Vietnam - The fatalities from the collapse of the Can Tho bridge that occurred on September 25 has climbed to 64 while some 180 people are currently under medical care by early September 27.
The military zone No. 9 sent more soldiers to the site to help out efforts to find the workers believed to be still trapped in the rubble.
About 250 workers and engineers were reported to be working on the bridge when a 90m long span, which was part of the bridge's approach road, collapsed.
Construction of the Can Tho bridge, which is the longest in the Mekong delta so far, began in 2004 and is slated for completion next year.
The Can Tho bridge, once completed, will be Viet Nam's longest cable bridge at a total length of 2,750m and a four-lane carriageway of 26m wide.
It will have a clearance height of 39 metres to allow 15,000 DWT-sized ships to pass under.
The bridge will significantly improve the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta's accessibility to Ho Chi Minh City .
A consortium of Japanese contractors - the Taisei Corporation, the Kajima Corporation and the Nippon Steel Corporation- is building the bridge while Nippon Koei-Chodai is the supervising consultant.
