacob, who is later to be known as Israel, after he wrestled with God The Father. And was blessed by The Almighty. Behold, Jacob saw the Face of God!

22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank. Because Jacob was able to wrestle with the Almighty Himself.

--Genesis 32: 22-32

Another biblical figure that I keep close to my heart is the Blessed Archangel Raphael, Glorious Archangel, One who Stands Before the Throne of God. He is important to me because in a particular passage in scripture, it is revealed to us that our prayers, indeed, rise like incense to the Mighty Lord. As Angels deliver it to the Most High, as what Blessed Raphael did so in the case of Tobit and Sarah.

Scripture declares it so:

Raphael called the two men aside privately and said to them: "Thank God! Give him the praise and the glory. Before all the living, acknowledge the many good things he has done for you, by blessing and extolling his name in song. Before all men, honor and proclaim God's deeds, and do not be slack in praising him.
A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do good, and evil will not find its way to you.
Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than abundance with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold;for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life;

but those habitually guilty of sin are their own worst enemies.
"I will now tell you the whole truth; I will conceal nothing at all from you. I have already said to you, 'A king's secret it is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be made known with due honor.'

I can now tell you that when you, Tobit, and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayer before the Glory of the Lord; and I did the same thing when you used to bury the dead. When you did not hesitate to get up and leave your dinner in order to go and bury the dead, I was sent to put you to the test. At the same time, however, God commissioned me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah.

I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord."

Stricken with fear, the two men fell to the ground.

But Raphael said to them: "No need to fear; you are safe. Thank God now and forever.
As for me, when I came to you it was not out of any favor on my part, but because it was God's will. So continue to thank him every day; praise him with song.
Even though you watched me eat and drink, I did not really do so; what you were seeing was a vision.

So now get up from the ground and praise God. Behold, I am about to ascend to him who sent me; write down all these things that have happened to you." When Raphael ascended they rose to their feet and could no longer see him.

They kept thanking God and singing his praises; and they continued to acknowledge these marvelous deeds which he had done when the angel of God appeared to them.

--Tobit: 12: 6-22

 4 He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
he wept and begged for his favor.
       He found him at Bethel
       and talked with him there-

 5 the LORD God Almighty,
the LORD is his name of renown!

 6 But you must return to your God;
       maintain love and justice,
and wait for your God always.

--Hosea 12: 4-6

Blessed Is Jacob, who was able to wrestle with the Almighty and still survived.
What a man, Jacob must have been!
To have seen the Face of God.

King Solomon the Wise, most favored of God.

One woman said: "By your leave, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth in the house while she was present.
18
On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. We were alone in the house; there was no one there but us two.
19
This woman's son died during the night; she smothered him by lying on him.
20
Later that night she got up and took my son from my side, as I, your handmaid, was sleeping. Then she laid him in her bosom, after she had laid her dead child in my bosom.
21
I rose in the morning to nurse my child, and I found him dead. But when I examined him in the morning light, I saw it was not the son whom I had borne."
22
The other woman answered, "It is not so! The living one is my son, the dead one is yours." But the first kept saying, "No, the dead one is your child, the living one is mine!" Thus they argued before the king.
23
Then the king said: "One woman claims, 'This, the living one, is my child, and the dead one is yours.' The other answers, 'No! The dead one is your child; the living one is mine.'"
24
The king continued, "Get me a sword." When they brought the sword before him,
25
he said, "Cut the living child in two, and give half to one woman and half to the other."
26
The woman whose son it was, in the anguish she felt for it, said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living child--please do not kill it!" The other, however, said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide it!"
27
The king then answered, "Give the first one the living child! By no means kill it, for she is the mother."
28
When all Israel heard the judgment the king had given, they were in awe of him, because they saw that the king had in him the wisdom of God for giving judgment.

--1 Kings 3: 18-28

St. Peter, The Apostle.

He (Jesus) said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,  and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah.

