Besides the fact that 99% of the time someone shows a picture of the “Mayan calendar” and is really passing the Aztec Sun Stone off as Mayan, the 2012 calendar is a complex issue. All the focus is being aimed at the Maya’s Long Count calendar. Yet it is only a part of the most complex time keeping system the world has ever known. There are really a total of 20 different calendars that make up the dating system needed to calculate the Long Count.

The Long Count’s ending date for Baktun 13.0.0.0.0 being December 21, 2012 is being hammered into our consciousness from every direction. It’s as if no other day between now and Winter Solstice 2012 has any bearing on the future of humanity. The way all the prophecies and predications are being presented in regards to this ending date on the Long Count would lead you to comprehend that all of these catastrophes are set to go off in one massive calamity. It wouldn’t be wise to get the idea that nothing will take place between now and 12-21-12.

There are other dates that have been pointed out from the 2012 calendar that might be worth noting. Two versions of Mayan calendric symbol patterns have appeared in crop circles in the few years.  The first crop circle shows the cycles of the Long Count calendar framing the focal point of the fifth and current cycle showing that it is still in motion but ending in 2012. This pattern appeared August 2nd, 2004 at the ancient sacred site of Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, UK.

Then on August 9, 2005 a more concise Maya calendar crop circle went down next to Wayland’s Smithy long barrow, also in Wiltshire, UK. The pattern gives actual dates in 2012, showing a central solar eclipse taking place on May 20, 2012 which is also the Summer Solstice. It just so happens that there will be an annular eclipse on that day; annular meaning the only part of the sun that will remain in view will be a ring of light around the moon. There is in the symbols the announcement of a Venus transit across the face of the sun to occur 16 days later on June 6, 2012. NASA shows both of these events taking place on those dates in their Sky Calendars at NASA.gov.

The Mayas are not the only ancient culture who has a calendar created long ago with this ending date. The Cherokee people also have a 2012 calendar end date that has a final date for this cycle in time of December 18, 2012. This date is not given to us by Western academics but by the Cherokee themselves. The Cherokee have constellations that are unlike any other ancient people. Their calendar ends in the Constellation of the Rattlesnake.

Like the Mayas, the Cherokee also believe that this date marks the end of the age, not the end of the world. What happens at the dawning of the new age greatly depends on humanity’s path over the current age. The Constellation of the Rattlesnake shows the end of the age alignments in the Cherokee calendar for 2004 and 2012. The Cherokee people ask if we are ready to experience the arrival of Time Untime, for that is arriving on December 18, 2012 and is shown to last a 3 day period entered as a flower in their 2012 calendar.

Like the Mayas, the Cherokee’s Rattlesnake Constellation will become feathered when the Time Untime arrives, a bowl of blood in it’s hands and the Pleiades will form the 7 glowing rattles on the tail. Since the dawn of their time, great things have been foretold on their calendar of what will take place within all things on Earth, within the heavens and through the Universe. They know that the events in the Rattlesnake Constellation within the Milky Way at the time of the crossing will tell of the Time Untime of things to be.

Three days of Time Untime in the 2012 calendar kept by the Cherokee. When could time no longer be time? The ancients tracked time by the stars and planets in the sky. If the signs in the heavens, the sun, the moon, the stars and the planets of the entire solar system as viewed from Earth through the eons disappeared, there would definitely be no way to tell time. Could Time Untime arriving in the Cherokee 2012 calendar be the same as what is foretold in the Book of Revelations?

“12  ¶ And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;  13  and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14  And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.   15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains…”  Revelation, Chapter 6. -- http://www.2012officialcountdown.com/

very, very interesting.  if it's the end of an age (not necessarily the end of humanity), then it must spell the end of hip-hop.

Besides the fact that 99% of the time someone shows a picture of the “Mayan calendar” and is really passing the Aztec Sun Stone off as Mayan, the 2012 calendar is a complex issue.

The Aztec people were certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica from the 14th to 16th centuries. "Aztec" is the Nahuatl word for "people from Aztlan", a mythological place for the Nahuatl-speaking culture of the time, and later adopted as the word to define the Mexica people. Often the term "Aztec" refers exclusively to the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan (now the location of Mexico City), situated on an island in Lake Texcoco, who referred to themselves as Mexica Tenochca or Colhua-Mexica.

Aztec location: Central Mexico
Aztec period: 14th to 16th centuries

The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as for its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Pre-Classic period (c. 2000 BC to 250 AD), according to the Mesoamerican chronology, many Maya cities reached their highest state of development during the Classic period (c. 250 to 900 AD), and continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish.

