Briccio “Bryck†Canda Apellanes, a bilingual writer in English and Cebuano, succumbed to a lingering illness at Kaiser Permanente in California, USA, last April 2, his daughter Florette said in her email sent Friday. He was 84.
The Apellaneses live in Sanderling Drive, Fairfield in the Vallejo District, CA.
Some of his pieces in English landed in several California newspapers, including one in Cebu. But for his vernacular output, he had sent some to the Bisaya Magazine based in Manila, the last of which was in 2006 about his biography in fictionized form entitled, “Ang Panimpalad sa Amerika†(A Job-hunting in America).
Back home, he used to work in the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
In 1979, the family migrated to the USA. With his work experiences plus the strength of twin degrees in Business and Law, he landed an accounting job in the State of California.
In retirement, he also made some contacts with Bisaya literati, this writer among them that he befriended since 2004.
The patriarch Apellanes is survived by his wife Florencia Balili and children and grandchildren.
His remains lie at the Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. For more details, relatives and friends may login

After a requiem mass at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, he will be buried at the Rockville Cemetery at noon on Monday, April 11. (PNA)