Matthew 16: 16-20

Another important biblical figure that I admire:

St. Michael The Archangel

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

-Jude 1:9

and

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

-Daniel 12:1-3

The Prophet Moses

As the chosen messenger of the Almighty in the old days, by Grace of The Almighty, Moses led the Israelites from bondage in Egypt to the promised land (tho Moses never lived to see the Promise Land)

Moses was raised as a family of Pharaoh, brought as a noble Egyptian, but gave up nobility and riches of a pagan life, to be the voice of the Most High. A messenger to His people, O Israel.

And when she could hide him no longer she took for him a basket made of bulrushes, and daubed it with bitumen and pitch; and she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds at the river's brink. And his sister stood at a distance, to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, and her maidens walked beside the river; she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to fetch it. When she opened it she saw the child; and lo, the babe was crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children. ... And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son; and she named him Moses, for she said, "Because I drew him out of the water."

St. John The Baptist
The Final Prophet of God.

Blessed John the Baptist was the last and final prophet of the Lord Our God.
His ministry in the Jordan, preaching and baptizing in water and fortelling of the salvation of the Lord completed the message by earlier contemporary, Isaiah.

The Prophet Isaiah said:
"The prophet Isaiah had reminded the people to be prepared to receive the Messiah:
Prepare a road for the Lord through the wilderness,
clear a highway across the desert for our God
Every valley shall be lifted up,
every mountain and hill brought down;
the rugged place shall be made smooth
and mountain ranges become a plain."
 (Isaiah 40:3-4)

This was also the message of John the Baptist. He was the voice in the wilderness exhorting the people to be ready, to prepare themselves morally and spiritually to receive the Messiah, who is Christ Jesus.

1  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
2As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
3The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
5And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
 6And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
7And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
8I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
9And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
10And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Mark 1: 1-8

GIDEON, not only because it forms part of my first name but I am also the kind of guy who likes it when the odds are against me...

Gideon, is also very lucky to have been answered concretely by the Lord Our God.

He tested the faith, and The Lord Answered:

36Then Gideon said to God, "You say that you have decided to use me to rescue Israel. 37Well, I am putting some wool on the ground where we thresh the wheat. If in the morning there is dew only on the wool but not on the ground, then I will know that you are going to use me to rescue Israel." 38That is exactly what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the wool and wrung enough dew out of it to fill a bowl with water. 39Then Gideon said to God, "Don't be angry with me; let me speak just once more. Please let me make one more test with the wool. This time let the wool be dry, and the ground be wet." 40 That night God did that very thing. The next morning the wool was dry, but the ground was wet with dew.
Judges 6:36-40

God chose Gideon, to remind the people of Israel from worshiping foreign idols such as idols of Belezebub, Baal, Ashera, etc. Reaffirmed the faith. And faithfulness of the Lord. That His people, O Israel, were to worship only The Lord. For there are no other but Him. And the Lord Our God is a jealous God.

With his mighty hand, he smote the cities of Sodom and Gamorrah into oblivion for their sexual perversity and blasphemies, with righteous hand, he annihilated the armies of Assyria that threatened Judea.

And with His Outstretched Hand, he punished Egypt, and swallowed Pharaoh's armies by the waters of the Red Sea.

Mighty and Holy is Our God!
To Him, belong all Glory, Honor and Praise!

Job. Because of his faithfulness to God.
Honoring God even as he was tested. And a faith that was rewarded. :)

St. Stephen.

Because he was a martyr of Christ. He placed his total trust in Christ Jesus.

I agree he's also my favorite figure. The epitome of the entire Bible.
my favorite figure is no one else but - JESUS

Mine too. He's the epitome of the entire Bible, form the prophecies to the revelations.
No other person to follow but Him.

We are already told what will happen to those who deny Jesus Christ.

1 John 2:23 resounds, "Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also."

and again in Mathew 10: 33

Jesus Said Unto Them, "But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven."

