Boholano Prelate In the Middle Of Haiti Earthquake Devastation

POPE PRAYS FOR HAITI EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI prayed for victims of a massive earthquake in Haiti and urged the international community to provide generous assistance to the stricken population of the Caribbean nation.

The victims included Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot of Port-au-Prince.

"The lifeless body of Archbishop Joseph Miot of Port-au-Prince was found this morning under the rubble of the archbishops' residence," L'Osservatore Romano said in a Page 1 story Jan. 13.

Archbishop Bernardito Auza (from Talibon, Bohol), the Vatican's apostolic nuncio in Haiti, told the Vatican missionary news agency Fides: "Port-au-Prince is completely devastated. The cathedral and the archbishop's residence, all the big churches, all the seminaries are reduced to rubble."

Pope Benedict made his appeal at the end of his general audience Jan. 13, some 12 hours after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Haiti, toppling buildings and causing widespread destruction. The number of casualties was not immediately known, but local officials called it a major catastrophe.

Pope Benedict said he wanted to highlight the dramatic situation in Haiti following the "devastating earthquake, which resulted in serious loss of human life, a great number of homeless and missing, and enormous material damage."

"I appeal to the generosity of everyone, so that our brothers and sisters receive our concrete solidarity and the effective support of the international community in this moment of need and suffering," he said.

He said the Catholic Church's charity organizations would immediately move into action to assist those most in need.

"I invite everyone to join in my prayer to the Lord for the victims of this catastrophe and for those who are mourning their loss. I assure my spiritual closeness to people who have lost their homes and to all those affected in various ways by this calamity, imploring from God consolation and relief of their suffering," he said.

Archbishop Auza said he had toured the capital on the morning after the earthquake and found the country's ministry buildings, schools and supermarkets destroyed. He said the headquarters of the U.N. stabilization force in Port-au-Prince had completely collapsed, reportedly trapping hundreds in the debris.

"I found priests and nuns on the street, who no longer have homes. The rector of the seminary survived, and so did the dean, but the seminarians are under the rubble. Everywhere there are cries coming from under the rubble," he said.

He said a study institute for men and women religious had collapsed, with many students inside as they attended a conference. The nunciature withstood the quake, and there were no injuries there, he said.

"We cannot enter or stay inside for very long because the earth continues to tremble. So we're camped out in the garden," he said.

Caritas Internationalis, the Vatican-based umbrella organization for Catholic charities, said it was mobilizing to provide immediate assistance to Haiti. On Jan. 13 it had already assembled an emergency relief team to fly to Haiti to assist Caritas members already working in the country. It said there had not yet been contact with the Haitian Caritas office.

Caritas Internationalis humanitarian director Alistair Dutton was leading the emergency relief team, Caritas said in a statement.

"There is a strong Caritas presence in Haiti. We already know that Caritas staff will be providing support to survivors of the earthquake, such as food, shelter and comfort through churches and parish networks," Dutton said.

"A priority for Caritas will be to assess the damage and our local capacity to provide aid to survivors of the quake. Caritas runs more than 200 hospitals and medical centers in Haiti. It is experienced and prepared to respond to humanitarian disasters there as a result of the frequent hurricanes," he said.

"Communication with our staff on the ground is difficult, but we are piecing together a picture of desperate need. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Conflict, recent natural disasters, and poverty have left Haitians with weak infrastructure. Working in that environment will be difficult," he said.

In its statement, Caritas said the cathedral in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince was badly damaged.

Caritas also said the U.S.-based Catholic Relief Services had been in communication with its staff in Haiti. The local CRS office was still standing and CRS staff present at the time of the quake were safe, it said. CRS staff described the quake as "a major hit ... a direct hit."

Here's the latest I received from the Archbishop today:

DEAR ROEL,

THANKS. I JUST CAME BACK FROM "MISSIONS OF MERCY", FIND THE DEAD, CONSOLE THE LIVING, RELAY NEWS, BLESS CROWDS AND ALL THAT. I NEED HELP AS MUCH AS I CAN.

HOW ABOUT IF MANNEX CAN DO THE WRITE UP? I WILL GIVE SOME INFORMATION AS FOLLOWS.

