Bohol is famous for?
« on: August 22, 2007, 01:16:57 PM »
data from tourism.gov.ph Is this accurate? Something is missing/lacking...

Chocolate Hills
Located in the town of Carmen, 55 kilometers from Tagbilaran City, the Chocolate Hills are undoubtedly the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol. Among the 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, which abound in Central Bohol, two have been developed into a resort. On top of these hills is a complex that offers accommodation, conference rooms, restaurants, and a view deck.

Dauis Church
Located in the town of Dauis, three kilometers from Tagbilaran City, Dauis Church is one of Bohol’s beautiful churches that has retained its Spanish architecture despite a semi-modern façade. The interior has life-like murals painted on the ceiling.
The patron saint, the Virgin of the Assumption, is believed to possess miraculous powers. It is the object of the faithful, who attend its annual festivities. Legend has it that when the town was invaded by pirates, the townfolk locked themselves inside the church until they ran out of water and provisions. Then suddenly a well appeared at the foot of the altar where people started drawing water. It is still the main source of water for the people living in the church vicinity. Surprisingly, the water is absolutely fresh even as the well is located only a few meters from the sea.

Baclayon Church
One of the oldest stone churches in the Philippines is Baclayon Church, located in the town of Baclayon, six kilometers from Tagbilaran City. This ancient massive edifice still retains its century-old architectural design. Both in the external and internal portions of the church are various interesting relics and artifacts dating back to the early 16th century, which have now been placed at the Baclayon Museum.
Baclayon is the oldest town in Bohol and the mother town of Alburquerque, Balilihan, and Sikatuna.

Blood Compact / Sandugo
Datu Sikatuna, a native Boholano chieftain, forged a Blood Compact with Don Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, representing the King of Spain, for the purpose of fostering friendly relations between the two countries. The Blood Compact that took place on March 16, 1565 is considered as the first “Treaty of Friendship” between the brown and white races. A marker of this historic event can be found in Barangay Bool at Tagbilaran City.

Dagohoy Revolt
Francisco Dagohoy led the longest revolt in the country against the Spaniards, which lasted for 84 years. There now stands a marker in Magtangtang at the town of Danao, installed by the Philippine Historical Commission to honor the heroic deeds of Dagohoy. Magtangtang was his headquarters or hideout during the revolt. Hundreds of Dagohoy’s followers preferred death inside the cave than surrender. Their skeletons still remain in the site located in Danao, 92 kilometers from Tagbilaran City.

Sandugo Festival
The festival celebrated from July 1 to 31 has been inspired by the blood compact, or Sandugo, a friendship treaty between the Philippines and Spain that took place in 1565. The annual spectacle of the province features an agro-industrial fair, cultural and historical showcase, sports events, a beauty pageant, balls and dances, entertainment shows, and streetdancing which culminates with the re-enactment of the blood compact between Datu Sikatuna and Don Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

Bolibong Kingking Festival
Celebrated from May 23 to 24, it is a music and dance festivity depicting the history, folklore, and traditions of the Lobocanons. Bolibong Kingking is a term applied to the drums and gongs, and their rhythm, used to accompany the supplication dance ritual performed before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the second patron of Loboc.

Bohol is known for a number of men who entered the vocation of priesthood. When I was in Rome, it was learned that the Head or Coordinator among priests in the Vatican was a Boholano.  Daghang gyong pari nga Bol-anon.

^ Glad to know that Jun.

Bohol is definately known for our glorious and beautiful Chocolate Hills. When most Americans are asked about the Philippines--and what comes to mind--they usually call out 'those chocolate hills' or 'Leyte Gulf War'.

Chocolate Hills is definately top 10 tourist attraction for the Phils.

they missed Pamilacan Island Dolphin and Whale Watching... that´s part of Bohol´s tourism.