Now faith is the assurance that what we hope for will come about and the certainty that what we cannot see exists.
--Hebrews 11:1

For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?
--Romans 8:24

while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
--2 Corinthians 4:18

but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house-- whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
--Hebrews 3:6

for we walk by faith, not by sight!
--2 Corinthians 5:7

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way  from the land,  beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind,  he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

The wind and the storm is the transliteration of fear, and doubt of faith. Storms of our lives and the power of the evil unseen forces that influence even a faithful individual. These are natural, as even Peter, the first Apostle, doubted and was influenced. Yet despite his iniquities and his frailties, as a man, he nonetheless walked on the water. :)

The meaning ani, what Jesus is telling us--is to hold strong to your faith. And do not let temptation, fears, forces and powers that are seen or unseen challenge and affect your faith in Jesus.

Did not Jesus silence the storm with a mere word? :)
And when Peter began to sink because of fear and doubt, here merely begged Jesus, "LORD SAVE ME". And Jesus immediately saved him.

Call Jesus' Name now, and he will rescue you from any fears, doubt, and forces (seen or unseen) that are affecting your faith.

May the Lord God bless us, Brothers and Sisters!

Jeremiah rebuking King Joakim and reminding Joakim the evil he has committed before the eyes of the Lord God of Hosts.

---

And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias the prophet, after that the king had burnt the volume, and the words that Baruch had written from the mouth of Jeremias, saying:
Take thee again another volume: and write in it all the former words that were in the first volume which Joakim the king of Juda hath burnt.
And thou shalt say to Joakim the king of Juda: Thus saith the Lord: Thou hast burnt that volume, saying: Why hast thou written therein, and said: The king of Babylon shall come speedily, and shall lay waste this land: and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

Therefore thus saith the Lord against Joakim the king of Juda: He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day, and to the frost by night.
And I will punish him, and his seed and his servants, for their iniquities, and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Juda all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they have not heard.
And Jeremias took another volume, and gave it to Baruch the son of Nerias the scribe: who wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the book which Joakim the king of Juda had burnt with fire: and there were added besides many more words than had been before.

--Jeremiah 36: 26-32

The Prophet Jonas.

Ang kaluwasan anaa man kang Jehova.

Jonas 2:10
Ug gisultihan ni Jehova ang isda, ug kini misuka kang Jonas ngadto sa yuta nga mamala.

My favorite Bible character is Job.

Story of
Job
Job and his wife Lived in Uz.
Job had seven sons and 3 daughter all grown with families of their own.
Job had much land and livestock and men to help him work.
Job loved God and worshipped God everyday.

One day, the devil said to God, "You have blessed Job and given him everything is the only reason Job worships you.  If you would take away your blessings, Job would no longer praise you."
God said to the devil, " Do what you want to all that Job has but do not touch him."
The devil left God and began his evil work.

Suddenly a messenger came to Job saying, "All your oxen and donkeys are gone.  All of the men that helped you are gone."
While the messenger was still speaking, a second messenger came and said, " A huge fire has killed all the sheep."
And still a third messenger arrived saying, "Some thieves came and stole all your camels."
And still a fourth messenger arrived saying, "All of your sons and daughter were eating together when suddenly there came a huge wind and the house fell on them."
Job was so sad.
In a single day, he had lost everything.
He lost his land,
He lost his livestock.
He lost his sons and daughters.
Job fell to his knees and began worshipping God saying, "..the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away, blessed be the name of the LORD."
After all those bad things happened to Job, He still praised God.

The devil was upset because Job was still praising God.
So he went to God and said, "If Job were hurting in his body, he would not praise you.
God answered the devil saying, "Do what you want but do not kill him."
The devil delighted in giving Job very painful sores all over his body from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
Job had nothing
He lost his land,
He lost his livestock.
He lost his Sons and daughters.
Now he was in more pain with the sores all over his body.
Job suffered greatly.
Job's wife said to him, "Let it go.  Curse God and die"
Job answered her, "You talk like a foolish woman.  Do we only take the good and not the bad?"
Still he praised God.

