[edit] History
In the early days, Digos was a watercourse, a meeting place of inhabitants belonging to the Austronesians settled along the southern foothills of Mt. Apo. The Digos River meets the Davao Gulf and it is ideal for fishing and bathing.

During the Spanish Era, a group of natives carrying bows and arrows were approached by some Spaniards traversing the very fertile tracks of land in Davao. One Lopez Jaena Pacheco, a conquistador during the administration of Governor Claveria serving as the head of the group, inquired about the name of the place from the barefooted natives. Believing that the Spaniards were asking where they were bound to, the natives answered "Padigos", which means "to take a bathe". Since then the place was identified as Digos.

As a portion of the "food bowl" of the province of Davao del Sur, otherwise known as the Padada Valley, Digos lured many migrants, majority of whom came from the Visayas and Ilocos regions to settle permanently in the area. Before World War II, an enterprising American by the name of N.E. Crumb leased 10.24 km² and transformed the place into an Abaca Plantation. This became the hub of economic activity in the locality during those days.

Digos was occupied by the Japanese troops in 1942.

In 1945, through the brave efforts of the combined forces of the Philippine Army, the local guerilla units from the Davao peninsula, and the United States military, the Japanese soldiers were defeated.

Through the initiation of then Congressman Apolinario Cabigon, Digos, became a regular municipality in 1949 by virtue of Presidential Executive Order No. 236, dated July 19, 1949 issued by President Quirino. Its Coverage included the barrios of Tres de Mayo, Goma Bansalan, Matanao, Darapuay and the Poblacion where the seat of government was located. Before its creation into a municipality, Digos was a barrio of Sta. cruz, a town 16 kilometers away. On 19 July 1949, the town was formally inaugurated with Benito Rabor appointed as Mayor.

Digos in later years, before its conversion into a city, was regarded as the capital town of the Province of Davao del Sur, long before it gained the status of a First Class Municipality in 1993, being center for trade, commerce and education, accruing to its strategic location at the cross point of two principal thoroughfares in the south.

In July 1998, the bid to convert into a city was moved and initiated by Hon. Mayor Arsenio A. Latasa, considering its very satisfactory qualificationas required for in R.A. 7160

House Bill No. 5672 dated November 24, 1998 of Congress authored by Hon. Congressman Douglas Ra. Cagas, led to the drafting of Republic Act 8798, converting the Municipality of Digos into a component City of Davao del Sur, which was signed by President Joseph E. Estrada on July 14, 2000 and ratified by the Digoseños on September 8, 2000.

DS Gomez’ initiatives make Digos City topnotcher       PDF        Print        E-mail
     Sample Image

"You can't answer if you can't read."

With that, Digos City Schools Division Superintendent Alfonso G. Gomez, Jr. stressed the importance of reading as he patterned his interventions after the United States' Department of Education focusing on effective reading programs.

In the 2006-2007 National Achievement Test (NAT), Digos City ranked 4th among the 186 divisions nationwide with a mean percentage score (MPS) of 79.38.  The divisions nationwide were divided to clusters according to the number of takers.  Digos City was placed to Cluster III with almost 3,000 takers where they ranked 2nd place.

Digos City has been a consistent topnotcher of the Regional Achievement Test (RAT).  The results can be attributed to SDS Gomez who initiated, organized, and worked for the improvement of effective reading programs such as the implementation of the Breaking the Reading Code Tutorial Program where the focal emphases are on phonics, word recognition, fluency, spelling and writing, and word recognition.

SDS Gomez made some interventions to improve the performance and learning of the students.  He has initiated the use of electronic matrix where a group of writers made hyperlink activity sheets to be performed by the students in a daily basis and lesson exemplars for teachers to be enhanced while doing the activities.

He also organized a social educational intervention where smart parents help train non-readers.  This is a collaborative effort between the students and the parents where reading is prioritized.