Bohol is also famous for its white sandy beaches.. i.e. in Panglao and Anda.
and there is another thing about Bohol... but i think it´s just less known... Bohol is home to the largest mangrove plantation in Asia... it´s in Getafe... but i gotta check this for verification... hehehe!

and Bohol also has Danajon Barrier Reef. it´s like the Great Barrier Reef man and that´s a rare natural formation!

Bohol has more than the eye could see... and i should say that it´s time for us Boholanos to travel the less travelled roads of Bohol... explore Bohol like it never has been explored before! you won´t be lost.... after all you belong to the place and vice versa...

Bohol was featured on China's CCTV9
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBtKQoQEgOc&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eskyscrapercity%2Ecom%2Fshowthread%2Ephp%3Ft%3D182067%26page%3D22

I was viewing this English-language program aired in China with gusto when the Philippine Tourism Office in Tokyo called me up today to tell me that a Japanese TV production company is editing a newly completed documentary on Bohol's Tarsier.

The TV company is requesting me to transcribe and translate footages of a Japanese actress' one-week homestay with the family of the caretaker of the tarsier sanctuary. Does anyone know him? It must be a full-length feature because they are requesting me to work for 4 to 5 days.

In Japan, the tarsier and the Chocolate Hills first come to mind when you mention Bohol. But of course, the public level of awareness is still very low.

I am just so proud that Bohol has so many natural wonders to boast of. Even a country as vast and with amazing landscapes as China is still awe-struck by our small paradise. Japan is also interesting, but not nearly as beautiful as Bohol.

Gervistil,

Are these photos taken by you? Amazing! Professional kaayo! I would like to show them to my Japanese friends... Maybe we should compile photos of Bohol and publish a coffee-table book. Ako lang unya bahala sa text ug Japanese translation. Bohol will surely shine even more.

I saw a magazine in DSB travel in DK, featuring philippines, and one of the four islands in the philippines that is featured is Bohol..

The four places are:
1) Palawan
2) Boracay
3) Mindoro
4) Bohol
     = Alona Beach
     = Chocolate Hills
     = Bohol Beach Club

I am halfway through the tarsier documentary translation and I just learned that the program will be aired on a primetime TV show.

This docu paints a very heart-warming picture of the tarsier as well as the people entrusted with protecting it. Bohol looks very green here. You'll be proud of the ordinary, simple Boholanos featured here--so far.

I am sure this tarsier program will launch Bohol into another level of popularity among the Japanese. The Bohol government should launch the tarsier as our official mascot. The Japanese love mascots very much and simply snap up cute animal dolls as souvenir items (panda, koala, etc). Would you believe that an announcement of a single newly born koala or panda in a Japanese zoo could bring millions of visitors to that place? And our tarsier is cuter by far!

Any entrepreneur who's interested to take up the venture of creating tarsier dolls (using environment-friendly material)? You have enough time before the program is aired and the Japanese tourists start flocking to Bohol. I really hope this program bring good tidings to Bohol.

What are we to do with heritage white elephants?

BOHOLANO home cooking is served under the painted dome of the Dauis convento.

MANILA, Philippines -- Despite the growing campaign to save Philippine heritage, the honest truth is that a lot (or most) of the heritage structures we campaign to save are really white elephants.

What are we to do with those white elephants?

On the verge of becoming white elephants are our World Heritage-inscribed Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordillera.

A site of incontestable beauty, the rice terraces are one of the few places on our planet where natural and cultural heritage combine to produce a landscape of such impact. Seeing the struggle for the place to keep up with the 21st century leads to the question, Is heritage enough?

Heritage might be enough for inanimate objects, stuff for display like empty architectural monuments or valuable objects locked up under glass in museums that are lifeless markers of the past.

A place like the rice terraces, unquestionably a marker of Philippine heritage, is far from being an inert monument to the past, enshrined in museum-like stillness.

For centuries the terraces’ traditional practices—cultural, religious, environmental, agricultural, hydrological and artistic—revolved around the rice- growing cycle, supporting the life of their inhabitants. Massive migration out of the terraces is proof that the traditional lifestyle has become extremely difficult to maintain today, leading to an endless search for solutions that will update the tough Cordillera lifestyle while maintaining cultural roots.