THE CAPITAL CITY OF PORT-AU-PRINCE IS HOME TO AROUND 3,5 MILLION PEOPLE. AROUND 67% ARE SLUM AREAS CONSTITUTING MORE THAN 3 MILLION INHABITANTS. THE EPICENTER WAS ONLY TEN KMS FROM THE CITY CENTER OF PORT-AU-PRINCE.
THE DEVASTATION WAS TOTAL IN MANY AREAS. IT'S TOTAL DESOLATION IN THE CITY CENTER AND IN SOME SLUM AREAS ON THE HILL SIDES.

ONE OF THE VICTIMS IS THE ARCHBISHOP OF PORT-AU-PRINCE, ARCH. JOSEPH SERGE MIOT. HE GOT THROWN OUT OF THE BALCONY BY THE FORCE OF THE QUAKE, FELL HEADLONG ON THE CEMENT PAVEMENT DOWN BELOW THEN COVERED WITH THE RUBBLES OF HIS RESIDENCE COMPRETELY REDUCED TO DUST AND SMALL PIECES OF CEMENT.

THE GREATEST MATERIAL LOSS IS SUFFERED BY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE STATE OF HAITI, BECAUSE THEY HAD THE MOST IMPORTANT BUILDINGS AND INSTITUTIONS.

THE STATE HAS LOST THE NATIONAL PALACE, THE PRIVATE RESIDENCE OF THE PRESIDENT, THE PARLIAMENT, ALL 17 MINISTRIES AND MANY MORE REDUCED TO DUST.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH LOST THE ARCHBISHOP, THE CATHEDRAL AND ALL THE PRECIOUS CHURCHES, ALL TWO MAJOR SEMINARIES, DOZENS OF CHURCHES, CONVENTS, SCHOOLS...

THE UN MISSION TOO SUFFERED GREAT LOSS, LIKE THE DEATH OF THE SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL AND CHEF OF THE MINUSTAH (UN MISSION), HEDI ANNABI, AND OF HIS DEPUTY, LUIS DA SILVA, AS WELL AS AROUND 200 OTHERS TRAPPED IN THE COLLAPSED FIVE-STORY HEADQUARTERS. THREE FILIPINOS ARE ALSO TRAPPED AND SOME FILIPINOS WORKING IN SUPERMARKETS ARE ALSO SOME OF THE VICTIMS.

THE GOVERNMENT ESTIMATES THE DEAD TO BE AROUND OR MORE THAN 100,000. THAT WOULD NOT BE FAR FROM THE TRUTH, OR THE TRUTH COULD BE WORSE THAN THAT. SOME SHANTY TOWNS TEEMING WITH HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WIPED OUT.

THE APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TRIES TO COORDINATE, BRING HELP, CONSOLE WITH THE WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER THE POPE, BRING NEWS TO GROUPS AND COMMUNITIES. HE'S ALWAYS IN TOUCH WITH THE BISHOPS AND THE BIG CHURCH AID AGENCIES LIKE THE CRS AND CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS AND CARITAS HAITI. EVIDENTLY, WITH THE VATICAN AUTHORITIES.

THE NUNCIO MUST BE ONE OF THE VERY LUCKY FEW WHO STILL HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION. MOST OF THE EMBASSIES HAVE THEIR SYSTEMS DOWN. THE BUILDING WHICH HOSTED THE EMBASSIES OF BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, JAPAN AND THE EUROPEAN UNION IS ALMOST COLLAPSING... ABANDONNED NOW... THE SPANISH AMBASSADOR WAS EVACUATED AS THE EMBASSY COLLAPSED, IN PARTICULAR THE RESIDENTIAL PART.

THE MOST PRACTICAL, EASIEST TO SEND AND TO RECEIVE AID IS MONEY. PLEASE SEND DONATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING ACCOUNT AT THE VATICAN

BANK: ISTITUTO PER LE OPERE DI RELIGIONE, VATICAN CITY
ACCOUNT NUMBER: 20480001
TITULAR: NONCIATURE APOSTOLIQUE EN HAITI
SIGNATORY: ARCHBISHOP BERNARDITO AUZA, APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TO HAITI
MEMO: FOR QUAKE VICTIMS IN HAITI

ALL DONATIONS WILL BE PROFOUNDLY APPRECIATED AND 100% USE FOR VICTIMS. NO ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS OR WHATEVER. PLEASE GIVE DONOR'S NAME TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED LATER BY THE NUNCIO.

