MANILA, Philippines -- National Artist Napoleon Abueva was born on Jan. 26, 1930 in Bohol.

The sculptor -- whose works include the double crucifix inside the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, and the Transfiguration, a towering Christ figure at the Eternal Gardens Memorial Park in Caloocan City -- studied at the UP School of Fine Arts under Guillermo Tolentino.

He later became dean of the UP College of Fine Arts. Abueva was named a National Artist in sculpture in 1977. Cyril L. Bonabente, Inquirer Research

Ben, Abueva's house is located near the Municipal Hall of Duero. It can be seen along the highway.

The ex mayor of my hometown Duero is Abueva, his daughter Liza was my former classmate in elementary, they reside at barangay Itum just a few meters away from the residence of Dr. Maning Tan our incumbent mayor. Napoleon was indeed a close relatives of the Abueva's in Duero i've heard the national artist visited in our hometown before.

Brownman, they are from Duero.  :)  The building beside the highway is the one he designed when he and his siblings were planning to set up a bank.  His house is further down from the road, just by the beach.  It's like a ship inside. :)

Mao ni Bol-anon nga dako ug nahimo sa atong provincia nga dunay effect sa tagsa tagsa natong garbo. His works will make us proud. His works will inspire us and our youth to emulate him. His works represent images that speak of a thousand meaning. And his works will remain for as long as these are exhibited/displayed where they are situated.

When we celebrated the centennial of our independence in 1998, the Cultural Center of the Philippines launched a coffetable book that recognized the Top 100 Filipinos in Culture.  Three are Boholanos. One of them is Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva, National Artist in Sculpture. The other two are Loonanon brothers Jose "Pete" F. Lacaba Jr. and Emmanuel Agapito F. Lacaba.  Both are top-calibre writers of poetry, prose and film scripts. They are described below:

Jose ‘Pete’ F. Lacaba Jr. - brother of Emmanuel ‘Eman’ Agapito F. Lacaba and former member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. Pete is a poet, editor and scriptwriter of some of Lino Brocka’s memorable films.  He is currently the executive editor of Yes! magazine. He has authored six poetry collections in Filipino and a collection of journalistic reportage entitled Days of Disquiet, Nights of Rage. He has also written screenplays for award-winning films including Jaguar, Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim, Orapronobis, Sister Stella L, Eskapo, Segurista and Rizal sa Dapitan.  The 10th Osian's - Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema honored him with the Aruna Vasudev Lifetime Achievement Award for his writings on cinema.

Emmanuel ‘Eman’ Agapito F. Lacaba + - considered the only poet warrior of the Philippines and a genius while studying at the Ateneo de Manila University.  The book Six Young Filipino Martyrs states, “Not many poets are given the honor of becoming martyrs for their country. In the Philippines there are only two: Jose Rizal and a disciple he never knew." That disciple is Eman, son of Jose Monreal Lacaba, a Loonanon. The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) confers the Gawad Eman Lacaba to young poets.  Eman wrote the lyrics of “Awit ni Kuala”, the song sung by Lolita Rodriguez in the classic Lino Brocka film masterpiece "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang". He also composed new revolutionary lyrics in Cebuano for some well–known folk songs.

Pete Lacaba was one of our panelists during a UP National Writers Workshop held in Davao. He's a very humble man. He speaks Tagalog most of the time.

I meet Napoleon Above and his brother Dr. Jose Abueva a former UP President at the Opening Ceremony of President Carlos P. Garcia Memorabilia at the El President Residential in Sgt. Esquirra former Bohol Ave. near ABS-CBN in QC. They have School in Marikina called Kalayaan Colleges.

He is one to emulate as true Boholano Archiver in Art. And his brother Dr. Jose Above is a colleague of mine in GFN(Global Filipino Nation)

Salute to the Abuevas. May their clan increase in hundred fold.

nay oblation sa ila balay. pero wa man mahuman di ba?

his parents and a sibling i think died in valencia, bohol during world war 2. a memorial in their honor was built by the abuevas later. its the structure near the boundary of garcia hernandez and valencia.

very touching story. as it was wartime, if i remember it right, dr. abueva had carry the remains of his parents and sibling in a boat just to give them an honorable burial.
