Not so bad, considering the population of Valencia is over 30,000. Roughly 10% of the town lives below poverty, but about 90% are above poverty levels.

Not bad at all considering the Poverty rate in Bohol Province, as a whole is 42.3% ,which is the highest in Region 7, higher than the national average rate of 37.5%.

Definitely the current administration in Valencia has more work to do, to reduce the poverty in our town. Below 5% would be ideal, definitely a standard the all the towns in Bohol should strive for. Progress forward, Valencia!

hehe, sa ahoang tan-aw man gud, nag developed naman ato-ang pinanggang Valencia! Pero, as in any developing town, especially with a population as large as that seen in Valencia (over 30,000 ) there will be poverty. Na, i hope that this will be something that our current administration will curve.

Mr. Palu, when I was in Valencia this summer, kujawa naman kaajo ato-hang pinanggang Valencia. So many mansions in our town! The merkado has increased and grown from what i remembered. And the new Pablo Lim astrodome, its a new addition to the town that i did not see back when i was in philippines in 1998!

And our Santo Nino Parish Church! The dome inside has been restored.

I love our town, Sir. That is why I do not see the negatives of our hometown. In my heart , there is no town that can compare to Valencia.

After reading Mr. Lorenzo's responses, it appears he is one of the 11.53% of school drop outs. Assuming a HOUSEHOLD of seven people, Mother, Father, and five children, multiplied by 3,048 HOUSEHOLDS comes to 21,336 PEOPLE. . 21,336 is actually 71% of the town's population. If the Provincial average below the poverty line is 42.3% then Valencia is leading the way in poverty.

The restored Dome and interior of the Holy Infant Church, and the stained glass windows were paid for by US, Manila, Davao, Cebu, Saudi, UK, and USA balikbayans. (There are plaques at the entrance to the church) The LGU had nothing to do with this work.

I think the reason you do not see any negatives is because you have not spent any time here.

1. Yes, indeed, so many mansions. Ofws or not, they are still Valencianhons who send money back to Valencia , and in return the town benefits. Don't be so closed minded to think that just because they're 'OFWs' that makes them automatically outside the sphere of Valencia and the Valencianhon people.

Ako, i was born in Valencia, but raised in America. You might consider me 'OFW' but I do not consider myself an OFW, but a pure-blooded Valencianhon.

2. The Pablo Lim Astrodome looks good. I don't know who designed it, but one thing is clear that it was named after the late Mayor Pablo Lim , who was also a very good friend of my late grandmother. Why so antagonistic against projects that are built to develop the infrastructure of the town? From what I was told (by former mayors and from political folks there in Valencia, the dome functions during formal ceremonies and during town festivals and events). Is there a possibility of expanding the astrodome?

3. Have you been to Badiang Springs? Its filled to the brim. I was there and visited few times and everytime it was filled to full capacity. I really don't think it will be taken away nor will the Valencianhon people have to drive to Panglao to swim. LoL.

Badiang Springs/ pool has been there since i can remember. Since as far back as i can remember, the pool has always been there. And considering the high rate of tourists/ visitors to the site, there is steady income. I'm sure the loan will be paid. And considering the Lt. Governor of Bohol is Dr. Concepcion Lim, i really doubt they will be doing anything to forfeit the Badiang Spring/ Pool.

4. Whether or not the new dome of the Church was funded by the OFWs or 'home' Valencianhons, they're still Valencianhons.

Awww diba? We loose the right to take responsibility and to help out our beloved town just because we leave our Pinanggang Yutang na tawhan, diay?? You're telling me that just because USA Balikbayans donate something to the town, that they are separate entity aside from the town?

Mac, there is a community here in USA called the Valencianhon Assocation of the East Coast, which is composed of some 30-40 families and we donate and pool in money to help what we can for our town. Let alone celebrate the Fiesta of our town in the honor of Senyor Santo Nino EVERY year. So even tho we are not in Valencia, we celebrate in SPIRIT with our families and our friends back home in VALENCIA.

i have to understand the side of mr. Lorenzo, its like the story of the blind men who assess the elephant. Becuase Bay Lorenz can only give what he observed then lets respect that. However, as TAGA BUKID, in my almost 30 years of existence, I can personally say that the REAL VALENCIA is hidden beneath the beautiful facade of the town with its newly constructed buildings. The network of roads are still poor, poor performance of students in Provincial, regional and national examinations,mahal ang taxes ug mamaligya sa merkado and etc. These are the problems nga angay unta tagaag atensyon. Dili dakung isyo ng Pablo O. Lim Astrodome, ang isyu daghan ba ug gigamit ba, kapila. Wa na maximise na nga building tungod kay walay klaro ang sports development sa mga kabatan-unan. Kuwang pud ang suporta sa LGU sa scouting ug athletic meets sa mga bata.

Taas kaajo ni ug daghan pa unta kung isubay pero basin gipangkapoy namug basa! salamat!

Bai Jun, salamat sa imohang pagka open mindedness sa other people's point of view on things. Para nako ug sa ubang taw nga wa kahibalo sa situwasyon (ang day to day living sa local residents dinha sa Valencia, especially ang mga residente nga below poverty rate). In my view lang , i did not see destitute people during my many walks around Sawang, Canmanico, etc. You're rigt, Jun, that those who visit Valencia are unaware of the destitute , and I will not deny that there are destitute, just voicing that in my view lang, i did not see destitution, but rather a signs of progress in Valencia.

I sympathize with you and others who are clamoring for the recognition of the current tax rates in the town, as well as the lack of sports development as you said earlier. If this is a case , perhaps you and other concerned citizens can bring this up to the current Mayor during meetings. Perhaps, concerned residents can voice this concern to their elected barangay captains and then have them bring this up to the mayor.

awww, sigoro kadtong mga pediatrics, family practice o geriatric interns kai 12 hour shifts ra man ilaha. intawn, luoy pood ko kai surgical intern man ko, awww..16-24 hour on -call shifts. wa jamo'y 'sleep' shifts sa surgery. ingon to si Dr. Johnson (head of cardiothoracic surgery sa among 'ospital),

"sleep is for general medicine. in surgery, there is no sleep. coffee is your friend and lover."

The other reason people are so sleep deprived is due to sleep disorders. Most people are unaware, as are most physicians. Sleep was not taught during their medical training.

Hmm. Reminds me of the story of how Prince Potemkin, the lover of Russia's Catherine the Great, organized a trip for the empress down one of Russia's rivers for her to view villages which Potemkin had caused to be painted with beautiful facades to camouflage the extreme poverty of the peasants living there.

oh, sorry. i thought you declared in some other thread (was it that thread about the late angelo reyes?) that you are not sleep-deprived...

ah yes, that was before i started my surgery rotations. murag i was still doing internal medicine rotations sa University of Chicago Hospital pa adto.

ps. you get sleep during internal medicine rotations. wala jamo sa surgery. in surgery, its a straight 16-24 hour on-call shift. fyi lang ha.
