Sir, i cannot help but remember my Lolo right now. I am here in the library 4:14 AM diri sa US time. But your post about my lolo has my mind afixed towards him and our conversations when he stayed with us for some time in 2003-2005.
When my Lolo and I would go walking around the neighborhood and or just talk for hours sa living room--i would ask him about his life as a driver, a farmer etc. All these things that ive heard from my mom lang.
And to hear it from my own Lolo's mouth was very humbling for me. Here--was a man who was the one that sent my mother and aunt to nursing school and 2 of my uncles to engineering school and my other uncle to graduate school---just by working as a truck driver. a humble truck driver. I would be nothing--not even here had it not been for the sacrifices of my Lolo Ciano.
Pero naka hinuktuk lang ko--because i remember baya sa una when i asked him how much he would charge for trips around Valencia, Garcia Hernandez, Jagna etc etc. Mo katawa rapood si lolo (with his very warm and lolo-ish laughter) mo ingoon rapood sija nako, "ah basta dili lagi mahal, doy, kananag barata rapood, gud".
Ingoon sijan nako sa una kono ug walay kwarta ang tawo para sa plete, mo accept kono si lolo with payment as in: saging, camote, potato, sometimes tagaan pood sija sabao, konon-on rapood.
I was surprised pood. Ingkoon pood ko, "Really, Lolo? You accepted that too?"
Mo respond pood si lolo with his very quaint and Taga-Anas tone, "Oo gud, ug walay kwarta ang tawo para sa plete, okay rapood if tagaan pood ko saging ra. Tagaan man pood ko sa grasya sa Ginoo."
That really imprinted on my mind.
"Tagaan pood ko sa grasya sa Ginoo."
I do believe it. I really do. My lolo is a very good man. Mao na he is beloved by all of his apos. Ako, mingaw mingaw ko kaayo sa ahong Lolo Ciano.