The Maya civilization extended throughout the present-day southern Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán. The Maya area also extended throughout the northern Central American region, including the present-day nations of Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador and western Honduras.

(as posted by hubag at the beginning of this thread)

The Aztec calendar is the calendar system that was used by the Aztecs as well as other Pre-Columbian peoples of central Mexico. It is one of the Mesoamerican calendars, sharing the basic structure of calendars from throughout ancient Mesoamerica.

Maya

The Maya calendar is a system of calendars used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and in many modern communities in highland Guatemala and in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico.

The essentials of the Maya calendar are based upon a system which had been in common use throughout the region, dating back to at least the 5th century BCE. It shares many aspects with calendars employed by other earlier Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Zapotec and Olmec, and contemporary or later ones such as the Mixtec and Aztec calendars. Although the Mesoamerican calendar did not originate with the Maya, their subsequent extensions and refinements of it were the most sophisticated. Along with those of the Aztecs, the Maya calendars are the best-documented and most completely understood.

2012 – The Mayan Calendar, ‘Doomsday’ or ‘New Beginnings’

The Mayan Calendar is something profoundly different than just a system to mark off the passage of time.  The Mayan Calendar is above all a prophetic calendar that may help us understand the past and foresee the future.  It is a calendar of the Ages that describes how the progression of  the Heavens and the Underworlds condition the human consciousness and thus give rise to the framework for our thoughts and actions within a given Age.

The Mayan Calendar is not predicting the end of the world 2012, but the start of a new era. The 2012 doomsday prediction is a present-day cultural meme proposing that cataclysmic and apocalyptic events will occur in the year 2012.  This idea has been disseminated by numerous books, internet sites and by TV documentaries.  The forecast is based primarily on what is claimed to be the end-date of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, which is presented as lasting 5,125 years and as terminating on December 21 or 23, 2012, along with interpretations of assorted legends, scriptures, numerological constructions and prophecies.

A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that, during this time, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation rather than an armageddon, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a newer sociopolitical age for the global community.

Theories

A number of theories have been advanced by various esoteric writers and mystics with regard to how the world will end in 2012.  None have garnered mainstream acceptance by academic scholars of the Maya, who have rejected most on scientific and historical grounds.

New Age

Many believe that the ending of this cycle will correspond with a global “consciousness shift” and the beginning of a new age.  The date became the subject of speculation by Frank Waters, who devotes two chapters to its interpretation, including discussion of an astrological chart for this date and its association with Hopi prophecies in Mexico Mystique: the Coming Sixth Age of Consciousness (1975).

The significance of the year 2012 (but not a specific day) was mentioned briefly by José Argüelles in the Transformative Vision (1975), The Mayan Factor (1987), promoted at the 1987 Harmonic Convergence, and later in Author Daniel Pinchbeck popularized New Age concepts about this date, linking it to beliefs about crop circles, alien abduction, and personal revelations based on the use of entheogens and mediumship in his 2006 book 2012: the Return of Quetzalcoatl.  Pinchbeck argues for a shift in consciousness rather than an apocalpyse, suggesting that materialistic attitudes, rather than the material world, are in jeopardy.

Semir Osmanagić, the archaeologist responsible for promoting the Bosnian pyramids, referred to 2012 in the conclusion of his book The World of the Maya.  He suggests that “Advancement of DNA may raise us to a higher level” and concludes, “When the ‘heavens open’ and cosmic energy is allowed to flow throughout our tiny Planet, we will be raised to a higher level by the vibrations”.

Experts on the ancient Maya such as Schele and Freidel tend to see the focus on 2012 as a manifestation of Mayanism, a collection of New Age beliefs that reinterpret and potentially distort ancient Mayan culture.

University of Florida astronomer Susan Milbrath, author of Star Gods of the Maya, is among those who have accused 2012 doomsday proponents of exploiting Mayan culture to advance political or personal agendas.  Promotion of Mayanism through interest in 2012 doomsday scenarios is contributing to the evolution of religious syncretism in contemporary Maya communities.

Galactic Alignment

Frank Waters’ book inspired further speculation by John Major Jenkins in the mid-1980s, noting the correspondence of the December 21 date with the winter solstice in 2012.  This date was in line with an idea he terms the Galactic Alignment.  This term was “coined” by galactic astrologer Raymond Mardyks who was the first to identify and write about the relationship of this 1998-2001 “galactic alignment” with the claimed ‘Harmonic Convergence’ of 1987 and the supposed Mayan end date of 2012.

