Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will head the
transitional government, according to an agreement signed in Qatar's capital Doha on Monday, Xinhua reported.
Rival Hamas and Fatah signed the agreement to form a unified transitional government for the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Abbas as prime minister.
The new government is expected to be formed within the next few weeks, the pan-Arab TV channel al-Jazeera reported Monday.
It is not immediately clear whether current Prime Minister Salam Fayyad would join the upcoming transitional government.
On Sunday, an official from Abbas' Fatah party said Palestinian rivals had accepted a Qatari proposal that Abbas should lead the interim government to end the chronic split.
