Why is it better to have round manhole covers than square ones?

Why is it better to have round manhole covers than square ones? This is logical rather than lateral, but it is a good puzzle that can be solved by lateral thinking techniques. It is supposedly used by a very well-known software company as an interview question for prospective employees.

sayon ihaom ang round nga takob sa round nga manhole, sayon iligid imbis alsahon kay bug-at man.  kun si hubag o bugsay nagduda ani, maayo pa suwayan nilag paligid ang square o triangle.  pakapinan pa gyod ug suway ug takob ug square o triangle nga takob ang round manhole aron sila mabuwasot. ;D
