Job Mismatch blamed for unemployment in the Philippines
« on: March 19, 2009, 03:13:15 PM »
http://www.gmanews.tv/video/38548/QTV-Job-mismatch-hounds-applicants-despite-job-vacancies

According to this link, one of the main reasons of unemployment or underemployment in the Philippines is job mismatch which means that the academic qualifications of the filipinos do not seem to match the demands of the job market.

One good system I have learned here in Germany is that kids cannot just simply choose the course they want, this must match with their mental abilities and propensity.  Meaning if you are very bad in Math, it would be hard for you to grab a "platz" , which literally means place of space connotating a limited place at the university.

On the otherhand, Filipinos normally follow trends as what is "hot" abroad, thereby over producing nurses, etc..

It is about time that the CHED reviews the curriculum, discarding unnecessary subjects and give more focus to practical knowledge than theory.

There is also a need to reinforce highschool and elementary education.  I am a teacher at the university and I have personally noticed first year students who are not yet mentally ready for university education.

It would might as well be helpful to integrate foreign languages as an elective.  This is of course expensive because there are only few foreign language teachers in the Philippines but this would give us a very good advantage.

We already have good reputation abroad, let us not waste it.

Only through a better education , we can be globally competetive.

so you mean first year college are not mentally prepared for university or college, this is a joke,we filipinos have a good foundation in education, job mismatch is the only reason the govt can use to ease the global problem for job losses, site an example what the govt can help to those OFW who lost their jobs, offered training at TESDA for more qualification,is this the right thing to offer?how about offering and finding jobs somewhere else or offer money assistance for their family instead..what about their plans to make the nursing course to 5 years course?unbeleivable idea..

Are you a first year college student?

Please constructively consider the following suggested corrections:
first year college - first year college students (you mean)
site an example - cite an example
unbeleivable - unbelievable
the global problem for - the global problem of

Please always take note that every sentence must have a subject and a predicate.  This is basic in English.  Very simple to follow.

Are you sure that majority of the Filipino first year college students are capable of a collegiate English listening and reading comprehension and writing proficiency?

Offering money assistance to the family? funny.

Good foundation in Education? That's why Filipinos are second to the last in the entire of Southeast Asia for Math and Sciences in primary and elementary level, because we have a good foundation in education.

Well, "good" is relative.  Maybe good for the stone age era.

The quality of education is of course not only measured through English Proficiency but If we do claim that our English proficiency is good enough based on international standards,  we should think twice.

informal education man ng ila-- training.

atong gihisgutan , formal education man? di ba?

You are talking of competitiveness.

unya, dili man niya matarong iyang eninglis?

sa laing bahin, kontento ra diay ta?

nga tigpadala ta ug domestic helper? construction worker?

apology for my wrong spelling mam,and also for my wrong sentence,so are you perfect enough for all of these just because you're a teacher,i am not a first year college as you stated,im a licensed mechanical engineer and currently working and living in england but unfortunately,im working at the reception in ramada hotels,i had no problem communicating with the english people so far for my 11 years here in england.and the topic is clear job mismatch, how could this happened?give me a valid reason.

Edna, I did not mean to demean you.  I only set you as a good example as you were so eager to claim that the quality of education in the Philippines is good and that first year students are generally ready for college education which isn't at all times the case.

Even now as you told me, you are a good example of underemployment.  You are a degree holder in Engineering but working as a receptionist in a hotel.

This is the reality which we want in the future not to happen.  We want you to be competetive as an engineer, globally.

Job mismatch Edna, is that when your qualifications do not seem to match the required skills of the job.  Like for example, a nurse applying as a lawyer, which is impossible.  This is hyperbole though, but it is an example of job mismatch.

This is true in the Philippines.  Not maybe the main reason of unemployment, but it is a contributing factor.

in a perfect world madam puede na imong giingon - an engineer to be an engineer and not just a receptionist in a hotel.  pero in reality its all about how you earn a living with dignity or say how you make money.  kadaghan diha doctors turned farmer or engineers turned managers pero okay lang so long as they are contented.

Job mismatch here in the Phil.? ;D >:(

I guess all of us know what all of us want to say.

And all who posted their opinions here.

Whether we like it or not, some Filipinos especially those wanting jobs abroad are generally are overqualified for their current jobs.

Even those working here in the country, some have to contend themselves taking lowly jobs, or theyll stew thier diplomas for lunch.

That is a mismatch, plain and simple.

Another contention i see here is that workers, and i beg to refer to another thread, need more training because right now, a bar exam taker would often flunk because he could not put the right article (pun intended). That's law. How are our teachers?

