Special Learning, Inc. announced today that they are launching a 10-hour live and interactive webinar series in conjunction with Dr. Ronnie Detrich, PhD. in Addressing Challenging Behaviors Ethically in Schools Series. Dr. Ronnie Detrich has over five decades of experience in working with schools and districts that serve students with disabilities, autism, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD and other mood disorders. Over the years he has facilitated and demonstrated methodologies in which schools and school districts can embrace inclusion to include students who engage in challenging and problematic behaviors. With this 5-part series, Dr. Ronnie and selected elite Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in this area, will share and educate professionals, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, Psychologists, Speech Language Pathologists, Parents and Educators on how-to comply with IDEA regulations, and “No child left behind,” for a subset of students that previously may have been excluded from a free and appropriate education.

STUDENTS WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS DISPLAYED IN THE SCHOOL SETTING

In recent years, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been welcomed in the school sector from adopting Positive Behavior Strategies (PBS), tier systems, addressing social impact for students with problem behaviors on 504 Plans and Individualized Education Plans (IEP). However, there are students who display problematic behaviors that many schools are not equipped to address. Some of these behaviors observed can be students who run away from the school, physical aggression and fighting of other students and educators, destruction of school property, to name a few. When students engage in behaviors of this magnitude, they tend to have increased chances of being suspended, expelled, arrested, or incarcerated. Ultimately, these students lose out on a valuable education and a prosperous and independent future. It is at these points, where the school may call upon an expert in the field of ABA called a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to work with the school and the student’s team to decrease these behaviors and increase their time in school to obtain an appropriate education.

ADDRESSING CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS IN SCHOOLS ETHICALLY WITH EXPERTS IN ABA

When a student is referred to Behavior Analysis services, often, the student has engaged in problem behaviors that have resulted in suspensions, and on in some instances have placed the student at risk of being expelled. Along with this, students who engage in challenging behaviors also disrupt the education of their pupils. This is where the science of Applied Behavior Analysis goes beyond Autism Services and addresses the overall needs of students to maintain an education and prosper as an adult.

When an ABA expert, BCBA, addresses challenging behaviors of a student there are potential barriers to treatment to include, but not limited too: (1) lack of financial resources from the school (2) lack of extra staff to support the student (3) school structure and culture differs from one education system to the next (4) lack of positive motivation from the administration, staff and student’s themselves

With these barriers, progress for a student is minimal. The only way to support a student with challenging behaviors is to have the BCBA, educator, administration, Speech Therapists and the parents come together as a team to implement a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

BRIDGING THE GAP AND INCREASING INCLUSION FOR STUDENTS WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS

Special Learning, Inc has teamed up with Dr. Ronnie Detrich, Ph.D. to tackle head-on the need for Behavior Analysis in schools for students who display challenging behaviors. In the 5-part (10-hour) live webinar series called “Addressing Challenging Behaviors Ethically in Schools”, Dr. Detrich and SMEs will interactively- using proprietary technology- demystify the barriers to treatment in schools and provide professionals, educators and parents with the information, education and empowering tools to successfully assist student’s with challenging behaviors remain in the school setting.
