GMA cites
energy conservation gains
Iloilo City (28 June 2005) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo revealed that the government has gained grounds in its
energy conservation campaign even as she said we must drive the impetus from our gains.
Last year alone, the country saved 1.2 billion pesos form best energy efficiencies in households, government and industry. Twenty government agencies are currently using coco diesel for
fuel. The use of coco diesel is expected to be fully implemented across the transport sector together with CNG in August. The government also hopes to have Ethanol rolling out within a year and a half. With the use of the alternative energy sources, a potential savings of 177 million is expected in a year by government.
According to the President, the government saved 144 million from the implementation of a 4-day Workweek. Likewise the Napocor is expected to reduce fuel utilization to the extent of 5.9 billion as a result of systemic improvements in power generation and delivery.
'We have to take energy conservation seriously and without complacency'' the President said. According to the President " We're in the midst of a threat larger than what the world expected. And the world has something to do with it. The world must also have something to do with looking for its solutions. The fact that oil prices are now rising to historic levels further underscores the importance of the world community working to reduce oil price volatility while increasing supplies. Only then will the negative impact on global economies be mitigated."
A bright spot in the country's oil situation was the offer of the President of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh to provide the Philippines with oil. According to President Arroyo, Gambia recently tracked oil and they have five blocks that they are bidding out for concession. However they are giving the Philippine Oil Exploration Company one block of oil without requiring it to go to the criteria of the other proponents. The President said this was due to the fact that Gambia was very thankful to the Philippines for providing education to 70 percent of Gambia's experts. "They feel we are responsible in a very big way for the viability of their independence and they are reciprocating " the President revealed.
The President called on the active participation of the entire industrial, commercial and transport as well as residential consumers in the nationwide effort to reduce our dependence on imported oil. (PIA-6)