HOW DOES THAT SOUND? SEND IT TO ALL THE FRIENDS....

I AM BARELY STANDING! I AM EXHAUSTED!

BARNEY

My reply to today's communique:

Archbishop Barney,

Just read your latest reply... I've been reading all other emails earlier. This would suffice. Ignore my last email. We know it's you (security reasons lang to). Betty Veloso Garcia (TBTK), Fr. Katiw Napiere (Filipino Migrants in Taiwan) and Fr. Arnold Zamora (Paring Bol-anon, USA) are all in agreement, per suggestion also of Bishop Yiet (of Surigao), Fr Soc Mesiona (MSP) and others, to send the aid directly to you via the account you gave us. Betty and Fr. Arnold will send theirs this weekend before they leave for a trip they said. I will send ours after this weekend's second collection. I'm sure you will receive more aid as the U.S. Conference of Bishops are also encouraging their respective dioceses to take up collection for Haiti this coming weekend. We just hope to get the aid as early as possible.

I will forward your WRITE UP INFO to both (Atty) Mannix Cimafranca (Manila) and Charlie Ayco (Habitat-Bangkok)) and maybe Peter Dejaresco (DYRD) can do something about spreading the news back home in Bohol and the Philippines. I will also relay the news to Leo Udtohan (Bared News on Bohol Chronicle) who's been inquiring about your status. He could be of great help, too. That's the least I can do for now. Stay safe and will keep you in thought and prayers.

Thank you, guys, for all your help!!!

I was told that this institution is preparing to help;

Historical Timeline of Aid to the Church in Need
Aid to the Church in Need (Kirche in Not in German, Aiuto alla Chiesa che Soffre in Italian) describes itself as "an international pastoral aid organization of the Catholic Church, which yearly offers financial support to more than 8,000 projects worldwide. We try to help Catholics in need wherever they are repressed or persecuted and therefore prevented from living according to their faith."

What is now Aid to the Church in Need was founded by Dutch Catholic priest Father Werenfried van Straaten at Christmas 1947 to aid German expellees and refugees fled from or expelled from Eastern Europe in the wake of the Second World War, many of them Catholic.

With international headquarters in Königstein in Germany since 1975, it currently has branches in 16 countries of the world. Its main publication is Mirror.

Following a 1984 decree of the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy, Aid to the Church in Need was recognized by the Catholic Church as a "universal public association of faithful".

In 2001, the organization raised more than $75 million, entirely from private donations.

Aid to the Church in Need was born out of the ashes of World War II, when Father Werenfried Van Straaten — a young Dutch priest whose name means "Warrior for Peace" — set out to meet the material and spiritual needs of homeless and dispossessed victims of the war, including the German civilians in occupied and partitioned Germany after May 1945.

In the more than half century since, Aid to the Church in Need has expanded its mission, bringing material aid and the light of the Gospel to millions of poor, forgotten, and persecuted people in more than 120 countries. It all began on Christmas Day, 1947, with an article, "No Room at the Inn," written by Father Werenfried for his abbey's newsletter Excerpt from, "No Room at the Inn," the article that gave birth to the organization in 1947.

"Eighty miles to the east lies a town (in post-war Germany) in ruins. Hardly anything remains of it except for a gigantic air-raid shelter, a so-called Bunker, like the ones the Germans built everywhere to protect the population from bombing.

Those of the impoverished people of the town who still remain alive dwell in this single Bunker. Thousands are crowded together in pestilential stench. Each family, insofar as they can still be called families, lies huddled together on a few square yards of concrete.

Here is neither fire nor warmth, other than the warmth of bodies crowded together. Among these people too, Christ seeks to dwell in His purity, His love, His goodness. The shepherds worshipped Christ in a stable, but these people have not even a stable. By human standards Christ cannot live here.

