A comforting presence

He once feared that families would be horrified by the furry grim reaper, especially after Dosa made Oscar famous in a 2007 essay in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Instead, he says many caregivers consider Oscar a comforting presence, and some have praised him in newspaper death notices and eulogies.

"Maybe they're seeing what they want to see," he said, "but what they're seeing is a comfort to them in a real difficult time in their lives."

The nursing home adopted Oscar, a medium-haired cat with a gray-and-brown back and white belly, in 2005 because its staff thinks pets make the Steere House a home.  They play with visiting children and prove a welcome distraction for patients and doctors alike.

After a year, the staff noticed that Oscar would spend his days pacing from room to room.  He sniffed and looked at the patients but rarely spent much time with anyone — except when they had just hours to live.

Oscar's accuracy

He's accurate enough that the staff — including Dosa — know it's time to call family members when Oscar stretches beside their patients, who are generally too ill to notice his presence.  If kept outside the room of a dying patient, he'll scratch at doors and walls, trying to get in.

Nurses once placed Oscar in the bed of a patient they thought gravely ill.  Oscar wouldn't stay put, and the staff thought his streak was broken.  Turns out, the medical professionals were wrong, and the patient rallied for two days.  But in the final hours, Oscar held his bedside vigil without prompting.

Dosa does not explain Oscar scientifically in his book, although he theorizes the cat imitates the nurses who raised him or smells odors given off by dying cells, perhaps like some dogs who scientists say can detect cancer using their sense of scent.

Coping with death

At its heart, Dosa's search is more about how people cope with death than Oscar's purported ability to predict it.  Dosa suffers from inflammatory arthritis, which could render his joints useless.  He worries about losing control of his life in old age, much as his patients have lost theirs.

Parts of his book are fictionalized.  Dosa said several patients are composite characters, though the names and stories of the caregivers he interviews are real and many feel guilty.  Donna Richards told Dosa that she felt guilty for putting her mother in a nursing home.  She felt guilty for not visiting enough.  When caring for her mother, Richards felt guilty about missing her teenage son's swimming meets.

Dosa learns to live for the moment, much like Oscar, who delights in naps and chin scratches or the patient who recovers enough to walk the hall holding the hand of the husband she'll eventually forget.

The doctor advises worried family members to simply be present for their loved ones.

Richards was at her mother's bedside nonstop as she died.  After three days, a nurse persuaded her to go home for a brief rest.  Despite her misgivings, Richards agreed.  Her mother died a short while later.

But she didn't die alone.  Oscar was there.

Animals with Jobs/Oscar the Therapy Cat-2

Oscar has a job as a therapy cat in a nursing home.  He's known as the "cat that predicts death" as he often comforts patients during their final hours.

Oscar's job is in a nursing home in Providence, R.I.  Apparently, Oscar, a tabby and white who was rescued from an animal shelter, has the ability to sense when people are going to die.

As a hospice cat at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oscar works in an end-stage dementia unit and it's inevitable that some of his patients will die.

Britain's Saddest Puppy
(fate is cruel in this case)

Six-month-old puppy Princess has such delicate skin she can't go outside.
While other dogs run free at Britain's Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary,
Princess must gaze through the window. But this canine, otherwise
known as Britain's Saddest Puppy, has become a minor celebrity in the media.

Naked Man Challenges Pamplona Bull
Sunday, July 10, 2011

Daily Mail Flying high: The streaker was tossed up into the air by a young calf during the suelta de vaquillas

KOMPAS.com - He might have been high on adrenaline and low on sleep - but it was no excuse for this naked bull-runner who was detained by police shortly after being thrown into the air by a young calf.

He joined thousands of thrill-seekers to run with the bulls on a crowded fourth day at the San Fermin festival in Pamplona yesterday.  Ten people were injured and no one was gored.

But the now infamous streaker, who was tossed up into the air by a young calf in the bullring after the running, was arrested for causing a 'public disturbance'.  Several runners tripped, fell and were trampled as crowds raced alongside the massive bulls of the famous Miura breeding estate, founded in 1849.

The Sunday run is usually the biggest of the eight that take place annually and is particularly favoured by aficionados because it traditionally features Miuras, renowned as Spain’s largest fighting bulls.

Navarra Hospital reported in a statement that 10 people received treatment for minor injuries including arm and head trauma.  Nine of them - all Spaniards of ages ranging from 19 to 41 years old - were kept in for observation.

The naked bull-runner suffered minor bruising to his face.  Two days ago a 24 year-old Australian tourist was gored in the thigh by a bull, opening an artery, and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Pamplona experts at state television TVE said around 3,500 people had run with the bulls on Sunday. One runner slipped and fell in front of the bunched herd and was trampled near the beginning, a second one tripped close to the halfway point and was seen to be hit by several flying hooves, and a small group jostled each other and hit the cobblestones as the bulls neared the bullring.

The run covers 928 yards (850 meters) from an enclosure just outside Pamplona’s medieval stone wall, where the pedigree animals spend the night, to the downtown bullring where fights known as 'corridas' take place each afternoon of the festival in honor of the city’s patron saint.

Sunday’s run was quick at 2 minutes, 29 seconds and would have finished even sooner but for one straggler that looked around and charged at several herders in the ring before being guided into a corral.

The largest Miura was a black specimen called Macareno that weighed 695 kilograms (1,532 pounds) while the lightest tipped the scales at a mere 540 kilograms (1,190 pounds), the games and spectacles branch of Navarre regional police said in a statement.

