Russian cargo plane stuck at German airport for a year sold to mystery buyer
A Russian-owned Boeing 747 cargo plane that has been parked at Frankfurt-Hahn airport in Germany for a year due to sanctions over the war in Ukraine has been sold to an unknown buyer.
The plane, which belongs to CargoLogicAir UK, a subsidiary of Russia's Volga-Dnepr Group, was sent to Hahn airport for maintenance in March 2022.
However, it was prevented from taking off by German authorities after the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia for its military intervention in Ukraine.
According to Bild newspaper, the plane has been racking up fees of €1,200 per day for parking and security at the insolvent airport.
The fees have been paid regularly by the owners, who have also maintained contact with the airport and the Landesbetrieb Mobilität (LBM) Rhineland-Palatinate, the state agency responsible for enforcing the sanctions.
The LBM said that the plane could only leave if it was sold to a buyer who was not subject to sanctions or if it obtained a special permit from the German government.
However, no such permit has been granted so far. On Friday, LBM spokesman Harald Schmitz confirmed that the plane had been sold and that it would be transferred to its new owner soon.
He did not reveal any details about the buyer or their plans for the plane. The sale of the plane could bring some relief to Hahn airport, which has been struggling financially since its main shareholder, China's HNA Group, went bankrupt last year. The airport is mainly used by low-cost carriers and cargo operators.
