With sports or action photography, most of the time you're going to want to stop the action, and to do that you'll have to switch to shutter priority mode (or manual mode if you're comfortable with it), and then shoot at a speed of at least 1/640 of a second (or faster) to stop the motion and keep your image sharp. The slowest you can generally get away with is 1/500 of a second. Go with 1/640 or higher for better results (there are times when you're going to intentionally want to shoot at slower speeds so you can blur parts of the photo to exaggerate the movement and speed, but for most situations, you'll want to freeze the motion with a faster shutter speed like we're using here).

If you're shooting wildlife, when you're composing the image, don't frame it so close that the animal has nowhere to go. In other words, give the animal some space in front of the direction it's going for a much stronger composition one that tells a story. If you crop in too tight and don't leave room for the animal to exit the frame, it's almost like trapping them in your shot, and the photo will look uncomfortable to the viewer. When you're composing in the viewfinder, leave some extra space to "run" in front of your subject, and your photo will be that much stronger for it.
Bonus - behind the lens

Jer, I find the rangefinder annoying when you attempt to shoot on wildlife.
Is there any way you can get a shot while dispensing with the tiny shaft of red light fixing the focus?
Dont know if this still comes out if i go shutter priority though, perhaps ill try.

By the way unsa diay na model na camera nmo? Not clear on the question. Are you talking about the focusing points on the range finder or AF illuminator (this emmit a tiny light on a subject to measure read outs within the scene)

This is the official manual
http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/noprint/D40_noprint.pdf
But I find Ken Rockwells manual much more informative than the official.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/d40-users-guide.pdf
Naa pod mga videos sa YouTube which are helpful pod. Ug update ang firmware sa imo cam kay it really improves the performance.
Cheers
