TAGBILARAN CITY -- The tourism industry in bohol is on the upswing even when tourism was on a downturn in other places, according to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

During the 155th Bohol Day celebration at the Bohol Cultural Center in Tagbilaran City, the President said tourism arrivals have gone down even in leading tourist destinations in other countries due to the world economic crisis.

“But here in Bohol, tourism has gone up [by] 15 percent. Congratulations,” she told her audience composed mostly of government workers in the 2,000-capacity venue.

From 1.8 million visitors in 2004, the President said this rose to 3.14 million in 2008, which made tourism a $5-billion industry.

In her speech, President Arroyo talked about her mega projects in Bohol, including the Bohol irrigation project, the Bohol circumferential road improvement project, roll on-roll off ports and the airport project in Panglao that had already started.

The President arrived at the Tagbilaran airport 5:40 p.m. Tuesday and proceeded to the Amorita Resort in Barangay Tawala, Panglao where she met briefly with provincial officials.

Amorita is the fifth resort in Panglao island that hosted an overnight stay for the President. Ms Arroyo has stayed at the Alona Palm Beach Resort and Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa, both in Panglao; Panglao Island Nature Resort and Spa in Bingag, Dauis; and Bohol Beach Club, which was the venue for her 2006 state dinner visit with New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, the first state dinner outside Malacañang.

A marker was unveiled at the inauguration of the P20-million Bohol Medical Center Institute (BCMI) building in Barangay Dao.

The BMCI is a joint project of the provincial government, First Consolidated Bank Foundation, Bohol Chronicle-DYRD-Inyong Alagad Foundation and the New York-based Home Reach Foundation to give indigent and middle class families socialized medical and diagnostic services.
