Iraq agreed to buy 18 U.S. F-16 fighter jets, U.S. Gen. Michael Ferriter said Sept. 27, AP reported. U.S. contractors or forces could train Iraqi pilots, Ferriter said, adding that this could provide a basis for Iraqi air sovereignty. A second U.S. official said that the deal is worth an estimated $3 billion and that the planes are expected in Iraq in 2013. An Iraqi government spokesman said that a partial payment of $1.4 billion has been paid and that the F-16s could be in Iraq as early as autumn of 2012.