Jobs friends had heard about what had happened to Job.
They decided they would go and be with him.
His friends sat with Job for one week.
His friends told Job that he had sinned and that is why all these horrible things had happened.
Job insisted that he loved God and he never sinned against him.
They would not believe him.
All of them told Job he had sinned and he must confess his sin to make things right.
Job still insisted that he had not sinned against God.
Finally his friends were quiet.  They had nothing to say to him because they felt that Job was wrong.  They thought Job felt was better than everyone else.  They knew Job had sinned and wouldn't admit it.
Finally, God spoke.
God said "Who is this that gives advice without knowledge, where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Answer if you have understanding!"
God spoke to Job of all the things he created.
God created the heavens, the earth and all that is on the earth.
Job said "I know that you can do everything, and that no thought can be withheld from you.  Therefore, I have spoken things that I did not understand.  But now I have heard you and now I understand. "
God said to Job's friends, "You have not spoken the truth of me as Job has.  Take seven bulls and seven rams and go to Job and offer them up for yourselves.  Job will pray for you and I will accept his prayer for you. "
Fearing the wrath of God, the men did as God had told them.
God accepted Job's prayer and was very pleased with Job.

As Job prayed for his friends, God returned his fortune that had been taken away by the devil.
God gave Job twice as much as he had in the beginning.
God gave him twice as many sheep.
God gave him twice as many donkeys.
God gave him twice as many camels.
God gave him twice as many yoke of oxen.
God gave him 7 sons and 3 daughters.
His daughters were the most beautiful in the land.
After all of this, Job lived 140 years and he loved God and praised him every day.

The story of Job is an inspiration. Of what True Faith is all about.

And his account illustrates to us the FAITHFULLNESS of the Good Lord.

:)

It illustrates the FATHERHOOD of GOD.

Another favorite biblical figure is Sarah and Tobit, in the Book of Tobit (found in Old Testament).

The story of Tobit, Tobias, Sarah and the Angel Raphael illustrates God's faithfullness.

This particular prayer is illustrative of how a couple should be towards each other and how their faith in God for deliverance and provision. Powerful.

:

Blessed are you, O God of our fathers; praised be your name forever and ever. Let the heavens and all your creation praise you forever. You made Adam and you gave him his wife Eve to be his help and support; and from these two the human race descended. You said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a partner like himself.' Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine not because of lust, but for a noble purpose. Call down your mercy on me and on her, and allow us to live together to a happy old age."

-Tobit 8:5-7

Happy is a man in the gift of a life partner that the Lord Our God gives to us.
A man given a woman to love, protect, uphold, defend, to love, to father her children, and to die with her in ripe old age.

Happy is the man who is able to find his other 'half', which the LORD OF OUR FATHERS, THE ETERNAL LIVING GOD, WHOSE TRUSTWORTHINESS IS DELIGHTFUL TO THE FAITHFUL.

St. John the Baptist

Luke 3:2-18

"...the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you,
That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people."

2:2  As a lily among thorns, So is my love among the daughters. Beloved

2:3  As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, His fruit was sweet to my taste.

2:4  He brought me to the banquet hall. His banner over me is love.

2:5  Strengthen me with raisins, Refresh me with apples; For I am faint with love.

2:6  His left hand is under my head. His right hand embraces me.

2:7  I adjure you, daughters of Jerusalem, By the roes, or by the hinds of the field, That you not stir up, nor awaken love, Until it so desires.

2:8  The voice of my beloved! Behold, he comes, Leaping on the mountains, Skipping on the hills.

2:9  My beloved is like a roe or a young hart. Behold, he stands behind our wall! He looks in at the windows. He glances through the lattice.

2:10  My beloved spoke, and said to me, Rise up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.