There is no room for Him." Wikipedia

A Boholano group in NY had the same problem; they requested more info from the Papal Nuncio who in turn said he'll inquire pod sa Vatican. I haven't tried it myself kay gahapon pami nangolekta. Ihap pa rong adlawa (Monday) and hopefully able to send it tomorrow. M.L. King ra ba pod ron, holiday ug way pasok trabaho ug sira bangko.

JANUARY 17, 2010 UPDATE FROM ARCHBISHOP BARNEY VIA PARING BOL-ANON, USA:

From Fr. Arnold Zamora:

Barnes,

Cynthia has been forwarding me some of your emails. I sometimes forward them to PB-USA groups. It saves repeating your story to them. I was ready to issue a check for you from PB-USA fund. Unfortunately, after I issued a check for Bp Yiet, we realized it was the last check. We run out of checks. I am scheduled to fly tomorrow evening, and tomorrow the banks are closed in observance of Martin Luther Day. Fr. Boy Paloso, our treasurer, has graciously offered to use his personal money for the meantime so we can send it soon. We will of course reimburse him. The important thing is we expedite our donation the soonest possible time and that will be Tuesday. Expect a donation of $2000 from PB-USA. Basig nakadungog ang Archdiocese namo ni Roel when we expressed our revolutionary sentiments that we cannot wait for them (chancery/diocese) to tell us when to ask a second collection. SF Archbishop Niederauer has asked all churches in the Archdiocese to make a second collection last weekend. Most importantly, we had a special prayer for all the survivors and victims besides my personal appeal. Forget the sex appeal. It's always there. Lami untag idiretso tanan diha nimo ang among second collection. Ingon si Roel, atunga-on. Let's see what we can do. Sungag kaliwat ni Dagohoy!

Prayerfully,

arn-arn

Reply from Archbishop Auza
:

thanks. my health seems to be getting "less". the fatigue seems to be taking its toll now. i had a series of meetings today no time to rest my stomach is starting to give in. i went to the hospital to see the corpse of the archbishop. his head is fractured in many parts. what a pity i liked him as archbishop and as a person. he was a very reasonable man and was always correct in the administration.

we celebrated mass in the open today. there was a CBS cameraman. i did not even talk to him. too busy comforting people and many came. even the richest lost their wealth!

our biggest fear is security. the police assigned to the nunciature dont come because they have their own problems.
we still sleep in the open and my back starts to ache. but we are much better than the rest!

did you see that the pope mentioned me in his angelus today? hah, i am consoled!

thank everyone for their prayers and send this to the family and friends.

Joey is an artist through and through, since both parents are artists, too, so I presume it is hereditary.Last word Expo in Hannover, the theme song was written by Joey with this typical Lumad music instruments. Sori nasimang ang akong posting, just happy to meet somebody from Davao.

This is from American Catholic Org. where I get my minute meditations and saints of the day;
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Injured people rest outside the destroyed cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Jan. 13.
VATICAN CITY (CNS)—Pope Benedict XVI prayed for victims of a massive earthquake in Haiti and urged the international community to provide generous assistance to the stricken population of the Caribbean nation.

Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Vatican's apostolic nuncio in Haiti, told the Vatican missionary news agency Fides: "Port-au-Prince is completely devastated.

CRS staff described the quake as "a major hit ... a direct hit."  John Thavis

Thats good that the Canadian government is doing that!

Ako ning donate ko sa red cross, ug prayers pood para sa mga tawo didto.

I read that there were estimated 75k+ dead in Haiti, but due to the shear amount of aid coming in and volunteers, a sense of normalcy has taken effect.

I have friends who are medical residents who enlisted in the Doctors without Borders who are there right now.
How I wish I could do that too. IMHO, this is a service of a lifetime.

Forward!

I finally was able to wire the money we collected this afternoon. I hope makalusot to with the new address/accounts and swift codes we were given. Our parish gave a total of $7,554.00. $4,327 went straight to Haiti while the other $3,227.00 have to go via Catholic Charities per instruction of our Archdiocese. Thanks be to God ni responde mga tawo even if we have a poorer parish. Unya Capital One also waived the transfer fee kay para man intawon sa Haiti Quake Victims.
