134 Filipino Seamen Held Hostage by Somali Pirates
« on: November 20, 2008, 03:22:00 PM »
Somalian pirates on Tuesday hijacked an Iranian-operated vessel with seven Filipinos among its 25-man crew off the pirates-infested high seas of Somalia at the Gulf of Aden, bringing to 134 the number of Filipino seamen now held as hostages inside Somalia’s isolated village of Eyl, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said today.

The hijacking of the Hong Kong-flagged “M/V Delight” brought to eight the number of vessels with Filipino crew members captured and still in Somali custody since Sept. 17, said DFA Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Claro Cristobal.

Records show that five of these vessels were hijacked by Somali pirates in the month of November alone, in wanton demonstration of sheer criminality and total violation of international law.

All 25 crew members of “Delight” appear unharmed, according to reports to the DFA by the Philippine embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, the closest Philippine mission to Somalia.

Cristobal said the embassies in Manama (Bahrain), Tehran (Iran) and Nairobi (Kenya) have been instructed to coordinate with government and international maritime authorities for the safe release of both hostages and vessels.

The still-detained vessels also have other foreign crew members, and their respective embassies generally work together with representatives from the Philippines, their manning agencies and ship owners in negotiating for the release.

It is generally known that multimillion-dollar ransoms are paid by ship owners for the release of hostages, though the DFA denies being involved in ransom talks.

As of Thursday, Nov. 20, the vessels and the date of their capture with the respective number of Filipino crew members are:

“M/T Centauri” captured on Sept. 17, with 26 Filipinos; “M/T Capt. Stefanos" (Sept. 21), with 17 captives; “M/T African Sanderling" (Oct. 15), with 21 Filipinos; “M/T Stolt Strength" (Nov. 10) with 23 Filipinos; “F/B Tiany #8” (Nov. 14) with three Filipinos; “M/Sirius Star” (Nov. 15) with 19 Filipinos; “M/V Chemstar Venus" (Nov. 16) with 18 Filipinos, and “M/V Delight” (Nov. 18) with seven Filipinos. - PNA