2:11  For, behold, the winter is past. The rain is over and gone.

2:12  The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing has come, And the voice of the turtle-dove is heard in our land.

2:13  The fig tree ripens her green figs. The vines are in blossom; They give forth their fragrance. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, And come away. Lover

2:14  My dove in the clefts of the rock, In the hiding places of the mountainside, Let me see your face. Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.

2:15  Catch for us the foxes, The little foxes that spoil the vineyards; For our vineyards are in blossom. Beloved

2:16  My beloved is mine, and I am his. He browses among the lilies.

2:17  Until the day is cool, and the shadows flee away, Turn, my beloved, And be like a roe or a young hart on the mountains of Bether.

God is Great!

The Prophet Elijah

The LORD Speaks to Elijah
But the LORD said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
10 Elijah replied, "I have zealously served the LORD God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too."
11 "Go out and stand before me on the mountain," the LORD told him. And as Elijah stood there, the LORD passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

(1 Kings 19: 9-13)

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

Why? : Because tho he was a sinner, found justification and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. And Christ Loved him..

He entered and was passing through Jericho. There was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, and couldn't because of the crowd, because he was short. He ran on ahead, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house." He hurried, came down, and received him joyfully. When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, "He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner."
Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much."

Jesus said to him, "Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost."

St. Stephen the Martyr

St. Stephen , empowered with the gift of Fortitude, died for his faith...

Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and others of those from Cilicia and Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they secretly instigated some men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God." They stirred up the people as well as the elders and the scribes; then they suddenly confronted him, seized him, and brought him before the council. They set up false witnesses who said, "This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law; for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses handed on to us." And all who sat in the council looked intently at him, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Then the high priest asked him, "Are these things so?"

And Stephen replied: "Brothers and fathers, listen to me. You are forever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it."

When they heard these things, they became enraged and ground their teeth at Stephen. But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he died.

Simeon

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.

He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,

he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

"Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word,
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel."

The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

"Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted
(and you yourself a sword will pierce)  so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

Disbelief, error, sin, indifference and the lot is defeated by the Words of Christ. His Truth lighted the way....

The Samaritan Woman by the well...

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. [1]

7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you Am He.”

27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

Nicodemus

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again  he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You  must be born again.’ 8 The wind  blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you  do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.  14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world,  that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Story of

Job's faith is the prototype of the kind of faith and trust Christians are to have in God. An unwavering faith, a faith that will be tested , time and time again by the devil (may God rebuke him) in order to falter the faith. Job, despite his trials and tribulations, does not suffer his faith in God. Because he stood the test, and because his faith did not waver, God rewarded him thousand fold.

The story of Job is the thesis of the foundation of faith in The Almighty. His story illustrates to us the sincerity of God's Love and Joy to those who Trust in Him.

The Story of Job illustrates the Fatherhood of God.

Bartimaeus

He was saved because of his faith. His joyous exultation in the Christ was his salvation....

46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.

But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “LORD, let me recover my sight.”

52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

I like Joseph the son of Jacob, "Joseph the Dreamer".

He was sold to slavery, then he went to jail for years but he never complained because he knows God is with him.

Knowing that the Holy Spirit is with me makes me feel so secure, even things turn out bad like losing a job, I won't be afraid because I know God will provide.

Joseph - jail time brings him more closer to God because he can pray all day.

Me - No job brings me closer to God because I can pray all day.

I'm a little worried now that I have a job but I know God is still with me and that makes me feel secure.

Yes, brother, The Lord is with you through it all, through any circumstance, whether it be joyful or a loss. I like your preference of character; namely Joseph. I was sitting as I read your post and could not help but reflect on how God speaks to us through Joseph's actions:

1. He was loving and loyal to His God (not afraid to speak of God even to pharaoh!)
2. Instead of revenging against his wicked brothers who condemned him, he forgave them ...
3. He was united with his father who loved him...