We cant blame them because their curriculum, tehir syllabus, their professors, their teachers and their environment do not provide them what they need.

So here i am, with a carabao english and a gold rimmed diploma tapping on an outdated PC with pirated OS.

This to me is a mismatch too.

The study conducted by an independent group contracted by the International Labor Organization claims that job mismatch is one of the reasons of unemployment and underemployment.

They did not claim that this is the only reason, but a big contributing factor.

It is a sad fact, that some of our doctors want to work in the states as nurses, lawyers as cleaners, degree holders as domestic helpers.  There is a job mismatch but there is no unemployment and there is a relatively high income opportunity. Sad, but the first level of Maslows heirarchy of needs is physical survival.

My only point is simple.  If the Philippine Regulatory Commission, the CHED, the DepEd, had only been keen on regulating professions not over producing nurses, directing students on their appropriate propensity, improved the educational system, there would have been no problem on job mismatch.

Do we imagine how many unemployed nursing grads in the Philippines because there is overproduction?

There must be a balance of professions in the labor market.  We should think of a long term solution and avoid going on trends.

The demand for IT positions and medical professions will stay for a longer period. But we have to be careful on not over producing them.

College Entrance Exams- NCEE or NSAT will be useful.  This is a way to see the inclinations of a student.

There is also a need to reinforce highschool and elementary education.  I am a teacher at the university and I have personally noticed first year students who are not yet mentally ready for university education.

Enad's response ...

so you mean first year college are not mentally prepared for university or college, this is a joke...

Your words, Ayessa, could be taken as too sweeping a statement, which could mean, "All first year students in the university have no mental readiness to pursue university education."

Don't you think anyone who can read this, like some of those coming from the university you're mentoring, would not take your words as a joke?

It would might as well be helpful to integrate foreign languages as an elective.  This is of course expensive because there are only few foreign language teachers in the Philippines but this would give us a very good advantage.

Colliers,

I was not taking it in a general sense, this was based on my experience as a college lecturer.

your statement based on your lecturing only should not be in general, therefore. you should change you words or be ready being corrected or misinterpreted and don't get tempers when someone picked up what you were posting.

Doy,

uwaw kung ako mosulti, kay arrogante ta may ra bag wa pod "mangayo" og hinabang. you can read your own posts how you indirectly demean people in the guise of your argument or correcting their own choice of words.

your statement based on your lecturing only should not be in general, therefore. you should change you words or be ready being corrected or misinterpreted and don't get tempers when someone picked up what you were posting.

Why corrected when I am only pointing a personal experience?  I was telling a personal experience. So meaning, they should make an experience for me? huh`?

I am a teacher at the university and I have personally noticed first year students who are not yet mentally ready for university education.

Ayess, how would I read that? wa ka motumbok og tibook estudyante ana sa bisan usa ka university lang?

Unsay boot pasabot nimo ug personal diay?

see, imong personal laman diay na, nya, ipahid nimo sa tanang estudyante nga first year? a personal observation with a general conclusion...hahaha.

sige ko basa imong post sa ubnang threads, ayessa...di man ka paalkansi bisag simple nga argumento imo mang dak-on, sama ka-dako sa imong ulo.

i think you're just trying to showboat your being intellectual, but you show your true colors in treating people. reflect, day o doy or both (kay wa ko kaila nimo) how to nurture friendship in a forum as good as TB. mura ra pog kag si kuan diri...kalog siya, arrogante ka...same.

Are you sure that majority of the Filipino first year college students are capable of a collegiate English listening and reading comprehension and writing proficiency?

we may not know much about english, as stated above, but we know what we are.
for ayessa, you maybe full of adjectives - beauty and brain, scholar, teacher, or what have you, pero that doesnt give you the right to make lait for anyone dinhe nga thread, na gusto pa unta mosulod, pero basin ma correctionan na nuon.
anyway, dont take it personally.  you could have done it in a mild manner, kay wala untay ni react, pero kay naa man !?
ako lang ni, so if ma correctionan pod ko,  fine. dili na ko matingala.

Preha ra gud na ni Sushime nga nag ingon nga HAMBUGERA BITCH  daw ko agi sa akong comment... there's no point arguing with people who always think they are the underdog. Himuon jud kang dautan, no matter what.

kanang mga crabs are mostly mauy di jud mo uswag, honest! Not too many people liked me back home agi sa akong ka straightforward, i have to and they have to know my personality, take-it-or-leave it! But many people here likes me for my honesty.

i cant argue our people back home kay lahi-on jud na nila ug sabut and i cant go down to their level, sorry peeps but i mean this with all my heart.
