Remembering Davao del Sur inauguration 42 years ago
June 24, 2009 9:22 am
By Satur P. Apoyon

DAVAO CITY, June l8 -– When Davao del Sur, one of three Davao provinces that resulted in the split of the then gigantic lone Davao Province effective July l, l967, inaugurated its autonomy on July 2, a day after the mandated commencement of operation of the Sarmiento House bill, I was there to cover the event in its capital, Digos.

As early as 7 a.m. on that historic day, I trekked to the Magsaysay elementary school auditorium at the back of then old municipal building of the future Digos City to capture the atmosphere and fervor of the unfolding event that will christen the new province for south Davao.

I covered the occasion on official invitation of newly appointed provincial Press Secretary Rogelio J. Flaviano in my capacity as one of the few pioneering community editors in Digos.

After a brief stint with Southern Times of the late Tranquilino dela Cruz, I had just put up Southern Observer, a second weekly tabloid in the provincial capital some 60 kms south of Davao City.

Among the three Nacionalista Party provincial board members in the mother province, Ramon delos Cientos was appointed by Gov. Vicente G. Duterte as new governor of Davao del Sur.

Board Member Verulo Boiser, a veteran ABS radio announcer before joining politics, was designated as appointive governor of Davao del Norte and Board Member Paciano Bangoy who proudly proclaimed as son of the NP founder in Davao to the eastcoast province of Davao Oriental.

Congressman Lorenzo S. Sarmiento, civil engineer turned politician but suffered an initial loss in his entry into the three-cornered gubernatorial battle in the lone Davao province in November l963 against the incumbent reelectionist Vicente G. Duterte and a co-challenger logger lawyer Constancio Maglana, authored the House Bill for the division of the then mammoth province.

In the division, Davao City, a chartered city in the Philippine Commonwealth created in October l936 and inaugurated on March l, l937, however, has remained distinct and autonomous political instrumentality from the new provinces and the subsequent additional province of Compostela Valley, a slice off of Davao del Norte in January l998.

The three incumbent provincial executives who will lead their respective constituencies come July l, 2009 in the foundation anniversary literary programs are Governors Douglas R. Cagas, Davao del Sur; Rodolfo P. del Rosario, Davao del Norte; and Corazon N. Malanyaon, Davao Oriental.

Now 42 years after, Davao del Sur by the seam of Davao Gulf and under the canopy of the l0,3l0-foot Mount Apo along the border with North Cotabato and Davao City has moved forward with progress by leaps and bounds along with its two sister provinces and the daughter province of Davao del Norte — Compostela Valley.

Davao del Norte may have exportable Cavendish bananas and Davao Oriental with its nickel and other minerals, Davao del Sur has sugar central in Hagonoy town and beer brewery and dessicated coconut plant in Darong and Coronon, Santa Cruz as economic buffer. Lately, the old Malalag Bay in Malalag town has contributed additional taxes for the government as a mooring hub of more than a dozen cargo vessels affected by the global recession.

In this year’s commemoration of Davao del Sur foundation day, however, I won’t be there anymore personally to savor once more the merrymakings of the people, majority of whom are Cebuanos and sprinkles of Boholanos, Ilocanos and Ilonggos.

But in my Davao City suburban place of abode I still keep a memento of that inaugural event — the cute two and one half by two inch laminated pass! (PNA)

Padigosan Festival in Digos

July 19 | Digos City, Davao del Sur

Padigosan is a festival in Digos featuring activities like lechon parade, street dancing, trade fair, and sports competition. The celebration commemorates the founding of Digos into a municipality back in July 19, 1949.

The name of the festival is derived from the term padigos, which means "to take a bath". Moreover, the city name Digos also has the same origin. The use of such a term dates back to a story of a settler having a short conversation with a native. The settler asked the native "What is this the name of this place?". Having thought that the settler asked "Where are you going?", the native answered "padigos" - which meant that he was about to take a bath in the river. With the native's reply, the settler thought that the name of the place was Padigos. Later, the name evolved to Digos.

This was published in March 2009 issue of Manila Bulletin Agriculture Magazine.

The Booming Mango Industry of San Roque, Digos City

                                                     by fdaray

San Roque is a remote barangay in Digos City. Corn was the staple, food in this town in the 1940s, and then in 1970, some farmers started to plant sugarcane as their main crop. But since the price of sugar fluctuated, they shifted to mango production, which has been booming up to now due to the high demand of both export and local markets.

About 75 percent of the mangoes produced in Digos City came from San Roque, hence it is dubbed as the “mango country of Digos City.” More and more farmers are venturing in mango growing because they earn twice of their income from sugarcane. I am one of them. Like my neighbors, I planted my 2-hectare lot to grafted “Mango Cebu”, a sweet and juicy variety.