Unlike similar rice-growing mountain terraces in China that have long been abandoned, the terraces of the Philippine Cordillera aren’t relics. The terraces, however, search for ways to maintain their connection to human life.

Relics of the past deserve to continue living. Once it was thought that the best thing to do with an old Spanish colonial-era house was to turn it into a museum, so many houses stopped being homes and turned into excellent museums, each displaying exquisite collections of furniture and furnishings.

The museums as total nostalgia re-live past eras through collections of objects from a bygone era that make no connection to daily life today.

Bed-and-breakfast

There are heritage homes that now have recently learned to make use of their past as a resource to connect to their present. Owners develop their heritage homes as a resource not only to generate additional income to improve their way of living but also to provide financial means to continue conserving their heritage properties.

Through the bed-and-breakfast program, heritage houses continue to be used and be useful rather than stagnate into lifeless museum displays or fall into disrepair and decay.

Owners of a group of heritage homes in the historic town of Baclayon in Bohol have formed a bed-and-breakfast association, initially offering a total of over 20 rooms in neighboring houses. Converting unused bedrooms as guest lodgings uses heritage positively as an income-generating resource, as a source of pride and local identity, and, most important, keeps the heritage alive and up-to-date.

And as a tourism experience, the hospitality offered by the homeowners participating in the Baclayon bed-and-breakfast program brings travelers into personal contact with the gentle Boholano culture.

Heritage houses glow differently when occupied. Their glow becomes warmer when they continue usefulness, as lodging houses, schools, offices, or for whatever purpose. They also glow better because they are earning their keep.

Definitely with a glow that warms the heart is the Dauis convento in Bohol where, under a magnificently painted wooden cupola in the convento, a dinner of down-home Boholano cuisine is served by local youth trained as cooks and waiters.
They serve the regional Bisayá food of my youth on impeccable china and linen in unsurpassable convento surroundings, a great experience that combines tangible heritage (the splendid architecture of the convento) and intangible heritage (regional food, performances of traditional music).

Intangibles

The intangibles give life to heritage, connects heritage to people. Instead of the sites being lifeless and empty, think of the texture daily life adds to the rice terraces, the heritage houses of Baclayon, and the white elephant that would have been the Dauis convento.

In the three sites, heritage generates income through tourism, one of the more obvious uses for heritage-based resources.

The intangible, or the software, makes the heritage memorable. It is the stuff that makes for great tourism experiences.

It is the intangible that radiates life to a place, connects tourists to locals and their traditions.

The intangible is the “spirit of place” that makes the visitor part of the local life, even if just for a few hours or days.

Think of the rice terraces without inhabitants, the houses in Baclayon empty, the convento in Dauis continuing to decay.

Then see the benefits from judicious use of their heritage as resources for income-generation.

Heritage really should not produce more white elephants than we can handle. It should benefit people.

Baclayon bed-and-breakfast will be ready to receive visitors in the near future. Bookings are required at Dauis convento, call 0921-6643277 or (038) 502-2008.

Hi Gervistil,

Thanks so very much for the previous pictures posted.....it reminds me to visit again those places. I've been in Maribojoc tower in the year of 1974 when we had the first  Family trip to Chocolate hills after my engagement ceremony.  Is there any changes or improvements on that area?  Muss come and visit that place again.  Had visited this big anaconda in the year 2002 where they feed with goat and/or dogs?  What I also found interesting is the newly opened restaurant in Dauis convent, for sure it is worthy for a visit.

Bohol is known for a number of men who entered the vocation of priesthood. When I was in Rome, it was learned that the Head or Coordinator among priests in the Vatican was a Boholano.  Daghang gyong pari nga Bol-anon.

Father Tony Pernia, the first ever Filipino and a Boholano to become superior general of the SVD at the heart of Rome!
