Tour Guides in Bohol
« on: April 09, 2010, 03:09:08 PM »
Stricter measure to weed out errant “tour guides” is the Provincial Tourism Council’s (PTC) latest answer to the call to streamline the tourism sector in line with the soon to be implemented new tourism act.

The council pushed for a “moratorium” of sorts on Department of Tourism (DOT) accredited guides to run tours even if he still has to reactivate an expired accreditation or local license.

During a special meeting held at the Bohol Tourism Office Tuesday, PTC co-chairman Atty Lucas Nunag agreed that the current situation in Bohol calls for a just leeway for tour guides with expired accreditations or unprocessed licenses to work on them in a span of time determined by the council.

By this, the council would be issuing temporary identification cards to tour guides in these status to allow them free access to destinations and get the perks of the job, explains Nonette Bolo, president of the Bohol Federrations of Tours and Travel Operators (BOFETTO).

A DOT or PTC identification card allows the bearer tour guide free meals and entrance fees when accessing destinations, the representatives during the meeting said.

Without the cards to identify the guide, he would have to pay for his entrances, meals and would be presented as an escort and not a guide, Bolo, who also operates Dagohoy Travel said.

I guess the move is fair enough, Atty Nunag who runs hip Amarela Resort in Panglao island said on the other hand.

“It is high time for the council to implement meaures to assure that tourists are not short-changed,” said Nerissa Caong, a member of the Kahugpungan sa mga Bol-anong Tour Guides (KABOG) said.

Tour guides from both Bohol Island Tour Guides Association of the Philippines (BITGAP) and KABOG validated the complaints filed to the council about persons running tours as illegal guides.

Many stakeholders also  see the move as pro-active since Bohol has become a by-word in tourism and assuring that tour guides running tours are professionally trained and passed the minimum requirement by the DOT is a win-win situation, Chito Vaño of KABOG who was a DOT Kalakbay nominee added.

Still beset with the perennial problem of lack of competent tour guides especially during peak months, the moratorium is hoped to finally settle the controversy as to who would be deemed legal tour guides in Bohol. (PIA-Bohol)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
