Germany continues insisting on the necessity for unity among all members of the UN Security Council on the Syrian issue, as said in a statement by German Cabinet official representative Steffen Seibert on Friday.
“We hope that the Security Council will develop a solid stance (on Syria),†he noted. German officials repeatedly stressed that if the facts of chemical weapons use in Syria are proved, this shouldn’t remain unanswered. “We hope that nobody from the SC is going to close eyes to such a crime,†Seibert added.
Meanwhile, the government stated that Germany was not going to participate in the possible military operation in Syria. As Foreign Affairs Minister Guido Westerwelle said in an interview with Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, Germany didn’t receive any requests of that kind.
Candidate for chancellor post from Social Democratic Party Peer Steinbrück also noted the need in political resolution of the Syrian conflict. “Negotiations lasting a hundred hours are better that one minute of shooting,†he said. The politician, considered as the main rival of Angela Merkel at the upcoming parliamentary elections on September 22, reckons discussing the Syrian issue on the sidelines of the G20 summit in St. Petersburg on September as important.
