Woman rejected by 7 hospitals dies
« on: October 23, 2008, 03:05:50 AM »
TOKYO—A Japanese woman died after she was turned away by seven Tokyo hospitals in labor and suffering a brain hemorrhage, officials said Wednesday, voicing outrage at the state of the country's medical system.

An ambulance rushed the 36-year-old woman across Tokyo earlier this month as her family doctor tried to get a hospital to accept her, officials said.

But seven hospitals, including general clinics, refused to accept her because they did not have night-duty obstetricians or gynecologists, they said.

She was finally accepted by the Bokuto hospital in Tokyo's eastern Koto ward where she gave birth via a Caesarean section and underwent brain surgery. But she died of cerebral bleeding three days later.

"We are now investigating the case as it is still unknown if her death was caused by the delay in taking action," said a spokesman for the Bokuto hospital.

It was also not clear whether the hospitals were aware that the victim was suffering from a brain hemorrhage when they turned her away.

The Japanese government's spokesman voiced outrage about the case, the latest incident involving a death due to a shortage of hospital care for pregnant women.

"It was extremely regrettable and I think it's a big problem," Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura told a news conference.

"We will pursue the cause of the case and take necessary measures" to prevent similar incidents, Kawamura said.

Japan boasts universal health care but has faced an acute shortage of doctors. Fewer people are entering the medical profession, which has gruelling hours but is not as lucrative in Japan as in many other countries.

Osaka, Japan's second city, last year reported 3,800 cases in which ambulances had to call multiple hospitals to ensure treatment.

In one widely reported case in Osaka, an 89-year-old woman died of a heart attack after her local fire department spent two hours contacting 30 medical facilities to take her in.

Japan's main opposition party, which has been rising in polls, has pledged to boost the number of doctors if it wins upcoming elections.(inquirer.net)

LEAD: Pregnant woman rejected by 7 hospitals, dies after delivery+

TOKYO, Oct. 22 (AP) - (Kyodo)—(EDS: UPDATING, ADDING DETAILS, QUOTE)
A pregnant woman from Tokyo was refused admission by seven healthcare institutions, including a metropolitan hospital with emergency care facilities for expectant mothers and newborns, and died three days after giving birth and undergoing brain hemorrhage surgery at the hospital she was finally accommodated at, metropolitan government officials said Wednesday.

The metropolitan government said it is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 36-year-old woman, especially if there was any mishandling on the part of the metropolitan hospital.

On Oct. 4, the women felt nauseated and visited her maternity doctor at a clinic in Koto Ward. The doctor decided that she needed emergency treatment at a better-equipped institution and arranged a transfer to the Metropolitan Bokutoh Hospital, according to the officials.

But the hospital in neighboring Sumida Ward, equipped with emergency room facilities, declined to accept her that day, a Saturday, on grounds that there was only one obstetrician intern on night duty.

After the woman was rejected by six other hospitals, the clinic again asked Bokutoh Hospital to accept her. This time, the general hospital complied but by then about an hour had passed since it was first contacted.

Bokutoh Hospital, which fetched an off-duty doctor to deal with her delivery, performed a Caesarean section on her as well as surgery for the hemorrhaging in her brain.

The baby was born safe, but the woman died three days after the operation.

Three full-time doctors and three interns work at Bokutoh Hospital as obstetricians, according to the officials. On weekdays, two of them work the night shift, but just one does the night shift on weekends, they say. The woman was transferred there Saturday evening.

"We dealt with the case the best we could with the limited staff. It is a pity that we were unable to save her," an official said.

The shortage of obstetricians, particularly in the countryside, has drawn public attention following a spate of cases where pregnant women died after a number of hospitals refused to take them in.

In August 2006, for example, a pregnant woman in Nara Prefecture fell unconscious during delivery and was to be transferred to a better- equipped hospital, but was rejected by 18 hospitals. She managed to give birth at a 19th hospital but later died.

The latest case has shaken the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, which oversees healthcare, as it occurred in Tokyo, where it is believed that a sufficient number of obstetricians are available.

"We cannot know unless we look into the case thoroughly, but I'm surprised that this happened in Tokyo," a ministry official said.

this is terriable...
sa experience ko dito Ibaraki Japan talagang recomendation ang kailangan khit saan also kapag n transfer ka, from your private maternity clinic to big hospital hindi sila basta-basta magreceive ng patients, so my doktor stop doing his job kasi may problema siya sa health din niya this is happen sa bunso ko but hindi ko pa kabuwanan almost na rin. So he gve me recomendation sa isang private clinic din kaso pagdating nmin reject ako dhil puno na daw nakaingon nga ako "fullbook na" nktwa kming mag-asawa Pero Im not aware this is going -on here Im shock, so bumalik ako sa private doktor ko and he give me again recomendation sa isang Hospital sa Tsuchura, wla namang problema Thank God....and I give birth for my youngest.
here some pictures...

5 days staying in the hospital, after delivery kinabukasan bigyan ka nila ng hairdryer,a sign said " i think it says someones doing a shower" wait for your next kanji kasi.