Despite the animals’ size and musclebound appearance, experts admire Miuras for their explosive acceleration, stamina and grace, characteristics that inspired legendary Italian car maker the late Ferruccio Lamborghini to name one of his iconic sports cars after the breed.

Animal rights group seeks closure of zoos
By Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) Updated June 07, 2006 12:00 AM

Garbed in black and white "prison suits" and wearing tiger masks, members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a 30-minute protest in front of the Manila Zoo and Botanical Gardens to demand the liberation of caged animals.

The animal rights activists called for the return of the animals to their natural habitat. Their demonstration is part of a worldwide campaign against zoos.

Outside the gates of Manila Zoo along Adriatico street in Malate, the demonstrators lifted banners that read, "Zoos: Cruel Animal Prisons," and demanded the closure of the Manila Zoo.

They chose to hold their demonstration at the 47-year-old Manila Zoo to attract attention. The group plans to hold succeeding protests in other zoos to catch the attention of local government officials.

PETA spokesperson Jamie Alarcon said they are open to the idea of holding a dialogue with Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

In a statement, PETA campaign manager Rochelle Regodon said animals in zoos are "serving a lifetime sentence with no parole."

"Let’s just leave them in the wild and use zoos as sanctuaries for animals rescued from circuses, marine parks and exploitative forms of entertainment."

Alarcon said. "Since our Independence Day is only one week away, we are urging the Philippines to become the first zoo-free country in the region. Since we are the first democracy here in Asia, simulan din natin ang pagpapalaya sa mga hayop."

She added a number of animals brought to zoos were uprooted from their natural surroundings and from their families at a tender age.

PETA distributed copies of their "zoochosis checklist," which encourages zoo visitors to closely observe the behavior of animals.

Questions include the following: Were the animals engaged in biting of bars of the cages; licking or repeatedly licking the bars/walls; pacing or continuous walking back and forth; neck-twisting or unnatural twisting and rolling of the neck; vomiting; circling or walking in circles; coprophagia or playing with and eating excrement; head-bobbing; over-grooming; and self mutilation or repeatedly tail-biting, leg-chewing, head bashing?

Meanwhile, Manila Zoo administrator Romulo Bernardo said over the years, they have been improving conditions and surroundings and that their effort has met international standards for animal dwellings.

"Zoos have an important educational function because by seeing animals, you will better understand them in a way you can’t see in TV or books. Children need to see animals up close in order to appreciate them, and work for their conservation," Bernardo said.

Besides, he said, zoos also serve as a center for unwanted exotic animals such as birds and snakes. "Some of those brought in were injured and might die if they are returned to the wild."

He added that most zoos are centers for captive breeding.

"Most animals are products of captive breeding programs. They lived in the wild, but can’t survive in the wild. Those animals are vanishing because of the loss of habitat," he said.

A dog whipper was a church official charged with removing unruly dogs from a church or church grounds during services. In some areas of Europe during the 16th to 19th centuries it was not uncommon for household dogs to accompany – or at least follow – their owners to church services. If these animals became disruptive it was the job of the dog whipper to remove them from the church, allowing the service to continue in peace. Dog whippers were usually provided with a whip (hence the title) or a pair of large wooden tongs with which to remove the animals. They were generally paid for their services, and records of payments to the local dog whipper exist in old parish account books in many English churches. -- http://listverse.com/

Kitler Can’t Find A Home

Kitten That Resembles Hitler Sits In Shelter

A 6-week old kitten that was found abandoned clinging to the side of a highway in Europe is having a hard time finding a home to adopt him since markings on his face and head bare a resemblance to Nazi leader Hitler’s infamous mustache and hairdo.

According to reports the kitten has been seen by more than 100 potential adopters since arriving at the shelter on July 21 but those who see the kitten (pictured aboved) note the resemblance and walk away.

Staff at the shelter told the Telegraph:

“She is not a specific breed and we don’t know where her black and white patches came from because we have no idea who her parents are.”

Cat Serial Killer Sean Lynde Arrested in Manhattan

Duncan Riley
August 22, 2009

Sean Lynde, a graphic artist and suspected cat serial killer has been arrested in Manhattan, NY.

Police say that Lynde systematically killed at least four of his girlfriend's cats and tortured at least two others over a period of about four months starting in October, 2008.

The feline death toll from Lynde’s cat serial killing spree is as follows:

1. Sean Lynde moved into his girlfriend, Rachael Strate’s Manhattan apartment on October 1 2008.  Three days later her cat was found dead in the laundry room with a mouth full of laundry detergent.  A necropsy (animal autopsy) showed the cat had severe trauma to it’s head from being beaten.

2. Later that same month, another of Lynde’s girlfriend's cats was found to have severe head trauma and had to be put down.

3. The following month, Strate adopted two kittens from an animal shelter but one was returned because he appeared lethargic and had trouble walking.  The second kitten died late in November and Lynde told the Vet the cat had fallen off a table.

4. Strate then adopted two more kittens in mid December.  One of the cats was brought in and treated for a broken paw the same day.  Around Christmas, the second kitten suffered head trauma that resulted in blindness.  The cat passed away a month later in January 2009 from a broken neck.

Lynde’s girlfriend, Rachael Strate, never did suspect that he was the one killing the cats.  It was a an anonymous tip that led to Lynde’s arrest.