I would like to say to you, brother, that you are indeed never alone. And that the comfort of God , who knows no barriers to His Love, is with you all the time. Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior said in Matthew 14:27, "But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be afraid," he said. "Take courage. I am here!"

Peter, the First Apostle

Matthew 14:22-33

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance[a] from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

 29"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

My remark:

Peter, filled with the joyous exaltation of Christ and the Holy Spirit, declared to walk with Christ. He walked on water because he saw Christ, was inspired to be with Christ, yet, when the winds and the storms blew all the stronger, began to loose faith. And began to sink. It is important to note that the lake, as the object being walked on, is the symbolism of the journey of faith. Christ, being Salvation and the Goal. The winds and the storms represents the world. The world is against faith, and will try its best to counter the faith in Christ, will test your faith, and will do its best to deceive those who believe. Since the world belongs to satan, may God rebuke him, it will always counter and try to counter the message of Christ and Salvation.

Peter, as a sinner, as a man, begins to doubt when troubles were around him. As a man, he was attacked by the devils. But his faith perfected what his mortality limited. He cried out, "Lord, Save Me!"

This, this very action, is the testimony and manifestation of fortitude, wisdom, piety, and knowledge. This request, nullifies the very instances of worldly attacks. For it manifests the believer's trust in Christ. In God. You see, Christ knew that Peter would doubt, He knows everything. He is the Alpha and the Omega. But despite Peter's lacking and questioning faith, Christ saved him. Matthew Chapter 14 verse 31 declares, "Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him!". Christ also reminds Peter, "Oh you of little faith! Why do you doubt?"

When Christ tells Peter this, He tells all of us this. You see, Christ told Peter to 'Come to Me'. It is a command. When he told Peter this, He promises protection, counsel, and most of all His unquestioning Love and Care. Peter doubted , and because of this, resulted in his sinking. It is a sign to us that even the apostles, even Peter, the first pope, even himself doubted. But Christ reminds us in this that it is human to doubt, and reminds us to shear away from doubt if possible, and instead, trust in Him.

Peter, in this case, is the proto-Christian. An individual who yearns to be with Jesus, but is tempted, attacked by the world, but Christ's Word and Promise, and Action declares and Re-Assures us that He will be there to save us.

When Christ tells Peter, "Oh you of little faith! Why do you doubt!", He is also telling us this. And He reminds us, to believe in Him.

Just as he saved Peter from the waters, so will He save us....if we trust and call out to Him.

Blessings of Jesus Christ Our Lord be to you my brothers and sisters,
Lorenzo

The demon possessed boy in Mark 9

When the man asks Jesus to help “If you can,” Jesus tells him, “Everything is possible for him who believes.” The man then tells Jesus, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

-Mark 9

Importance:
When your faith is weak, ask for strength, when you know you are faltering, ask for guidance.
For you can do all things, through God who works through grace...

Thomas, the Reluctant Believer...

Thomas. For his reluctance to believe and needing to see... And the fact that Jesus met him where he was gives me hope. Thomas had to touch the Lord to believe that He was truly resurrected…none of the other apostles needed that…but Thomas did, and Jesus accommodated him.

“Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Mother Mary, The Mother of The Word Made Flesh.

Mary’s already been mentioned, but I have to say a few things about her. I think that the mother of Christ gets a bad wrap in most Protestant circles because all we ever hear about is how she wasn’t sinless, wasn’t a perpetual virgin, wasn’t assumed into heaven, etc. But by focusing on the false doctrines about Mary, we miss the beautiful story that the gospels paint about her. I can’t imagine being a 16 year-old girl (or however old she was) and hearing from God that I was about to be pregnant. Mary had everything to lose from this deal. She lived in a society that was not known for its kindness towards wayward women and their illegitimate children. She must have expected that her wedding with Joseph would be lost. After all, she was about to be carrying somebody else’s baby. Plus the normal fears that every woman has about pregnancy and raising children. I mean, how do you take on the responsibility of raising up the Son of God?? Yet in the face of all of this, Mary simply says, “I’m your servant Lord; do whatever you think is best.”
What an amazing faith!!

