Philippines sees boost from North America
02 May 2008

The Philippines has seen a substantial boost in the number of visitors it has welcomed from North American countries this year, according to new figures.

After a record year for tourism in 2007, the tropical island nation saw an 18.7% year-on-year increase in its number of visitors from Canada in the first two months of 2008.

Some 7.1% more tourists from the US visited the Philippines in January and February this year than in 2007, according to official figures.

The success is thought to be partly a result of marketing campaigns focusing on adventure, dive and wellness travel, as well as promotional work by the Philippines' North American offices.

Los Angeles-based tourism director Annie Cuevas told the Travel Industry Wire: 'This upward trend shows no signs of slowing.'

The Philippines comprises more than 7,000 islands and boasts attractions including the Tubbataha Reef marine park, the White Beach of Boracay and the Chocolate Hills of Bohol.

Last year, a record-breaking 3m people visited the archipelago.
