The phrase “man’s best friend” may have never been more true. John Unger adopted Schoep when the the shepherd mix was just a tiny bundle of fur. The pair of life-long companions go to Lake Superior most evenings so Schoep can have the chance to rest free from arthritis pain. Schoep has difficulty sleeping, so John Unger and his best pal routinely travel to nearby Lake Superior to get in the water together. The movement of the water soothes the sweet old dog, lulling him to sleep, Radar Online notes.

“To be honest with you, I don’t think I’d be here if I didn’t have Schoep with me that night. He just snapped me out of it. I don’t know how to explain it. He just snapped me out of it. I just want to do whatever I can for this dog because he basically saved my a**,” John Unger told the Duluth Tribune.

Hannah Stonehouse Hudson captured the now famous photo of Unger cradling Schoep in the water on Lake Superior. Hudson stated during an interview with the Huffington Post that the image of the man cradling his sleeping dog in the water is in no way staged.

“This is in no way posed. I hate posed photos. They never ever capture the true essence of anything,” the Stonehouse Photography owner stated during the interview.

Donations roll in for Web sensation Schoep the dog

DULUTH, Minn. - It says something about the joyous frenzy that has arisen around John Unger and his dog, Schoep, this week that Unger and photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson have had to bring in a public relations agent.

“My phone is ringing off the hook,” Hudson said during a phone interview on Thursday from the Upper Peninsula, where she was heading for an assignment. “I have 500 unanswered e-mails at this point.”

Hudson took the shot seen around the world — Unger holding the blissfully slumbering Schoep, his 19-year-old shepherd mix, in the waters of Lake Superior — on July 31 and posted it on her Facebook page on Aug. 1. By Sunday, it had gotten 1.8 million views; the last she checked it was close to 3 million.

The unassuming Unger had been interviewed by Duluth and Minneapolis TV stations on Thursday. “It’s generally I’m taking care of the stuff up here and she’s doing the nationals,” Unger said of Hudson. Then he laughed at what he’d just said. “That’s just bizarre.”

Helping Unger and Hudson manage the attention and demands on their time is Julie McGarvie Unger, John Unger’s sister-in-law, who has a career in public relations.

“It’s nothing but interviews now, where before it was nothing but berries,” said John Unger, who is a caretaker on the fruit farm outside of Bayfield where he lives. “That’s all I had to think about before was berries.”

Besides, Schoep is benefitting from all of the attention. A couple of weeks ago, Unger had taken his dog to Bay Area Animal Hospital in Ashland. He got pain medication for Schoep but couldn’t afford more extensive treatment. But after learning about the dog’s story, anonymous donors made it possible for Schoep to get the supplement glucosamine along with laser treatments to treat his arthritis.



“John is a great guy, but he just doesn’t have any money,” said the veterinarian, Dr. Erik Haukaas. “Schoep is a great dog and everybody has responded to this, and we have received a number of donations. So we are now able to do everything possible for the dog.”

Hudson and Unger also stand to benefit financially. The print is for sale online in a variety of formats, and they will split the proceeds 50-50. Hudson said she hopes to use her share of whatever money results to fulfill “a dream of mine,” but wouldn’t say exactly what that dream is. “It involves dogs and it involves photography.”

Unger simply wants to pay off some bills and pay back some loans. “I’ve had to borrow money at times,” he said. “The generous people from this community have helped me with a loan here and there when I’ve needed it.”

For all the changes, the one thing that can’t change is that Schoep is an old dog with degenerative arthritis.

good news!  the heartbroken, unassuming 49-year-old bachelor john unger received hundreds of emails (he learned to use the internet only last february) and already many women from around the world have asked if he's single.  he is.  also, he said something like he kind of welcomes the possibility of meeting the right woman because where he is, he doesn't get to meet women (i presume women who aren't married).

the news feature on this is somewhere out there in the internet.  i failed to cut and paste it because it's a website that closes before one can read thoroughly, unless one logs in.  well, i'm not too keen logging in on other websites...

my point?  i wish you could meet someone like him, lolla... pardon me.

(hehe, my banana republic once wore his hair in a ponytail too when he was younger.)

Sometimes The Internet Doesn’t Suck

How a picture of a man and his dog unleashed a torrent of human kindness.

Some days it's easy to think that the internet was a terrible, terrible idea.  Reading through comments on YouTube or IMDB or Yahoo! will often bring despair - we humans, for all our technological advances, remain petty, ugly, hateful shits.

But every now and again something happens that not only restores my faith in humanity but also in the internet as a force for something other than spawning horrific brony subcultures.  Such a story concerns the picture above, which you've probably seen by now on Reddit or Facebook or Twitter or any number of sites online.  That picture is John Unger, floating in Lake Superior with his dog Schoep.  It looks cute, but it's got a deeper meaning - Schoep has severe arthritis and may need to be put down.  Unger brings Schoep to Lake Superior for water therapy, allowing the dog to float weightlessly and ease the pain in his joints, letting him get some rest.

     Unger cried as he said, “People from all over are doing this. I can’t believe it.  So much has come in already in donations that I don’t have to worry about anything at the vet anymore.”

    All of the donors are anonymous.  “How do I thank them?” he said.  “It’s just such an amazing thing.”

We cover topics like serial killers and exploitation movies and weird comic books and stupid toys, but in reality there's nothing quite as badass as the idea that people can be so simply decent to each other.  It's getting a little dusty in here - I have to wipe my eyes.

"It's probably one of the worst things I've seen," Union Pacific Special Agent Sal Pina, who untied the animal from the tracks after the close call on April 2, said in a statement released Tuesday.

"I've never seen something like this," said Pina, who owns the same breed of dog.

Riverside officials said the dog was healthy and friendly. Although he made several TV appearances, he's no publicity hound; a vet tech takes him home every night to work on his timid temperament, officials said.

Hundreds of adoption offers from across the country poured in and officials said they expect Banjo -- named after old traffic signals found on some rail lines -- will have a new home by Monday.
