US Presidential Oath-Taking: Obama Takes Two
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:59:55 PM »

Barack Obama has been sworn in as US president for the second time in two days, because one word was given out of order during Tuesday's ceremony.

The Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, John Roberts, administered the oath again at the White House.

The decision to repeat the oath was taken out of an abundance of caution, an official said.

But Mr Obama joked: "We decided it was so much fun...." before adding: "We're going to do it very slowly."

In contrast to the first oath-taking, Mr Obama did not swear on a Bible and his wife Michelle was not at his side.

And instead of an audience of millions, only a few close aides saw the second attempt, with even journalists excluded from the Map Room of the White House. - source: BBC

I'm not sure but I think US Chief Justice Roberts tried to administer the Oath from memory. Perhaps he was not looking at a written copy.

The gaffe happened when CJ Roberts recited a long phrase of the oath and Pres. Obama had a hard time following. Obama just stopped mid sentence and smiled. CJ Roberts repeated the phrase and from then on, he abbreviated the oath.

It was thought that the failure to take the oath in the correct wording as stated in the US Constitution could affect the legality of Obama's assumption as President.

Indeed, taking the oath for the second time, as reported, is a good measure of caution. But, in my humble opinion, the oath-taking gaffe may not be considered a serious threat to Obama's legitimacy IF there is written oath of office which he signed afterward and subscribed before the Chief Justice.

That's right Companiero.

Personally, a snitch in an oath caught on worldwide television may matter if people go to great lengths to trivialize.

But the most binding is the oath that is sworn and subscribed.

Am sure those anti-Obamas would be the ones raising the howl.

Attorns, I think President Obama stopped mid sentence and smiled because he knew CJ Roberts messed up the oath and he kind of gave CJ Roberts a chance to make it right.