SDS Gomez believes that the learning of Grades I-III students should be focused on learning to read because this is where we establish inputs to students.  Grades IV-VI students are now reading to learn because they have all the data with them.

This is also one of the reasons why SDS Gomez suggests for a reconstruction of the Phil-IRI program where some of the Grades I-III students fall to non-reader category.  "Let us make them recognize the words first before we expect them to understand.  If they can't read, they can't answer," as stressed by SDS Gomez.

The students, however, are trained more as they move to another level because of their exposure on the activity sheets which converges all the learning areas.

Mathematics has the highest MPS of 83.83 among all the subject areas. SDS Gomez said they had adopted new ways of solving a mathematical problem through the 3Rs - determining what is requested, what is the appropriate response, and what is the result.

SDS Gomez' intention is towards independent learning among students as he said, "My concern is to raise the bar of standard as we face global competitiveness.  It is now learning how to learn."

SDS Gomez was awarded in Malacañang on September 11, 2007. (GEM)

Mabuhay, Digos City, Sept. 8, 2008 the founding anniversary of  the city.

The weeklong celebration started last Sept.2 with DepEd night headed
by City Schools Division Superintendent, Alfonso G. Gomez,  Jr. CSO V.
It showcased folk dances, song, modern dances participated by private

The culminating day, Sept. 8  was so colorful with civic parade .  The

president Erap  Estrada as guest speaker.

"Lechonan sa Kadalanan" highlighted the weeklong activities. The streets

and delicious lechon, it was sold to the public  at very  affordable price.
Lechonan sa Kadalanan is the ussual festival of Digos City of its founding
anniversary celebration yearly.

The  overall chairprson of this years weeklong celebration  was no other
than our dedicatd ,hardworking and dynamic mayor, the framer of the city
Hon. Arsenio A. Latasa.

Hopefully and successfully, the weeklong celebration ended  without any
untoward incidents despite treats of terrorism.

                   The Acasia Tree
                      by fdaray

This acasia tree is a unique feature of Aplaya Elementary School. It is
regarded  the oldest and the biggest tree in Digos City. Its circumference
is 5.28 meters or 2.58 metrs in diameter. The main and small branches spread
and bowed lowly that gives a circlular shade. People believed that this tree
is more than one and a half century old.
Many stories were told about the acasia tree. After the construction of
the fre-fabricatd school building in 1966, people living near the school saw
sprakling lights on its branches and heard strumming of guitar. It became the
home of engcantos . From that time on, nobody dared to cut the tree. In 1975
the newly assigned principal planned to cut the tree. The woodcutter asked
first a permission to the engcantos. He   tacked an ax on the trunk and left
overnight. It was  obsreved that the ax fell down. It was a bad phenomenon.
The tree do not lik to be cut. From that time on , the tree was left untoched
even cutting the small branches. A certain womam removed the thick dried
bark and use for firewood.Few days latter, she suffered abdominal pain
and latter died.
It is now regarded by the teachers as friendly tree because it gives
chilly wide shade to the pupils to play during noontime. It never happened
that it hurt anybody because broken dried branches fell down during night
time.
This acasia tree is a landmark and identity of Aplaya Elemntary School,
the biggest barrio school, the home of the oldest tree in Digos City.

i've been to digos a few times and it strikes me as a dusty city. it is okay to roam the streets after a rain. but summertime can be the worst time to be there.

grazie: this place in katapatagan (which is located in a hilly part of digos city) is where you will find the longest zip line in the whole philippines at almost 400 meters long and approximately 150 meters high. the temperature there is similar to that of baguio and it can get foggy at times even during the daytime. they do have a cable lift (which some people call a cable car) that can accommodate a few people at a time. i don't know how much they charge for the cable lift but they charge Php 300 if you ride the zip line. this place is called Camp Sabros, and is owned and operated by four brothers whose name is sablan, hence sabros, for sablan brothers.