In the Solar system, the planets and the Sun share roughly the same plane of orbit, known as the plane of the ecliptic.  From our perspective on Earth, the twelve Zodiacal equinox changes.  In Western astrological traditions, this signals the end of one astrological age (currently the Age of Pisces) and the beginning of another (Age of Aquarius).

Over the course of 26,000 years, the precession of the equinoxes makes one full circuit around the ecliptic.  Constellations move along or near the ecliptic, and over time, appear to recede counterclockwise by one degree every 72 years.  This movement is attributed to a slight wobble in the Earth’s axis as it spins.  As a result, approximately every 2160 years, the constellation visible on the early morning of the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere is currently in the constellation of Pisces, so the winter solstice is currently in the constellation of Sagittarius, which happens to be the constellation intersected by the galactic equator.

Every year for the last 2000 years or so, on the winter solstice, the Earth, Sun and the galactic equator come into alignment, and every year, precession pushes the Sun’s position a little way further through the Milky Way’s band.

Jenkins suggests that the Maya based their calendar on observations of the “dark rift”, a band of black dust clouds in the Milky Way, which the Maya called the Xibalba or Black Road.  Jenkins claims that the Maya were aware of where the ecliptic intersected the Black Road and gave this position in the sky a special significance in their cosmology.  According to the theory, the Sun precisely aligns with this intersection point at the winter solstice of 2012.

Jenkins is credited with the premise that the classical Mayans anticipated this conjunction and celebrated it as the harbinger of a profound spiritual transition for mankind.

New Age proponents of the galactic alignment theory argue that, just as astrology uses the positions of stars and planets to predict the future, the Mayans plotted their calendars with the objective of preparing for significant world events.

Critics suggest that the alignment in question takes place over a 36-year period, corresponding to the diameter of the Sun, with the most precise convergence having already occurred without incident in 1998.  Also, Jenkins himself notes that there is no concrete evidence that the Maya were aware of precession.

Timewave Zero

Timewave Zero, which is part of Novelty theory, is a mathematical formula that purports to calculate the ebb and flow of “novelty”, defined as the increase in the universe’s interconnectedness, or organized complexity, over time.  According to Terence McKenna, who conceived the idea in the early 1970s, the universe has a teleological attractor at the end of time that increases interconnectedness, eventually reaching a singularity of infinite complexity on December 21, 2012, at which point anything and everything imaginable will occur instantaneously.

As the theory was never published in a peer-reviewed journal and McKenna’s sources and reasoning were primarily what would be considered numerological rather than mathematical by professional mathematicians and scientists, the theory has failed to gain any scientific credibility or much recognition.

McKenna expressed novelty in a computer program, which purportedly produces a fractal waveform known as timewave zero or the timewave.  Based on McKenna’s interpretation of the King Wen sequence of the I Ching, the graph appears to show great periods of novelty corresponding with major shifts in humanity’s biological and cultural evolution.  He believed the events of any given time are recursively related to the events of other times, and chose his end date by looking for a very novel event in recent history: the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.  This gave an end-date in mid-November of 2012, but when he discovered its proximity to the end of the 13th baktun, he adjusted the end date to match this point in the calendar.

End of the World

Various ideas have been advanced concerning a possible end of the world in 2012.  One idea involves a geomagnetic reversal (often incorrectly referred to as a polar shift by proponents of this theory), which could be triggered by a massive solar flare, one with energy equal to 100 million atomic bombs.  This is supported by evidence that the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening, which indicates an impending reversal of the north and south magnetic poles.

Scientists believe the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, and has been for a long time, even since the time of the Mayans, because the last reversal was 780,000 years ago. Critics, however, claim geomagnetic reversals take up to 5,000 years to complete, and do not start on any particular date.  Also, while NASA expects a particularly strong solar maximum sometime around 2012, there is no scientific evidence linking a solar maximum to a geomagnetic reversal.  A solar maximum would be mostly notable for its effects on satellite and cellular phone communications.

Another apocalyptic idea circulating about 2012, which has existed in various forms since 1995 and has changed dates at least twice since then, is that a large planet, called Nibiru, will collide with or pass by Earth in that year.  This idea has been ridiculed by astronomers, who point out that such an object so close to Earth would be visible to anyone looking up at the night sky.
