What to Carry With You
* Obey carry-on restrictions - Before packing, consult the current rules for carry-on items from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Prepare to take off your shoes (slip on shoes work best), as well as your coat and jacket, at security checkpoints. Empty pockets of loose change, and take off belts and jewelry. Speed up security lines by packing carry-on bags so they are easily accessible to hand searches.
* Carry these items with you:
1. Cell phone. Don't have one: buy a 'pay-as-you-go' cell phone.
2. Prescription medication - don't pack these inside your checked bag. Lord only knows when you'll see that bag again. Take these important items in your carry-on bag in the original prescription container. If you're packing liquid prescriptions, check with your airline for the latest security information regarding bringing liquids on board in carry-on luggage.
3. Snacks - put snacks such as canned or jarred food, sauces, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, Jell-O, or peanut butter in carry-on bags in 3 oz. containers.
4. Reading Material - magazines, books, newspaper
5. Handheld games - Nintendo DS, Sony PSP - these are fine in the airport, but once in the plane, you'd better have a nice crossword puzzle.
