fter weeks of denial and pressure from the public as well as politicians, Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig has resigned. His resignation will go into effect September 30.
The senator made the announcement in Boise, Saturday morning, in a much anticipated news conference. Many people on Capitol Hill have been pushing for this resignation, following a sex scandal that has damaged his reputation, and his party.
Craig was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer that was investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom.
The officer said in court that the senator's behavior indicated he wanted some kind of sexual contact. Craig denies that saying it was a misunderstanding.
On August 8th, Senator Craig pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed.
Since then, audio tapes have been released of the interview between the Senator and the undercover officer, damaging Craig's reputation even more.
