Forum on Marine Science in the Philippines

A Forum on Philippine Marine Science, organized by the U.P. Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) with support from the DOST Technology Application and Promotion Institute, and the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation, will be held on Monday, 26 January 2009 at the UP-MSI in Diliman, Quezon City . The highlight of the Forum will be the presence of the country’s most distinguished senior marine scientists – Drs. Angel Alcala, Edgardo Gomez, and Paciencia Milan. It will start with a series of 15-minute talks by the senior marine scientists – their aspirations for the discipline as a whole, marine science education, and scientists. This will be followed by 5-minute responses from a panel of junior marine scientists (Drs. Wilfredo Campos, Marie Antonette J. Meñez, Cesar Luna, and Fernando Siringan). Then another series of questions will be asked of the seniors, followed by questions, comments from the floor and via email and text/Skype messages.

The tentative program is as follows:

The target audience will be marine science, environmental science and biology researchers, graduate students, practitioners and policymakers. The Forum will be webcast live and make use of video conferencing facilities of UP Diliman and other U.P. campuses (e.g. UP-Visayas in Iloilo and Cebu, UP-Mindanao) to allow audiences in remote locations the opportunity to interact with forum speakers.  Other remote audiences can go to the website of the UP Department of Interactive Learning --  http://dilc. upd.edu.ph/.

Jurgenne H. Primavera

Jurgenne H. Primavera, senior scientist of the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center based in Iloilo, central Philippines, for more than two decades has been a tireless champion of replacing unsustainable aquaculture practices with sustainable ones. In her early research career, in the 1970s, her studies of the early phases of the shrimp life cycle contributed to aquaculture know-how and practice, enabling this food-producing strategy to flourish in the world's mangrove areas, including some in her own country. As she learned first-hand about the environmental and socioeconomic perils that poorly managed and overextended aquaculture can bring, she began to investigate and develop mangrove-friendly aquafarming methods in order to move toward a sustainable industry that provides food and jobs while also preserving the environment. Trained in zoology and marine science, Primavera has published and lectured extensively on aquaculture and mangrove issues. Among her numerous awards and honors are her induction as a foreign member into the Swedish Royal Academy of Agriculture and Forestry and an honorary doctoral degree from Stockholm University. Earlier this year, she was chosen as a Pew Fellow in that organization's program in marine conservation.