Simon, the Zealot.

Simon Zelotes, the eleventh apostle, was chosen by Simon Peter. He was an able man of good ancestry and lived with his family at Capernaum. He was twenty-eight years old when he became attached to the apostles. He was a fiery agitator and was also a man who spoke much without thinking. He had been a merchant in Capernaum before he turned his entire attention to the patriotic organization of the Zealots.

Simon Zelotes was given charge of the diversions and relaxation of the apostolic group, and he was a very efficient organizer of the play life and recreational activities of the twelve.

Simon's strength was his inspirational loyalty. When the apostles found a man or woman who floundered in indecision about entering the kingdom, they would send for Simon. It usually required only about fifteen minutes for this enthusiastic advocate of salvation through faith in God to settle all doubts and remove all indecision, to see a new soul born into the "liberty of faith and the joy of salvation."

Simon's great weakness was his material-mindedness. He could not quickly change himself from a Jewish nationalist to a spiritually minded internationalist. Four years was too short a time in which to make such an intellectual and emotional transformation, but Jesus was always patient with him.

The one thing about Jesus which Simon so much admired was the Master's calmness, his assurance, poise, and inexplicable composure.

Although Simon was a rabid revolutionist, a fearless firebrand of agitation, he gradually subdued his fiery nature until he became a powerful and effective preacher of "Peace on earth and good will among men." Simon was a great debater; he did like to argue. And when it came to dealing with the legalistic minds of the educated Jews or the intellectual quibblings of the Greeks, the task was always assigned to Simon.

He was a rebel by nature and an iconoclast by training, but Jesus won him for the higher concepts of the kingdom of heaven. He had always identified himself with the party of protest, but he now joined the party of progress, unlimited and eternal progression of spirit and truth. Simon was a man of intense loyalties and warm personal devotions, and he did profoundly love Jesus.

The Master had many talks with Simon, but he never fully succeeded in making an internationalist out of this ardent Jewish nationalist. Jesus often told Simon that it was proper to want to see the social, economic, and political orders improved, but he would always add: "That is not the business of the kingdom of heaven. We must be dedicated to the doing of the Father's will. Our business is to be ambassadors of a spiritual government on high, and we must not immediately concern ourselves with aught but the representation of the will and character of the divine Father who stands at the head of the government whose credentials we bear." It was all difficult for Simon to comprehend, but gradually he began to grasp something of the meaning of the Master's teaching.

After the dispersion because of the Jerusalem persecutions, Simon went into temporary retirement. He was literally crushed. As a nationalist patriot he had surrendered in deference to Jesus' teachings; now all was lost. He was in despair, but in a few years he rallied his hopes and went forth to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom.

He surrendered his fiery nationalism to preach the Good News...
He surrendered life in the mortal world, for the promises of the Eternal Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

Cornelius, the Roman Centurion

Acts 10,
"There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.

He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an ANGEL of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God."

The meaning and message of Cornelius' Life for every Christian:

1. God is ever watching, expectant, and patient.
2. God observes every good thing that you do, in this case, Cornelius' giving alms to the poor, and prayers, faith
3. Brotherly kindness is pleasing and proves worthy unto the Divine Throne of God.

Another great favorite person in the Holy Bible is Moses.

His is the story of God's promise to His People Israel.

It is through Moses that God is revealed to the people.

When the Hebrews asked of their God's Name, The Lord responds, "I AM WHO AM".

The Angel Michael. Why? He was the one that thrust satan into hell.

The name 'MICHA-EL' , a hebrew name, means "WHO IS LIKE GOD?"

Miriam, the sister of Moses. I like her because she saved Moses (Exodus 2) and was the one who put him in a basket , which would later be found by Pharaoh's own daughter , who adopted Moses. Miriam played a role in Exodus and in God's promise to Israel that He would save them from Egyptian bondage.

