The chipmaker made a big splash Tuesday with its announcement that it would build its own consumer electronics device and provide a TV service for it later this year. Speaking at the D: Dive Into Media conference, Erik Huggers, corporate vice president at Intel Media, said the company is developing an Internet television platform and has staffed the new division with people from Apple, Google (GOOG) and Netflix (NFLX).
"For the first time, we will deliver a new consumer electronics product under a new brand," Huggers said. "We'll offer consumers a box, and they'll buy this directly from us. It'll be an Intel-powered device with fantastic industrial design. But it's not just a device. We're working with the entire industry to figure out how we get live TV to consumers over the Internet."
The box and service will provide live TV, on-demand video, "catch-up TV," and apps as well, he said.
Intel should call its new set-top box the WTF, because that was my response when I heard about it.
