The 10 Smartest Dog Breeds
« on: October 08, 2013, 05:48:18 AM »
By Cheryl Lock | Pet360.com

Sure your dog's clever … but is he or she one of the smartest dog breeds out there? "While all dogs are smart, certain breeds are more intelligent at specific tasks than others," said Lisa Peterson, spokesperson with the American Kennel Club. Now we know every dog is different, and mixed-breeds are some of the smartest, so we want to mention them up front. If you have a mixed breed (or any breed!) that's great at a certain task, we'd love to hear about it in the comments.

Meanwhile we asked the AKC to help us list 10 dog breeds that excel in intelligence, especially when it comes to the job they do.

Lassie, the famous star in numerous films, multiple television series, a radio program, and the subject of various novels and non-fiction works, was a half-breed Rough Collie, different from a Border Collie.  Like Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin, Lassie is one of the few animal actors to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Country of origin:  Great Britain

Most famous:  Snoopy is billed as "the world's most famous Beagle" even if he's just a comic strip character.

Snoopy as the World War I flying ace

But it wasn't only Charles Schulz who honored the Beagle.  Writers William Shakespeare, John Webster, John Dryden, Thomas Tickell, Henry Fielding and William Cowper, and Alexander Pope (in his translation of Homer's Iliad) referred to the dog in their works.

Following the Apollo I fire, Snoopy became the official mascot of aerospace safety, testing and the rebuilding of the Apollo Program, due to his refusal to accept defeat and his "'outside the doghouse' way of looking at things." A series of Snoopy-in-Space ("Astrobeagle") products arrived with this campaign, and originals are still prized.
