News published in the Bohol Chronicle - July 8, 2007The attraction of the province as a prime tourist destination continues to generate attention as the first international cruise ship port in the country is proposed to be constructed in the coastal barangay of Catagbacan, Loon, some 30 kms from Tagbilaran City.
A proposed concept/design was recently completed by the Philippine Ports Authiority (PPA), which was started during the term of the late PPA-Bohol Port Manager Raul Oblenda. The finalized proposed design was recently presented to Rep. Edgar Chatto, House tourism committee chairman who is bullish about the project.
The plan to construct an international cruise ship port came after the Boholano solon received the request from cruise operators group to establish such port in the country to accommodate international cruise ships which ferry thousands of tourists from other countries.
Chatto said PPA, during its initial survey, found the Catagbacan Port to be an ideal area because of the depth of its seas including the channel approaching the existing dilapidated port.
The cost of the proposed port is still to be determined since its concept and design is subject for evaluation and approval by top PPA management in Manila. However, Chatto was quoted as saying that PPA General Manager Sevilla has signified his endorsement of the project once the concept and design will be presented to top PPA offices.
The proposed design includes the construction of a new port where a modern terminal and docking area for fast sea crafts and yachts will complement the well designed berthing space for one international cruise ship at a time.
The PPA's final approval of the proposed port will require the approval and endorsements of the local government units. The solon requested PPA to present the proposed port design to the Loon municipal government and the provincial government to generate endorsements from the local officials.
Rep. Chatto said he endorsed the project to top PPA management while he encouraged the municipal and provincial governments to issue their separate endorsements as well.
