Dead Dolphin in Valencia
« on: March 17, 2009, 11:16:53 PM »
By Ric Obedencio
Bohol Chronicle

A dolphin was washed ashore and found dead by a fisherman who was about to go fishing in the early morning of last Wednesday, police report said.

Ben Gamayot, a representative of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Vice-Mayor Jorge Buslon here confirmed this in an interview Thursday of last week.

Police report bared that a certain Jerry Tambago, the fisherman, was preparing for fishing at about 5 in the morning in barangay Canmanico when he found the unusual huge mammal looked drifted and lifeless. He then reported to the authorities what he saw.

Though the specie was not immediately identified, the police said that the estimated 120-kilo black dolphin with white at its belly was measured at 2.8 meters in length and 1.8 in diameter.

It was not however known what was the cause of its death, that prompted the authorities concerned to entomb the mammal near the municipal agricultural officer's (MAO) office.

fish ba to ang dolphin, sylvanus? mammal man guro to, hehehe. welcome to tb!!!

Valencia has a Comprehensive Coastal Resource Management Plan. correct me if im wrong, but i heard they conducted seminars and lectures in the management and protection of our marine resources. they also have coastal resource management team that oversees the preservation and protection of our marine resources.

there are also some areas designated as fish sanctuary where fishing is prohibited. these sanctuaries are managed by the above-mentioned teams.

this only means nga dili lang pangsemento ang nahimo sa mga lim sa valencia, hahaha.

moreover, na pud sila disaster preparedness guidelines specially in the event when tsunami hits the town. when i was in valencia last december 2008, i saw signages that direct people from the low-lying areas where to evacuate in case of such incident. in connection with this, the municipal government conducted a tsunami drill where snacks was provided for free, hehehe.

when i was in valencia last holy week, i learned that the dolphin in the abovesaid article bore stab wounds. it must have been beached because of the injury sustained and not because it got lost from the its family.
