An early dawn fire on Good Friday razed some 22 establishments along the road leading to the port in Ubay town.
No casualty was reported but unconfirmed report reaching the Chronicle revealed that a spice vendor was intensely apprehensive upon waking up at the height of the blaze and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Don Emillio del Valle Hospital.
The victim, identified as Yuyen Pardillo, more than 50 yrs old, married, was sleeping inside her store at the public market, 100 meters away, more or less, from the fire scene.
The local fire station received the alarm at about 3:45 a.m. and quenched the fire at about 5 a.m., said SFO1 Alexis Asas. Seven fire stations from the different municipalities and a fire track from the Alturas Group of Companies responded.
The fire allegedly started from a store selling fishing needs owned by Bryan Longos, located just off the lighthouse and fronting PPA passenger terminal building.
One Allan Avergonzado, 35, married and cousin of the store owner recounted that shortly after 3 a.m. he noticed thick smoke emanating from a room where an electrical outlet, accordingly, short circuited. That he was able to seek assistance after breaking open the main door a few minutes later.
Bohol Fire Martial Nunilo Asero initially placed the damage at P3 million.