Zipped at Camp Sabros
By Jojie Alcantara

CAMP Sabros is found up in the cool highlands of Kapatagan in Digos City, Davao del Sur, an almost two-hour ride from Davao City.

Before the place became the buzzword nowadays, Rhonson used to hang out in the resthouse owned by the Sacdalans, when invited by his good friend Edwin Sacdalan who is also a mountaineer. The name Sabros is from a coined word meaning Sacdalan Brothers.

Post here your Valentine's Day greetings

Now why a buzzword? Because it took around 5-6 months after Edwin envisioned a dream over their land and put up the longest zip line in the country.

On December 25, the Zip Line was launched and became a favorite attraction to a growing number of enthusiasts all over the island. Edwin did not expect the surge of visitors to the camp weekly since then.

Rhonson and I went up there one early rainy morning for an engagement shoot (or you may call it pre-nuptial) with our good friend Epong Soliban and fianc‚e Aya (a flight stewardess based in Korea).

It was so cold when we got there, because Kapatagan is on a 3,980 feet elevation. The fog has descended over the area. What started as a normal pictorial turned into an extreme prenuptial session similar to what he did at the top of Mount Apo.

Epong and Aya wanted to try the zip line. Rhon wanted to shoot them zipping off together at close range. So how was that possible? He had himself harnessed backwards to be able to shoot the couple in front.

The zip line was 380 meters long, affording a good view of Mount Apo's peak, and the rows of pine trees jutting out like toys from below at a height of 180ft. It was an unbelievable sight, and therapy for those with fear of heights, if they dare.

As the backup photographer (and feeling giddy at that moment), I had to climb the cable car, which positioned itself in the middle of the long cable, while I waited for Rhon and the couple to zip by from another end. I had to shoot them with my zoom lens in such a shaky situation.

When they finally flew by with their gleeful screams, the sight was like a fantasy movie out of Superman, without capes.

Not long after that, Rhon went flying again solo and not backwards this time. I followed next. The experience of flying alone for less than 60 seconds of pure, adrenalin-pumping, blood-racing flight over pine trees was beyond description.

It felt so good. And unlike other short zip lines, which make your heart stop because of its frightening speed, this zip line makes you SOAR. In such a cruising mode, you get the chance to admire the Mount Apo peak at close range.

I swear I was living in my Darna moment. There was no screaming, just openmouthed amazement at the panorama around me.

Edwin was his usual hospitable self and gave us a hefty breakfast. Though they are still considering putting up additional amenities like food, the package rate for now is P300 per head for the zip line.

Accommodations are still being prepared, as cottages will be added in the future. For now, he offers his own log cabins for guests who wish to stay overnight and brace themselves for a chilly evening.

In the mornings, though, the sight of Mount Apo on a clear sky will leave you breathless, more so when you view it from the cable car suspended midway in the forest. For inquiries and reservations, call Edwin at 09208750015. (email [email protected] or visit her website www.witerary.com)

The System: The AMA Data Center

The corporate AMA Data Center is the heart of AMA’s information and communication network. Equipped with the latest and state-of-the-art I.T. resources, it provides connectivity and information to AMA’s 200 campuses. The establishment of the Center is focused on the efficient, fast and effective delivery of I.T. services to AMA’s students, faculty and staff.
AMA has envisioned the expansion of its reach through the effective use of information technology and the Center is viewed as a strategic necessity to realize the objectives of AMA Computer University- being the first and largest IT educational institution in Asia.

The AMA Data Center maintains a significant number of computer servers, routers and switches. Through the facilities of the Center, an array of IT services – from hosting of corporate applications and systems to information exchange - are delivered to its end-users. It has, in its arsenal, a computing platform that supports almost all of the IT requirements of AMA.

