SMART COMMUNICATIONS, Inc. will roll out next week higher speed Internet connection for mobile devices in select areas, albeit with a data volume limit and two-year subscription lock-in.
The
fourth generation (4G) broadband service running on Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology will be made available starting Aug. 25 in Makati City, Ortigas business district, Katipunan Ave. and Cubao area in Quezon City, and Pasig City along with in business locations in Cebu, Davao and Baguio, Rolando G. Peña, the company’s head of technology said in a briefing.
This, after the telco reportedly completed the deployment of LTE infrastructure in 9,500 base stations in May as part of its P67-billion network modernization.
Consumers who want to tap the 4G-LTE service, which is promised to deliver a maximum speed of 42mbps will have to subscribe to a 24-month plan priced at P3,500 per month, Mr. Peña said. Subscribers will be able to download 10 gigabytes per month, he added.
In the same briefing, Ramon S. Isberto, spokesperson of Smart Communication parent Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), said that the service will be available “in other key cities in the country†in the latter part of the year.
Smart Communications offering comes ahead of its rival Globe Telecom, Inc. which likewise plans to launch a similar 4G-LTE offering.
Globe Telecom, which began its $790 million network upgrade in the first quarter of the year, has so far finished 30% of the program as of June, claiming broadband connection improvements in Davao, Cebu, and parts of Southern Luzon.
