SANTO NIÑO PARISH (Valencia, 6306 Bohol)
The Santo Niño was officially installed as Patron of Valencia, Bohol, by virtue of a letter numbered 877 of the Ministry of Overseas Territories in Madrid, Spain, dated September 3, 1870. The establishment of the Parish of Valencia came a year after Panangatan, Canmanico and Cutcutan, all eastern barrios of the old town of Dimiao were constituted into a separate and independent town named Valencia on October 27, 1869.
Father Mariano Cornago was the first Parish Priest of Valencia. He started the building of the Poblacion and the construction of the church. He was succeeded in January 1878 by Fr. Francisco Arcaya who completed the construction of the church on September 7, 1882. He also completed the convent started by his predecessor and built the cemetery surrounded by a wall of stone tablets we call “cottaâ€.
Sto. Niño Parish is located at the Southeast of the Province of Bohol, 42 kilometers from the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker of the Diocese of Tagbilaran. It is rectangular in shape. Its land area is 10,886.50 hectares, with rolling steep hills in the north fed by the Panangatan River. The valley happens to be the breadbasket of the town producing rice as its staple food. The coastal areas are all level lands for residential and commercial purpose. The parish of Valencia composed of 35 barangays with 72 chapels. The major crops in the parish are rice, corn, coconut, peanut, camote, and other root crops and vegetables. Our coastal water is one of the fishing ground of the province. Other source of livelihood in the parish are ceramics, furniture making, wood carving, loom-weaving, basketry and hog raising. Our parish is also rich of tourism potentials like Badiang Spring in Anas, Interior of the Santo Niño church, Anislag Spring in Omjon, Empehan Cascading Falls in Ticum and Panangatan Valley.
Valencia has also rich historical and cultural heritage. Records tell us that the Treaty of Peace between Col. Pedro Samson and the Boholano soldier was signed at the Santo Niño convent. The sitio Lawis of barangay Banderahan has become the bastion of the last three wars, the wars against Spaniards, the Americans and the Japanese forces.
With present leadership, Valencia is determined to heed with progress. The town joins the movement of its development, pouring with financial assistance for its infrastructural developments the image of the town has changed a lot booming into modernization.