Funneled into the Center is a DS3 (45Mbps) stream of bandwidth provided through the facilities of DigitelOne. The capacity is more than sufficient to distribute internet services to AMA’s computer terminals, information kiosks and network devices. Through the Center, the management and maintenance of AMA’s Wide Area Network (WAN) is observed consistently for 24 hours, 7 days a week. It is from here that local connectivity services are provided by AMA’s telecommunications partners – Bayantel, Digitel and PT&T. The frame-relay network infrastructure terminates at the Center and this makes the Center the heart of AMA WAN.

The Center is being maintained by a team of system administrators, network and computer engineers and technical support staff. The strength of the Center is enhanced through the innovative and creative work of its maintenance team. Through trainings and certifications, the Center’s personnel are endlessly ushered into fresher and newer fields of data center management and maintenance.

The AMA Data Center is strategically housed in the corporate office of AMA located at Panay Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City. In the next coming years, the Center is expected to increase its computing power and provide the IT requirements of the expanding organization. It will relentlessly continue to adopt technologies that are new, emerging, and cutting-edge.

This is an imperative that the Center will pursue and with the surge of new market opportunities, the Center will not stop to upgrade its infrastructure to cover the challenges of the growing organization like AMA.

Mango Farm of E/fdaray  at San Roque, Digos City

The MANGO  COUNTRY OF DIGOS CITY

                                                             by: fdaray

San Roque is a remote barangay that ranges hilly, flat and slightly
rolling with silty loam soil. It has 438 hectares more or less or 1.53%
of the total area of Digos City.

The main source of livelihood is farming. The early settlers in 1940's
planted corn as their main staple food. In 1970, some farmers planted
sugar cane.  Because of the rise and fall on the price of sugar, some
farmers planted grafted mangoes in 1982. Ten years after, mango
production started to boom because of the great demand for exports
and for local markets. The farmers got high profit that even doubled
compared to sugar production. With my neighboring farmers, I planted
my two hectare lot with grafted magoes. Using the modern technology
of farming, we started inducing the plants to bear flowers at 8 years
old. Mango fruit production became the main source of livehood. Sugar
cane farms were intercropped with grafted mangoes.Years latter, more
and more farmers planted grafted mangoes. Based on my survey in 2005,
100% of the total land area of San Roque was fully planted with grafted
mangoes, the sweet and juicy variety 'mango cebu'. 70% of the mango
fruits produced in Digos City came from San Roque. With an average of
70 mango plants per hectare, approximately  there would be 30,660
mango trees growing aside  from the centennial  mangoes and other
varities that  were planted long before.

Thus, San Roque is regarded the "mango country of Digos City". It
becomes  now, a man-made forest of vast green  mango trees.

[edit] Description

Mango flowers
Reole mangoes from Venezuela ("bocao" variety) with a pear to compare sizesMango trees (Mangifera indica) reach 35-40 m in height, with a crown radius of 10 m. The leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, 15-35 cm long and 6-16 cm broad; when the leaves are young they are orange-pink, rapidly changing to a dark glossy red, then dark green as they mature. The flowers are produced in terminal panicles 10-40 cm long; each flower is small and white with five petals 5-10 mm long, with a mild sweet odor suggestive of lily of the valley. The fruit takes from three to six months to ripen.

Riped Banganpalli mangoes from Guntur, IndiaThe ripe fruit is variable in size and color, and may be yellow, orange, red or green when ripe, depending on the cultivar. When ripe, the unpeeled fruit gives off a distinctive resinous sweet smell. In its center is a single flat oblong seed that can be fibrous or hairy on the surface, depending on the cultivar. Inside the seed coat 1-2 mm thick is a thin lining covering a single embryo, 4-7 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, and 1 cm thick.

Anthony/Maricar Daray Mango Farm at San Roque, Digos City

This is a one hectare farm planted with grafted mangoes in 1999. After 6 years ,
it started bearing fruits. Using the modern technology of farming, we used chemicals
to hasten the blooming of fruits, fungicides , insecticide and foliar fertilizers. Pests
can be controlled but the number one enemy in mango  production is successive
rain during pollination stage. The pollen grains are washed out and only few are
left to become fruits.
