Forum on Marine Science in the Philippines
A Forum on Philippine Marine Science, organized by the U.P. Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) with support from the DOST Technology Application and Promotion Institute, and the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation, will be held on Monday, 26 January 2009 at the UP-MSI in Diliman, Quezon City . The highlight of the Forum will be the presence of the country’s most distinguished senior marine scientists – Drs. Angel Alcala, Edgardo Gomez, and Paciencia Milan. It will start with a series of 15-minute talks by the senior marine scientists – their aspirations for the discipline as a whole, marine science education, and scientists. This will be followed by 5-minute responses from a panel of junior marine scientists (Drs. Wilfredo Campos, Marie Antonette J. Meñez, Cesar Luna, and Fernando Siringan). Then another series of questions will be asked of the seniors, followed by questions, comments from the floor and via email and text/Skype messages.
The tentative program is as follows:
0830-0900 am – Registration
0900-0930 am – Welcome, Dr. Maria Lourdes McGlone, MSI Director

0930-1030 am – Seniors: 1st round (15 min each)
1030-1100 am – Panel Response (10 min each)
1100-1200 am - Questions to Seniors from panelists, audience
1200-1300 pm – Lunch

1430-1600 pm - Group photo

The target audience will be marine science, environmental science and biology researchers, graduate students, practitioners and policymakers. The Forum will be webcast live and make use of video conferencing facilities of UP Diliman and other U.P. campuses (e.g. UP-Visayas in Iloilo and Cebu, UP-Mindanao) to allow audiences in remote locations the opportunity to interact with forum speakers.
