Published by Bohol Chronicle

Lawyer Val Antonio B. Suarez, eldest child of the late Boholano ambassador to the United States' Pablito "Blyke" Suarez, was elected by the Board last week as the new president and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE).

Prior to his appointment, the 51-year old bar member of the IBP and the New York Bar was senior vice president and COO of the PSE since January this year.

Val of this city who also owns and operates a thriving commercial building Ambassador Arcade along Inting Street, is an Ateneo de Manila Law School graduate (with first honors) and an Economics collegiate graduate of the University of the Philippines.

Before his engagement with the exchange, Suarez was Managing Partner of the Suarez and Reyes Law Office in Makati and the Philippine Representative of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Investment Bank Asia Ltd. as well as a senior associate of the Sycip Salazar Hernandez Gatmaitan Law office.

It was his role as investment banker-lawyer that Suarez participated in either the acquisition or public offering deals of large companies like PAL, the National Steel, Ayala Land, RFM, Megaworld, Shoemart Prime, and Aboitiz Equity, among others.

FIT FOR THE JOB

Val Suarez, was voted by a committee after a long search and came in at a time when the stock exchange is faced with a growing foreign interest in the 250 Philippine listed companies with the ascension of president Benigno Aquino III as the new president.

"The numbers show that investors are expecting positive changes in the new administration of Aquino," the personable and extroverted Suarez told the Chronicle.

The huge public offering of Cebu Pacific, for instance, which was postponed before the elections - due to market conditions - involving P20 billion in new equity will likely proceed, along with several other huge Initial Public Offerings or IPOs.

Under his wake, the new CEO had finished the migration into a new trading system patterned after that of the New York stock exchange which will enable the local bourse to deal with equities, derivatives and commodities. The modality also has a bigger capacity and faster speed than the previous one.

Suarez has actively pushed for the new REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) where even lowly tricycle drivers (if well informed) can become a stock market player and enables firms with rental cash flow to liquify their receivables and expand their business.

He has also moved to institutionalize through the DEPED, the formation of stock market investment subjects in high school and college to develop the future based of informed investors.

The lawyer-banker hopes to carry out three major reforms or accomplishments during his three year term: (1) deepening the capital market in terms of issuers and players (2) enroll as many listed companies in a Good Governance covenanted group to improve ethical standards and (3) unify the Makati and Manila stock exchanges into one bourse in a building they hope to erect in Fort Bonifacio.

SUAREZ FAMILY

Val's father "Blyke" was a well-loved DFA official who died in Washington in 1993 with his boots on - in Washington DC as RP Ambassador to the USA under the term of president F.V. Ramos. He was being groomed to run for governor of Bohol by FVR until death overtook him in the 90s.

Val's mother Ely Belmonte was a career Executive officer at the Central Bank of the Philippines until her retirement.

Val is married to Cecilia Dolendo, herself an accomplished securities person as head of J.P. Morgan Securities in the country. They have two children: Camille, 13 and Paolo, 10.

Val keeps fit with his daily work-out routine at a nearby gym from his office and is a tennis and golf enthusiast.