But the first farmer in San Roque who has succeeded in mango production is Arnold Nebria. He started as a tenant, and with his net profit, he bought agricultural lands and planted these to mangoes. Today, he grosses an average of P1 million every harvest. Another successful farmer is Victoriano Ramos. In September 2008, this 70-year-old farmer and councilman of San Roque has earned almost a million pesos from mangoes.

That’s how profitable mango growing could be. Yet, a capital of P80,000 is needed to start a 1-hectare mango farm, and the harvest, of course, depends on how well the production has gone through.

Regarding production, it is ideal to spray for flowering when the leaves of the latest buds matured. The buds usually mature after nine months. Spraying can be done earlier if the chemicals used are for hastening the maturity of the leaves. Insecticides and fungicides are sprayed at the same time since most of these are compatible with the fertilizer.

To control sucking insects, wrap the fruits with newspapers at 65-70 days. The fruits are ready for harvest after 105-110 days from the first day of spraying for flowering.

Based on my sampling, a 10-year-old mango tree will bear an average of 500 kilos of fruits. So in 1 ha with an average of 70 trees, 35,000 kilos of mangoes could be harvested. If a kilo sells at P20, a gross income of P700,000 could be earned from 1 ha in one harvest or P1.4 million in a year.

The fruits also undergo quality control. The biggest fruits without spots and rusts are mark as, first class and are exported to Hong Kong and China. Second class fruits or those which are of medium size are shipped to Manila, while the third class are sold in the local market.

The biggest problem in mango production, however, is successive and excessive rain during pollination stage. Pollen grains are washed out and thus, few fruits are developed. At this point, the price of mango drops to as low as P10 if there is no export. Farmers can only break even if the price is at least P15 per kilo, but that, of course, still depends on the supply and demand.

On the other hand, this shouldn’t discourage farmers from venturing in mango production. Remember, says Benito Ayop, another successful mango producer in San Roque, “Farming is like gambling. Although you spend and work hard, sometimes you win or lose. Don’t stop and think positive that you will recover next harvest.”

I will try emageshack...

mountain climbers take a  rest , then proceed almost nearing the tip of Mt. Apo.

At Marawer, Mt. Apo is only visible from 6  to 7 am. After that ,fogs will cover .

Mt. Apo  overlooking the  wide-green banana plantation.

The crater is like a burning flame as seen  in the early morning.

ARI MO SA DAVAO CITY, TAN-AW MO SA KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL

Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival

home zip codes area codes philippine map festivals philippine news philippine flag philippine travel

It is a celebration of Good Harvest! This globally famous festival is a weeklong celebration and thanksgiving for nature’s bountiful harvest. Kadayawan Festival is being celebrated every 3rd Week of August. A celebration of the plentiful harvests of fruits and orchids during the season. Kadayawan is derived from the prehistoric word “madayaw,” a warm and friendly greeting also used to explain a thing that is valuable, superior, beautiful, good, or profitable, “Kadayawan” in Mandaya means anything that brings fortune, a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. Ethnic tribes around Mt. Apo usually gathered during the harvest-time when they had a bountiful harvest to give thanks to their gods particularly the all-powerful Bathala (supreme God). According to legend, the occasion is noticeable by happiness, singing, and dancing, as well as offerings to their divine protectors.

T he festival is celebrated in the month of August with floats of fresh flowers and fruits, and indak-indak sa kadalanan or street dancing in colorful costumes. A variety of tribes parade the streets with their tribal costumes and jewelry. The city of Davao comes alive every year in August when it holds it yearly harvest festival. The streets are adorned with local fruit & vegetables while people hold street dances with abandon for four days. The harbour is the venue for native & power boat races. Everybody fights for seats to watch the Horse Fighting wherein stallions fight each other over the rights to mate with a mare. The crowd is sometimes tracked by the horses if they get too close. The last day the street is full of costumed dancers dancing to the local beat & decorated floats with glamorous Mindanao girls as eye candy. It's a time of fun & abandon. The festivity is not complete without the Bya'Neng ng Kadayawan or the Miss Kadayawan beauty contest. There is also the horsefight, a tribal animal show similar to the bullfight in Spain.

History

The festival began from a government-initiated program called “Unlad Proyekto Davao” in 1986, planned to unite the Davaoeños after the chaotic martial law years and to showcase the city as a peaceful and colorful place to visit and do business in. At the time, it was called “Apo Duwaling,”a name created from the icons Davao was famous for: Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak; durian, the king of fruits; and waling-waling. The queen of orchids. Davao is also home of the majestic Philippine eagle, the national bird. In 1988, the festival was renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to celebrate the city's unique wealth in flowers, fruits, and ethnic culture.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, the mother of may other festivals in the region as it honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city.

“Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain supreme. Be part of the experience.

“Du-aw na sa Dabaw! Duyog sa Kadayawan! Maglingaw-lingaw ta!”

Brief History of Digos
In the early days, Digos was watercourse meeting place of inhabitants belonging to the Indonesian-Malay tribes settled along the southern foothills of Mt. Apo. The Digos River meets the Davao Gulf and is ideal for fishing and bathing.

During the Spanish era, a group of natives carrying bows and arrows were approached by some Spaniards traversing the very fertile tracks of land in Davao. One Lopez Jaena Pacheco, a conquistador during the administration of Governor Claveria serving as the head of the group, inquired about the name of the place from the barefooted natives. Believing that the Spaniards were asking where they were bound to, the natives answered: “padigos” which means “to take a bath”. Since then the place was identified as Digos.

The “9th Araw ng Digos City” is week long celebration of its cityhood with this years theme: “Kalamboan, Kalambigitan sa Tanan,“ 2009. This year the celebration is much more organized and there are more activities planned than the past years. Sept 8, 2009  there was a civic parade. One of the highlights of the Araw ng Digos Celebration is the “Lechonan Sa Kadalanan“! As the sun sets, start the Hudyaka sa Kadalanan, "sayaw sa tanan," along Rizal Avenue. THe weeklong celebration ended with a showdown of fireworks in front of the City Hall , 11:00 pm.

Mahusay at mabait siyang guro.

                                                                 The Acasia Tree
                                                                   by fdaray

Acacia) is a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to    the  subfamily Mimosoideae of the family Fabaceae, first described in Africa by the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus in 1773. The plants tend to be thorny and pod-bearing. The name derives from ακις (akis) which is Greek for a sharp point, due to the thorns in the type-species Acacia nilotica ("Nile Acacia")     from Egypt. [1]Acacias are also known as thorntrees or wattles, including the yellow-fever acacia and umbrella acacias.

This acacia tree is a unique feature of Aplaya Elementary School. It is dubbed as the oldest and biggest tree in Digos City.  Its circumference is 5.28 meters or 1.68 meters in diameter. The main and small branches spread and bowed lowly that gives a circular shade. People believed that this tree is more than one and a half century old. Mrs. Felicicima Longo, the second teacher assigned in 1956 said,” this tree was already big I arrived here. Pupil used to play under the shade during noon time. Without my notice, they climbed and played hide and seek on its long leafy branches.”

Many stories were told about the acasia tree. The cutting of the tree was set aside after the construction of the building because the shade was their resting place. After the construction of the pre-fabricated school building in 1966, people living near the school saw sparkling lights on its branches and heard strumming of guitar. “It became the home of ‘engcantos, “said the folks. Mr. Tamiji, the school principal in 1990 commanded a child to cut the branches touching the roof. After cutting the branches, he suffered pain in his right arm. From that time on, nobody dared to cut the tree. Mrs. Abiera, a Grade II teacher was surprised why his pupils kept on looking at one of the big branch. She asked the child, “what are you looking up in the acasia tree?” The child answered, “my classmate is still up in the   tree. “Where……?” the teacher asked. But they could not see any child. However, a certain principal planned to cut the tree. He first sought a woodcutter. But before it was cut, he asked permissions to the engcantos. He tacked an ax on the trunk and left overnight. It was found that the ax fell down. Thus, it was a bad phenomenon.  The tree do not like to be cut. From that time on, the tree was left untouched even cutting the small branches. A certain David Bedico , a resident of this barangay go near to the tree and   recite his ‘oracion’ asking  the engcantos to heal  his sick relatives.   Lately this year, a certain woman removed the thick dried bark and used for firewood. Few days latter, she suffered abdominal pain and latter died. There were, many awesome stories  about the acasia tree. Yet, some were untold.

The ‘engcantos’ are parts of God perfect creation. In Col. 1:16, said
“6For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” The invisible things mentioned are the world of the “the spirits, the engcantos.”

Despite of its fallen leaves that decayed and caused damaged to the nearby roofs, MR. Erlito Damo,  the principal now, never plan to cut the tree, instead he says, “ Leave it.  It’s a living legacy of barangay Aplaya. The tree serves the habitat of many small birds.  Moreover, it helps balance our ecosystem. “

But now, it is regarded by the teachers as a friendly tree because it gives chilly-wide shade to the pupils to play during noontime. It never happened that it hurts anybody because broken dried branches fell down during night time.

Hence, this acasia tree is a landmark and identity of Aplaya Elementary School, the biggest barrio school, the home of the oldest and biggest tree in Digos City.

                                                                 The Acasia Tree