In modern perspective, it shows one the love of an older sister. Sisters , like Miriam, played as mother-like figures. In a way, I see the similarity of Miriam and Mother Mary, who would later play a role in new testament covenant.

Miriam, like Mother Mary, was integral to Hebrew Prophesy. Both women, Miriam and Mary, had to evade the blades of evil men who wanted to deny prophetic liberation. Miriam placed Moses in a weed basket and thus made sure he was not a victim of Pharaoh's decree that ever hebrew male child should suffer death. Mother Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ Lord, evaded the conniving scheme of King Herod, who sent his soldiers to kill every hebrew baby child in the town of Nazareth for fear of the prophesy of the coming Messiah.

It is important to note that in both instances, in Moses' and in Jesus Christ's, the antagonists all failed in the end. Pharaoh Setti eventually died, and his son, Rameses II failed in keeping the Hebrews and eventually lost them to Moses' return. Egypt was humbled. In the case of King Herod, he eventually died with worms coming out of his body (as he was cursed by God, for trying to Kill THE WORD MADE FLESH). Herod's own son failed miserably in containing the Messiah and actually indirectly played a role in Salvation History. Christ was crucified , a necessary sacrificial death, in order for all of mankind to be saved, for those who believeth in Christ Jesus.

It is interesting, really, how God uses the aid of women, powerful women, in the manifestation of His Prophecies. Throughout old testament and new testament.

:)

The Samaritan Woman At The Well

4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

Zachaeus, the Tax Collector

Luke 19:1-10:

At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
Now a man there named Zacchaeus,
who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
was seeking to see who Jesus was;
but he could not see him because of the crowd,
for he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus,
who was about to pass that way.
When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said,
“Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must stay at your house.”
And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying,
“He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord,
“Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor,
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I shall repay it four times over.”

And Jesus said to him,
“Today salvation has come to this house
because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.

For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost.”

A Reflection on the Story of Zacchaeus , the Tax Collector:

This reading from Luke’s Gospel is yet another example of the Sacred Author describing the faith experience of those who encountered Jesus during his earthly ministry.  Luke does not describe mighty works nor the action of eyewitnesses in these passages.  Rather, he emphasizes the faith-driven responses of those individuals who encounter Jesus and recognize him as the Christ.    Other passages that are similar include the “ten lepers” (Lk 17:11-19) and the “pharisee and the tax collector” (Lk 18:9-14).

Notable in this passage is the fact that Zacchaeus is comfortably removed from Jesus and his entourage, as he prefers to observe from a tree.  It is Jesus who calls Zacchaeus down from the tree.  More ironic is the business-like conversation that Jesus undertakes with Zacchaeus.  Jesus does not speak to him of faith or God, but rather tells Zacchaeus matter-of-factly, “I must stay at your house.”

It is Zacchaeus who responds to both Jesus and the sniggering of the crowd with the promise that, I will give half of my possessions to the poor,
and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over!

The encounter with Christ has initiated a conversion of heart in Zacchaeus, which is caused not so much by the words of Jesus as it is by the faith that Zacchaeus has.

History and tradition suggest that Jericho, where this story took place, was a center of balsam trade. Zacchaeus would have collected taxes on the balsam for the benefit of the state.

The Eastern and Russian Orthodox hold a long-standing tradition that Matthias, the apostle elected to replace Judas, is in fact “Zacchaeus Matthias.” This tradition has its origins in the writings of Clement of Alexandria.  He argues that in the second century that Zaccaeus the Tax Collector is surnamed Matthias.

There are divergent traditions about the missionary work of Zacchaeus Matthias.  Some hold that he went to Rome with Peter, and that he was executed in Rome.  Other traditions suggest Zacchaeus Matthias preached in Egypt and Ethiopia, then returned to Galilee or Jerusalem, where he was stoned to death.
