Japan and Ukraine are expected to sign a bilateral agreement as early as April to cooperate in responding to nuclear plant accidents, an Ukrainian government official said Friday.
The pact is designed to promote exchanges of data and know-how between the two countries in the case of accidents at nuclear power plants.
The agreement is aimed at protecting humans and the environment, Ukraine's Emergencies Minister Viktor Baloha said after a meeting with Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Toichi Sakata.
Amid the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeastern Japan, Japan and Ukraine began talks on the pact on Jan. 26 in Kiev, south of Chernobyl, the site of one of the world's worst nuclear disasters in 1986.
