Woman Declared Dead, Still Breathing in Morgue
« on: October 09, 2008, 08:30:30 PM »
Judith Johnson went to the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware for what she thought was a bad case of indigestion.

An hour after being admitted, the hospital told Johnson’s husband his wife was dead, Wilmington's News Journal reported Tuesday.

When someone at the morgue noticed Johnson’s “corpse” was still breathing, Louis Johnson learned his wife was very much alive.

The Johnsons are now suing the hospital and medical staff for compensatory and punitive damages.

“She is brain injured, but can walk and talk,” the Johnson’s attorney, Dr. Leon Aussprung told The News Journal.

Judith Johnson, 61, of Georgetown, Del., was actually having a heart attack when she arrived at the hospital in May 2007. Less than 45 minutes after she arrived, she went into cardiac arrest.

She was given "multiple medicines and synchronized shocks," according to emergency room records, which also indicate she was not given supplemental oxygen. The records also say she "never regained a pulse," and was declared dead at 8:34 p.m.

Johnson now suffers from liver damage, chest pain, memory loss, speech problems, and a change in personality, seizures, and permanent neurological injury as a result of the care she received at Beebe Medical Center, according to the lawsuit.

Beebe medical officials did not directly comment on the lawsuit.

“The situation that you described, while rare, is not unheard of,” said Wallace Hudson, Beebe’s vice president of corporate affairs. “It is called spontaneous return of circulation, otherwise known as ‘Lazarus syndrome. Medical literature points out that since 1982, there have been at least 25 reported cases of survival after failed resuscitation.”(the foxnews)

The hospital will be facing a tough battle in this case. I have a strong feeling the patient's family would emerge victorious in the litigation.

It seems like the "Autopsy"  US TV series in which I watched every Wednesday midnight. Mostly it is a schocking crime  report but it fascinates me then. The investigators still able to  solve some  pending cases, arresting those suspects who are still at large after a thorough DNA tests  though  incident occurred for a period of years.

Oh, this is gonna be an easy case for the prosecutors.  It may not be a unique case but  it seems like there was neglect but then again what do I know.  Asa na to si soon-to-be Dodong Lorenzo kay sya'y maka shed light aning ilang ginatawag ug Lazarus syndrome.

I remember when my friend's husband died last month, my friend didn't want him autopsied right away (asked for at least 12 hours) hoping that he will come back to life and would just get up and take a cab to come home.  But he didn't.

“She is brain injured, but can walk and talk,” the Johnson’s attorney, Dr. Leon Aussprung told The News Journal.

Interesting case study.

The patient has little to chance in winning this case against a hospital. Though the patient came back to life; clinically she was declared dead due to the lack of pulse; the attending physician has the power to declare the patient 'dead' if there are no signs of physiological activity. In this particular case they followed all procedures to revive the patient including multiple shocks via defibrillator as well as vasodilative drugs, still no avail.

The spontaneity of her cardiopulmonary system coming back 'online' after these initial resuscitative tries are what intrigues me.

My best answer for this right now is:

a)Vasodilatory drugs increased her blood flow, but the effect was probably prolonged probably due to her size. The woman is probably overweight and thereby prolonging the effects.
b) Perhaps an abboration in her heart to respond to the defibrillator shocks in a prolonged manner

In any effect, the patient should definitely have consulted with her cardiologist in placing a pacemaker to prevent further similar situations from metastasizing. Medically speaking, the physicians and medical staff did what was demanded of them and followed medical procedures to the book.

It is luck for the individual that awoke even before the Coroner had the chance to perform the autopsy.

I will ask my instructors more about this.

I watched a movie titled "After Life" and it was such a scary movie. The embalmer was manipulating the deaths of individuals so that he could make money. It's business as usual.

i remember the first time i opened a human cadaver. the body was that of a young middle-aged woman, still with hair, her tags in her arm, and the iv line that entered through her ijv (internal jugular vein) and to her aorta and cardiac apparatus; pumping preservative formalin throughout her entire body.

the body was deceased no more than 2 days. it was standard procedure for us to remover her clothing, and shave her hair off. the removal of her hair and then the subsequent removal of the dermal lining (effectively skinning her) the semblance of humanity that was wit her was removed.

after that, our medical anatomy professor reiterated time and time again, "remove yourself from woe, they are here for you, donated themselves to the training of doctors. consider yourself priviledged."

still, despite that, the first time i opened her rib cage with bone cracker , was a shock for me. within the body of a human, beyond the sensitivity , talks, emotions, lies nothing but organic meat. and a clockwork of organ-systems.

it is amazing how after life leaves the body. there really is nothing left. anatomically speaking, there is very little to no difference between man and ape.

this article reminded me of that.

It's a reminder for all of us  once again, that God created man and the breath of life was given to him for a reason;
to seek the Lord  but very precious few obey such commandment.
After  man take his last breath, his spirit return to his  Maker and his soul waiting for judgment while his
body return to dust where it all started.

very poignant message, ma'am states.

before i even touched the scalpel, my group and i took a minute of reflective silence. we thanked the body for the gift of her body, for the chance to look into her body , the cause of death, and the teaching that she was to give us. with care and understanding, we opened her and prepared her piece by piece, and when finished, we made sure to apply ample formalin and preservatives to keep her preserved as much as possible.

it was humbling when we opened her cranium. i opted to use standard craniotomy technique, meaning after scalping her, and removing the underlying cranial muscles (frontalis muscles, temporalis muscles, occipito-frontalis muscles etc) we sawed her open. revealing the brain and related structures.

looking at her brain, and then removing it was quite an experience. to think that this entity used to think, relay information, remembered old memories, old sweethearts, adoration from family, and prayed in thought and action. it is gone. even the nerves were beginning to decay before our eyes. in fact, it is rather hard to look at small nerves and plexus of nerves post-mortem. it is best seen only during life.

it gives color to the saying, "once life has passed on, the body, the shell, will inevitably crumble."
