F-18 Fighter Jet Crashes in San Diego
« on: December 09, 2008, 03:04:02 PM »
A US military F-18 fighter jet has crashed into a residential area of San Diego, killing three people on the ground and injuring the pilot.

The San Diego Fire Department described the scene of the crash as "a heavily populated area" near Interstate 805.

TV footage showed plumes of white smoke rising from several houses.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the jet had crashed as it prepared to land at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and that the pilot had ejected.

The crash occurred two miles (3.2km) from the base, it added.

Personnel from Air Station Miramar, famous for its role in the movie Top Gun, have been dispatched to the crash site to investigate.

The Marine Corps said the jet, a two-seater F/A-18D Hornet, had been on a training mission with only one pilot on board.

Mayor Jerry Sanders and a military official sent out their condolences to the families of the victims, whose identities have yet to be released. - BBC

in my analysis, one of the reasons for the economic meltdown in the U.S. maybe its involvement in the war in iraq. just imagine the amount of military hardware that they have deployed to that country and the number of troops and food that they have to transport on a regular basis halfway across the globe, it must have cost them a large fortune and perhaps even their economy. if a single f-18 costs 38.5 million dollars, think about the total number of aircraft and other military hardware and equipment that have been lost since the start of the war and you cannot imagine the staggering cost involved.

and think of it, F/A 18 is an old aircraft...can you imagine the cost to build the F-22 stealth fighter, B-2 bomber, F-35 JSF...the Aircraft Carriers and Submarines to name a few?

that's the point i'm driving at slackware. the cost of military hardware and the number of these that have been lost. i have not been keeping count but since the beginning of the war, a few stealth fighters and AH-64 apache helicopters have been lost, not to mention ground equipment like tanks and trucks that have been blown up. the cost... the americans don't really want to make a donation in the form of warfare equipment, slackware. the so-called donations made by america before were actually costed for the rental the U.S. had to pay for the use of subic and clark before their contract expired in the early 90s. that is the reason why since then, we no longer hear of the U.S. donating hand-me-down helicopters and trainer aircraft to the philippines. you see, america has been sneaky with filipinos for the longest time. during the early years of WW II, president roosevelt appealed to the filipinos to fight for them and help defend america with the promise of equal military benefits with their american counterparts. around quarter of a million filipinos heeded that call. in 1946, just a year after the end of the war, the U.S. congress singled out the filipinos - from among 60 other nationalities that fought in the war under the american flag - to be excluded from those who will receive equal military benefits with americans through the Recission Act of 1946. after spilling filipino blood for the americans including members of the U.S. congress who signed the recession act who were probably growing a fat belly during the war years, the americans repaid the filipinos by taking away their full military benefits. in plain and simple terms, gilalo ta sa mga americano. shortly after, the U.S. coaxed the filipinos into entering into an agreement with them that would allow their troops to be stationed in the philippines and promised to pay a rental fee. again the filipinos were short-changed in 2 counts: (1) the "rental fee" was very small. around the end of their contract, the americans were paying around $ 800 million for the full and continued all-year-round use of subic and clark. in comparison, the american were paying $ 7 billion dollars to israel in exchange for landing rights ONLY. no fill-time military base. just landing rights; (2) the americans don't pay the rental in cash, not even in check. they pay in kind. the sad part is that when they pay in kind they short-change us yet again on 2 counts: [1] they pay us hand-me-down (read ukay ukay) equipment like circa vietnam war huey helicopters, old trainer jets, etc.; [2] when americans pay their ukay ukay payment, the call it aid and make it appear as if they were donating something to us, not paying rent. so, again, gilalo lang gihapon ta sa mga americano. but going back to slackware's suggestion that some of american military hardware be donated to the philippines, well, the things facts cited above are the reasons why the americans will no longer make "donations" now like they used to (when the U.S. bases were still around).

mdb, i have a strong conviction that the american military involvement in iraq is one of the reasons, if not the chief reason, for the economic crisis that has befallen the U.S. even if no one in america is openly saying so. i gave it some thought and took my cue from an old teaching given by sun tzu.

sun tzu is an ancient chinese warrior and philisopher who wrote the book "the art of war" more than 2,000 years ago. in his book, he says that a country who goes to war that lasts long is going to ruin its economy. in effect, sun tzu is saying thta if you go to war, you must do so quickly and decisively. if it gets protracted like how the war in iraq is turning out, then it the economy is bound to certain ruination. sun tzu also said that any country that goes to war in a faraway land and brings with them a lot of equipment as well as their food and other supplies will incur a huge expense in carrying out the war. unless, they live off the land that they will conquer.

in the case of the U.S. it has brought everything -- supplies and equipment -- from stealth fighters and apache helicopters to toothbrushes and toilet paper halfway across the globe for its troops to use. surely, transport cost alone would cost so much let alone expending and using all these supplies and equipment in a war that has been going on for the last five years.

given the above-mentioned facts, there's little wonder then why america's coffers would run dry.

(the funny thing is that every one in america is pointing elsewhere as to why they are experiencing economic woes at this time. these americans are an interestingly amusing breed, don't you think?

glacier: building military hardware is no longer as lucrative as it used to be. it can only become economically viable if a lot of other countries would buy them. the truth of the matter is that many countries are now into producing their own and that makes U.S. market for american-made military hardware very limited. this is even happening in the commercial aircraft sector. in the past, this industry was dominated by the americans such as mcdonnell-douglas, boeing, but now they are getting very stiff competition from that european consortium that makes airbus. so now, american aircraft companies are just struggling to survive.

No Iraq war is the main reason of economic crisis. The cause of the financial crisis is there were bills passed to give loans to people who did not qualify for them, and like predicted they defaulted on the loans and now the banks are out that money. Too many bad mortgages were made over the last decade or so. It was OK as long as housing prices went up, because they could be re-financed, or paid as the house sold.
And second in my opinion is the spending habits of most american.Living beyond their means.Mura sad sa uban Filipino bisan di ka afford mangutang para naa konoy ipasigarbo.Spending more than they earn. Spending today what they are yet to earn tomorrow.

i'm just wondering if the american government would be willing to account for ALL the expenditures it incurred on account of the war in iraq and make this information known to the public. then maybe we can really conclude if indeed american involvement did not really cause in any way the economic crunch in the U.S.
